THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Addint Memory to Bryce?

Bigballa111cmb ( ) posted Fri, 03 May 2002 at 8:20 AM · edited Sun, 02 February 2025 at 2:03 PM

See I get a message everytime saying not enough memory (error) when tyring to import this obj file. And i was wondering how I could add more memory to the bryce app. I use windows.

Aldaron ( ) posted Fri, 03 May 2002 at 9:18 AM

Try importing the .obj file into UVmapper then saving the .obj I've heard this fixes most importing problems with .obj files

Alleycat169 ( ) posted Fri, 03 May 2002 at 9:20 AM

Buy more RAM. Only Mac OS allows you to "allocate memory" to applications. Windows just uses anything that is available in the system. How much RAM do you have?

Bigballa111cmb ( ) posted Fri, 03 May 2002 at 9:50 AM

I have alot of ram. I have like 20 gb left on my pc.

Bigballa111cmb ( ) posted Fri, 03 May 2002 at 9:51 AM

I tried saving the obj file I exported from poser. But it didn't work. Should I save it as a different name.

Aldaron ( ) posted Fri, 03 May 2002 at 10:49 AM

What settings are you using to export it from Poser? I'm not very good at this (since I haven't encountered this problem yet) but someone else may be able to help if they knew how you were exporting it from poser. Also you could try exporting as another format besides .obj

Incarnadine ( ) posted Fri, 03 May 2002 at 12:25 PM

I hate to harp on the RAM question but you have 20Gb (most compiuters can't handle more than 1.5 Gb and the typical is 256 Mb to 512 Mb). Were you commenting on remaining hard disk space (not the same thing!)

Pass no temptation lightly by, for one never knows when it may pass again!

Stephen Ray ( ) posted Fri, 03 May 2002 at 12:31 PM

wow 20.... GB of Ram, I want one of those motherboards.... yup... has to be hard disk space....

Bigballa111cmb ( ) posted Fri, 03 May 2002 at 12:52 PM

yea remaining hard disk space!

Bigballa111cmb ( ) posted Fri, 03 May 2002 at 12:53 PM

Can you export as another format?

Erlik ( ) posted Fri, 03 May 2002 at 1:59 PM

Where, in Poser? Yup. Try 3DS or DXF. 3DS (3D Studio) exports much more details than a generic DXF. BTW, have you fiddled with your virtual memory settings? One of the theories is that you should set VM (System and then probably at the bottom of General tab. Or possibly Performance tab. I have win2000 where it's different.) to 1.5 times the amount of RAM. So, if you have 256 MB of RAM, try setting VM to 384 MB. If you've already done something like that, try checking "Let Windows manage memory (Recommended)". There are even some cases where, if you have lotsa RAM, like gigabyte or more, people recommend you to turn off Virtual Memory completely.

How much ram do you have to begin with? The only format you can save to, out of UVMapper, is .obj.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Fri, 03 May 2002 at 3:31 PM

You should be able to; 1.)Export .obj from Poser. 2.)Open .obj in "UVMapper Classic" (File>Load Model) 3.)Click "OK" on the Statistics Screen. 4.)Re-save model (File>Save Model). 5.)Ignore all options it gives you for saving & Click "OK". 6.)Save as new named model OR over over-write it, doesn't matter. That's it.

My Pc came with 128 mb

Bigballa111cmb ( ) posted Fri, 03 May 2002 at 5:42 PM

The obj file size is about 31.4 mb! I tried that and it still didn't work.

Stephen Ray ( ) posted Fri, 03 May 2002 at 6:16 PM

31 mb is pretty big, if I'm not mistaken when Bryce imports it has to import the 31 mb file, then conversion the file to it's format. With all information being stored in the ram ( Bryce won't swap the covertion info to disk ). So your running out of ram before the conversion is complete. I used to have this problem sometimes too. Are you using a home edition of Win? Windows home addition ( anything that isn't NT based ) are rather poor at managing ram. Have you tried rebooting ( to clear the ram ) then open only Bryce ( no background apps running ) and try importing it into a new clean Project. If you can get it into Bryce, save it on the create palette, then open your project and add it from the create palette. Once it's in Bryce, Bryce will swap info to disk while working within Bryce. It's just importing that won't swap to disk. If that doesn't work you can try saving as another file type that might not be as big as obj. or see how much ram your motherboard can support and add more if you can.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Fri, 03 May 2002 at 7:32 PM

At that size, try exporting it out of Poser as a .3ds, or .dxf as mentioned above, I know they will be smaller in file size than an .obj, maybe that will help getting it into Bryce. (famous last words) AgentSmith

It's probably not so much the moptherboard as the new RAM sticks on the market. I've noticed 1, 2, 4...GB sticks over at pricewatch... I beleive when they advertised my 3 slot dual 370 board as capacitating up to 1.5 GBs of RAM they were refering to 3 of the the largest(512MB) boards(At that time. I also askeds a question here once..about adding new sdram dimms to my old old mother board, and sombody called my a monkey, then asled if a round peg would fit into a square hole... = )

Bigballa111cmb ( ) posted Fri, 03 May 2002 at 9:17 PM

Well I tried everything yall told me. When I tried the 3ds format I got a bad media error. Its probably just something in the woodland defender obj file.

Aldaron ( ) posted Fri, 03 May 2002 at 11:28 PM

This is a long and painful way to do it but you could export portions out of Poser then reasemble them back into bryce. To keep them all together you create a box prop in Poser that covers the whole figure. Then select the box and part of the figure to export. Do this for each section. When it's all brought into Bryce each piece should be in it's relative position to the others parts, all you have to do is delete the boxes once it's in Bryce.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Sat, 04 May 2002 at 1:57 AM

Here's another shot. Try re-saving your Poser export (yes, again) through the freeware file translation program "Crossroads". Try all the different file extensions. Just a thought, maybe it could "fix" whatever the problem is. And yeah, it sounds like their is a small glitch with the original .obj, amounting to incompatibility down the line. AgentSmith

I have got 256 MB of RAM and I get the same error with a 38.4 MB file, but that was only to trie out what your problem might be. I think it is the following: I checked my RAM and it was down to 0 bytes free. So the problem is probably beeing out of RAM. And you have 128 MB (if i am right) so I think buying extra RAM or breaking up your mesh in several parts and exporting these to smaller files might be a solution. If you import them one by one and reassamble the object in Bryce you might be able to import the model.

cainbrogan, I've been told ( by techs ) that any particular motherboard can only support a certain amount of ram. When they advertise your system can have 1.5 GB ram, then more then likely that's it's limit. No matter what size modules ( sticks ) or sockets are available. Here's what my motherboard spec, say PC100/PC133 Memory Support: Equipped with 3 dual inline memory module ( DIMM ) sockets to support PC100/PC133 compliant SDRAMs ( available in 64, 128, 256, 512 MB densities ) up to 512 MB When I had this computer made 1 1/2 years ago. it was the best I could afford.

My motherboard supports up to 3 or 4 GB of RAM at 266 MHz. It's a Gigabyte 7DXR. It's not a very expensive board but it does support AMD AthlonXP processors. The maximum RAM support of a motherboard is set by the BIOS I think. The same thing goes for Processor support. For instance my father had an old 133MHz Pentium and we could only upgrade it to 233MHz pentium max. although there were 700MHz processors wich could run on mainboards with 100 MHz bus-speed but they didn't work at the old motherboard.

Bigballa111cmb - What speed is your processor. I think I had this same problem, afew months ago. I was using a 233Mhz PI, with about 32MB of RAM. You would have hoped the application could have supported the file size, allbeit in time..., but it was'nt untill I built my 256MB Celeron 700Mhz, that I could use about a 30MB file. BTW - How did you manage 20GB into your system? = )

Flak ( ) posted Sun, 05 May 2002 at 1:12 AM

My advice - get more RAM - at least another 256MB. Check you motherboard manual first though - that'll tell you how much RAM that your motherboard can take (total), and how big a RAM stick it can take in any one of its slots. Also, make sure you get a RAM type that is compatioble with your motherboard and the other RAM you've already got in your PC.

Oh yeah, in addition - if you use win98se as your operating system, then don't have more than 512MB total RAM in your PC - you might run into some troubles if you do.

Hey you all 20 GB memory can't be RAM on a regular PC, you need an SGI onyx(or something like that) for such amounts of RAM. I think Bigballa111cmb already said it was free harddiskspace. That makes a difference. By the way: Does anyone kow why I suddenly loose hundreds of megabytes of Diskspace at C: when merging large scenefiles in bryce? I get messages like: "Windows has detected less than 0 MB free space on c:! This is very little. please delete some programs you don't use to free up some space." And bryce says: "Error importing file. Out of memory!" But when I wait an hour or so there's 24.7 MB free space (always exactly the same, always 24,7 MB, I don't know why) And the scene is succesfully merged. Why is this? I normally have +/- 1 GB free space at C: and my swapfile is located at E: with 3600 MB free space, and there's 1700 free swap-space left on E: when the error takes place. Also there's no more than 8 KB in the Temp directory. The disk space on C: just seems to disappear into another dimension or something :). If anyone knows a solution to this problem please tell me. It might also be Bigballa111cmb's problem.

Do your scenes contain lots of polygons? That might explain the long time. Then, what OS? Try setting the Virtual Memory to 1.5 times RAM, ie 384 meg, as I said earlier. Or completely turning off VM. Also, try running ScanDisk with surface checking enabled for all disks. There might be a bad sector or something.

RayRaz - Bryce somtimes makes a temp file named ???spool???.tmp or something like that in the c:windowstemp area when you are doing some things (its not the swap file). The biggest mine ever has got was about 200MB big at any time. Normally its only a few kb, but sometimes it gets really big when I'm doing "big" things.

This summer I plan on updating my pc. I run windows ME right now. I am also going to add more RAM!

Rayraz ( ) posted Thu, 09 May 2002 at 4:13 AM

Flak, Yes that's the file, but it shows itself as being 6.65 KB but when I shut down Bryce with Ctrl/Alt/Delete It suddenly shows as 1.03 GB. And then my c: disk is full. But I set my temp-dir to e: in autoexec.bat, so now there's 3.6 GB free. This has worked. And I am now able to import the whole scene, but there's still one problem: Because my scene has 13735 objects and 656475343 poly's (or something like that) it takes 5 hours to just merge all the files together and redrawing the wireframe takes just 2 minutes, but that is with the wireframe details set to 8 and all the latices set to 'show as box'. With all objects shown at wireframedetail 128 it takes 7 hours. And the estimated rendertime seemed to be 290 days. (7 hours to finish half the first pass) And this with no volumetrics at all and normal AA at 800x600 pixels. The swapfile then is 500 MB and the tempfile is 1.5 GB. So does anyone have a 400-computer renderfarm to render it?
