Subject: Turbulent water

What would be the best way to make water look turbulent? I am doing this for a water fall(I posted a couple of times previously, under title of render tests) I want the water near the edge of the water fall to be more turbulent than the water farther away. Should I use lattices, or is there an easier way? Thanks

A terrain would probably be the easiest way.

sigh...i'm horrible with shaping terrains....unless you know of a tut online somewhere, that can explain how to get the effect I want...???

Do you want just ripples coming from the waterfall or actually something closer to like a spray? For the spray I'd experiment with cloud textures using spheres. For ripples if you have photopaint or something similar you can create a greyscale using the ripple texture that is in photopaint or create concentric circles and add gausian blur(about 2 pixels).

Peter Sharpe has tutorials on making waterfalls with terrains, splashes, and mist/water vapour. His tuts are always good to follow and downloadable in pdf form too (yeah pete! :-). Plus they're linked from the Bryce tuts section of r'osity. Hope this helps - good luck.

You can do it post production by using Photoshop filters. I like to put in sphere's with cloud texture.

As I have no decent photo editing software, post-work is out of the question. I will prolly just use peter sharpe's tuts. In addition to ripples and spray coming from the waterfall, I would also like to have some turbulence at the top of the waterfall(realistic looking, if possible).

Hm. What do you think about a little lattice with adapted bubbly glass texture? Might work that way.

I've got a coupla tuts at my site for doing water. There's one for large-scale waves and one for circular ripples. You may be able to combine them to get the effect you want. The ripple one requires a paint program. Paint Shop Pro has gotten to be pretty powerful and very reasonably priced. But I'm not sure if it has the ripple pattern needed for the tutorial. http://www.geocities.com/stevensanvito/page0006.html Steve Sanvito

Doh! Forgot that there's some free ripple images you can d/l from my tut page. Steve
