Subject: Lizard man figures?

ookami ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 11:55 AM · edited Wed, 15 January 2025 at 7:11 PM

Are there any lizard man figures avaiable? I've thought about trying to make one out of the raptor and the P4 guy... but can't do it in less than 3 figures and that seems cumbersome...

Anthony Appleyard ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 2:25 PM

I have seen in a geology periodical a reconstruction of a roughly humanoid sentient being that some reckon might have evolved out of the raptor branch of the dinosaurs (specifically from Stenonychosaurus or similar) if the asteroid hadn't intervened at the end of the Cretaceous. Is that what you were wanting?

Dreamspinner ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 4:45 PM

Yes, I'd be interested also in a figure that was a humanoid version of the raptor that still keeps most of the raptor's features. I have a story line of intelligent dinosaurs that I wanted to make a role playing game out of. I've already figured out the types of armor they'd use and everything. Would enjoy a figure like this in Poser. MUST still have tail and tail needs to be posable to hold weapons.

Ikyoto ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 5:16 PM

East of Eden by Harry Harrison? (or was it West of Eden?)

Ihawk ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 6:21 PM

That sounds like an interesting challenge. I've tried to join all kinds on animals with human models, but I don't care for the raptor too much. If your familiar with Dungeons & Dragons, I made a drider (spider with human torso), and a wemic (lion with torso). I've been looking for a freebee eagle to make a griffon. There is a creature in the game called a saurial that is a cross between dinosaur and human. If you need more info on them or pics, e-mail me at Ihawk29@aol.com. A lizard man sounds very cool.

davo ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 7:00 PM

I don't know if it will fill your need but I created a figure named "gatch" at bbay.com/davo and also zygote sells a figure called "creeper". Davo

SewerRat ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 7:54 PM

gotta gatch 'em all! or was that joke alread made? actually a while ago I was working on a lizard-man, when I'm sketching I almost always sketch lizard-people instead of normal people, I just love the streamlined head and tail...ok so I'm weird but if anyone wants one (and it seems people do) I'll try to finish it off for you =) SewerRat

ookami ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 7:58 PM

Yes... please... please! Finish it! We'd love to see what it looks like!

Ikyoto ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 8:20 PM

Ok SewerRat.. we gotcha now.. the ONLY person allowed to leave people hangin' `round here is ME! Hand over your lizard and no one gets hurt! (oh good god.. I just read that... it sounds so terribly open to inuendo and bad puns... I really should stop myself from hitting the button...)

SewerRat ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 8:21 PM

working on it right now =) unfortunately I'm having some troubles with the software, but once this is sorted out I should be able to give you something to look at SewerRat

Dreamspinner ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 8:29 PM

Iky, do you see the bruise on your forehead from walking straight into that one? I shall not add further to the bruise, I'll give you at least a moment's peace. Yes, Sewer, please finish the figure! Hopefully he will retain the raptor's features, meaning a face that is more like the raptor's than Human. The snout doesn't have to be as long as in the raptor, but should still look like the raptor's head. I can see in my head what it should look like but not a clue how to make such a creature. Mormon has an eagle, found it in his directory, however it's joint parameters need serious help, there are parts of the eagle that at the moment cannot be moved, like the beak doesn't open and close. And I could not get a satisfactory texture map out of it from UV Mapper. I sent the eagle on to DAD to look at since the readme file asked for help on the joints. DAD said it needed serious work but he has so many other projects. Since the author is looking for help as stated in the readme, I don't see why I can't send it out to anyone who wants to try to fix it up for all of us to use. I like Zygote's eagle but don't have that kind of loose cash right now to get it (or the Dragon). E-mail me at drmspinner@earthlink.net. I believe I still have it in it's original zip file. A gryphon would be a wonderful creature to have. Need more mythological creatures!

wyrwulf ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 8:32 PM

Please, what is Mormon's URL? Thanks.

Dreamspinner ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 8:36 PM

Mormon is on Geocities, so why you go to download you get that page not here thing, just go into you location bar and back out the name of the zip file and enter and you'll be in his index. This is where I found the eagle and a few other animals that he's trying to work on. He's zipped them and I assume you could download them directly from his page but I downloaded from his directory. I'm pretty sure he didn't link them to Renderosity because they do need work. But I must say that if they were ironed out, they would be wonderful Poser animals! The eagle will work in Poser at the moment though you can't fully pose it and the parts aren't separate for coloring. And like I said, I couldn't get a good texture map out of it, but then I'm new and maybe didn't work with UV Mapper correctly. Perhaps someone who knows better how to work with UV Mapper could get a map out of it.

wyrwulf ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 8:40 PM

Mormon has pulled all his free stuff, and the only thing of his that I downloaded, Speedy, doesn't have an URL. There is an e-mail, so I will try that.

Dreamspinner ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 8:52 PM

Damn, and I didn't write the URL down either! I do have the zips though that were in his directory. I hope he wouldn't be angry if I sent them out. I would only do it because of his readme file asking for help with the joint parameters.

Ikyoto ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 9:04 PM

Dreamspinner... and how, my sweet, am I to see a bruise on my own forehead? After walking into it that hard, do you think I can see well enough to focus on a mirror - or for that matter would WANT to face myself with this much foot in my mouth??

Dreamspinner ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 9:07 PM

Would be hard also to type with you foot in your mouth up to the knee? I ask you though, do you think Mormon would have fits if I gave out his zips? I don't want him to get pissed, but the files he had do have great potential to be wonderful Poser animals. The eagle looks great! It just needs HELP!

SewerRat ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 9:10 PM

actually I think that mormon didn't model those animals himself, they were public domain that he made posable so I don't think he'd mind if you gave them out SewerRat

Dreamspinner ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 9:17 PM

Okay, just e-mail me at drmspinner@earthlink.net and let me look up the zips. I know I haven't burned them to CD yet.

SewerRat ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 9:20 PM

aaaargh...I swear...if max crashes ONE MORE TIME I'll think of somewhere very creative to stick this lizard! SewerRat (who isn't the least bit frustrated)

Dreamspinner ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 9:25 PM

Perhaps the intelligent Dino/Lizard doesn't like a lowly mammal working on him....they would look down their snouts at us, you know.

SewerRat ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 9:42 PM

Hey! just 'cause rats aren't tall doesn't mean you have to call us "lowly mammals"! but you see we have the advantage over the dino's 'cause they have strong chomping-down muscles, but not unchomping muscles (you can see why I failed biology) and their arms are too teeny tiny to reach their faces so if you tied their mouth closed they wouldn't be able to eatcha anymore =) 'cept they'd probably just disembowl you with their legs then go get another dino to untie their mouth if they were intelligent. ok then...new track. I can type! they can't! sucked in non-opposable-thumb dinosaurs! I'm redoing the dino from scratch, I didn't like how it was turning out. which gives you the chance for input while I'm still in basic stages what sort of feet? human feet, or dino feet? I assume you want a human body, dino head, and dino tail also, three fingers like the raptor, a human hand, or a claw-like hand? SewerRat

SewerRat ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 9:53 PM

AAAAAAAAAAAAARGH! that time max didn't crash...the whole computer did! ugh! luckily I use a network at home, so I can reboot the computer without getting cut off the 'net (since I've done that five times today already, and we pay for local phone calls) I'm getting really very close to saying something rather discouraging about this project, throwing my hands up in dispair, and leaving it for another to do SewerRat

Ikyoto ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 9:59 PM

Get the book East of Eden. They would have eveolved three digit hands - tow fingers and an opposing.

SewerRat ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 10:13 PM

I've read those books a while ago I could always take a look at "Jake" - a Tyrannosaurus Bataar (kinda like a raptor) at uni...that's one scary skeleton. If I ever meet a real one the first thing I'll do is soil my undergarments...you can see from the skeleton that that thing had muscles in it's jaw larger than my arm, and it's not that much taller than me... but...I'm wondering what people want for their models...by rights it should have three fingers, but that would make it harder to make it hold weapons, make hand gestures etc. or I could make a claw-like five fingered hand. The other option is to leave it as a "normal" poser guy hand, and let people use their own MT's on it SewerRat

SewerRat ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 10:17 PM

oh btw I just royally screwed up. I've got the model in max, but I exported it wrong and lost the bodyparts so I'll have to re-export it again. but hey, I'll learn from this mistake, so all's good dino1.jpg opinions? should I move the head back a bit, and is the tail too long? apologies for the image being on it's side, for some reason max didn't want to rotate the camera properly SewerRat

Dreamspinner ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 10:21 PM

Try to make a four fingered hand perhaps with longer digits and tipped with claws. The intelligent species I described in the plans for my role playing game still had long talons but not as long as their cousins the raptors. If not, then just use the five fingered hand of the poser dude and do the claws and longer digits. I agree that three fingers would make it difficult for posing, so four might work better. If too hard to model then go with the five. So while evolving, the raptor picked up a couple more digits. I also gave mine a shorter snout and with a couple of back molars. Though they still were meat eaters, they also could handle vegitation (though farmers weren't held is in as high an esteem as hungers).

Dreamspinner ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 10:23 PM

Okay, didn't see this pic when I went to post. Scale back neck and head until it's in the same proportion to the body. Tail looks fine as long as you can get some joints near the end (hopefully, I know I'm asking a lot, but my dinos can weild weapons with their tails). Other than that, I like the start!

SewerRat ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 10:35 PM

how this for a deal, I'll put as many joints in the tip of the tail as you want, and you set up the joint parameters =) I'm not confidant that I can set up the joints of the tail and still have it looking convincing, but at the very least I'll make it so you can can curl the tail around a weapon, so to the casual observer it'll be holding it scale back the head? ok can do...I was keeping it larger for that top-heavy jaws-of-death look, but of course it would depend on the story =) I'll still want the head leaning forward a bit, so you can have the tail balancing it to make that "sleek" look I've made some dino-feet, but I don't know if I'll be able to convincingly attach them to the man's legs, I might have to steal the velociraptors feet I should be able to do claws, but I'll leave that until the end (I knew someone would suggest four fingers! I just knew it) SewerRat

Dreamspinner ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 10:51 PM

Don't know a thing about joint parameters or how to set them up, but I think I'm gonna have to learn, too many people would be driving me nuts if I didn't (Foxhollow, Iky, DAD..the list goes on). Yeah, four fingers! More raptor looking feet too. And yeah, the head would have to balance the tail.

ookami ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2000 at 11:35 PM

There are several fingernail morphes that could be used to make claws... but claws would be cool! So far, I like it alot!

SewerRat ( ) posted Mon, 14 February 2000 at 1:34 AM

OK, I'm not going to have the lizard-guy done tonight max is constantly crashing, but more than that...I forgot to remove my hand before closing the fridge door, and managed to mangle my fingers, so while holding them in ice it's kinda hard to model Yes, I am typing this with one hand, I'm very experienced at that SewerRat

Tartan ( ) posted Mon, 14 February 2000 at 3:33 AM

ummm There is a Lizard Man figure that could be sliced up. It was created by Bill Fleming. One of our members turned another of his meshes into poser format and made it posable. After he had done that somebody posted to the forum as Bill Fleming and protested. As it turned out, it wasn't and I was contacted by the real Bill Fleming who is a pretty nice fellow besides being one of the best 3d masters on the planet. He didn't have a problem with it and when I asked him about his Troll, Lizardman and Dragonman he said no problem with that either. As long as it wasnt put in a cd collection and sold.. go for it..:) I believe you can eventually find your way using this link but I am about to check it out and will let you know how to get to the meshes. SewerRat thats looking really good.. don't give up now Hope your hand feels better Tartan :) http://www.3dcreatureworkshop.com/creaturehome.html

SewerRat ( ) posted Mon, 14 February 2000 at 3:38 AM

thanks tartan my hand is much better, I can type again (woo!) yeah Bill Fleming does some pretty amazing modelling doesn't he? and he can do it fast, leading up to 2000 he was making a new animal every day or something SewerRat

Tartan ( ) posted Mon, 14 February 2000 at 3:53 AM

Bill is amazing with a style all his own. I just tried to go to the old serious 3d site.. No luck :( I have the troll, dragonman and lizardman and can upload them to my xoom acct if needed... Glad yer feeling better Tartan:)

Quikp51 ( ) posted Mon, 14 February 2000 at 4:26 AM

You know you can pull the models out of Turok2. You'll have to create new maps and all the other Poser stuff to make them posable. The thing is you'll need a format converter like Polytrans.

SewerRat ( ) posted Mon, 14 February 2000 at 4:26 AM

if you could that'd be great! I'll still try to finish off my lizard-guy but you can never have too many critters =) SewerRat

SewerRat ( ) posted Mon, 14 February 2000 at 4:49 AM

OOOOOW! MY BROTHER JUST SLAMMED MY OTHER HAND IN THE DOOR! am I just lucky today or what? Quikp51: the problem with that is you wouldn't be allowed to distribute the models I guess with objaction mover you could give them out, but I don't think enough people would have turok and the ability to convert them to make that an option SewerRat (who thinks he'll avoid doors of all kinds for the rest of the night)

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Mon, 14 February 2000 at 8:33 AM

I know that DD over at the PFO created a cool looking animation of a lizard man ... He used the Raptor head and tail, the male body kinda muscled up and the creeper or gremlin feet from zygote ...

Tartan ( ) posted Mon, 14 February 2000 at 9:27 AM

Sewer, I just checked out Cafe3D where these models used to be also and they weren't there. I would be glad to post them but I think I would rather ask Bill first and will be sending him an email about it later. Personally I don't think he will have any objections but its best to make sure. Tartan

SewerRat ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2000 at 3:25 AM

aaaah alas I don't have the creeper figure to steal feet from, even if zygote would allow it tartan: fair enough, it never hurts to get permission first =) That will just save the trouble of making a figure we aren't allowed to distribute sorry, I was busy all day and couldn't make the lizard-guy (I was doing some tests to get into a college that teaches 3d animation) - what is the best way to attach a tail to a man? if I add the parts in the hiearchy editor it just makes the tail into a new figure...should I rebuild the hiearchy from scratch? or just have the tail as a secondary figure parented to his hips? That would be my preference as long as people don't mind it having that extra icon in the hiearchy editor. It would also allow the removal of the tail for sitting poses etc. I've still got to do claws and feet, then texture map the model SewerRat
