Subject: Victoria 2.0 & Poser Pro Pack incompatability

idolitry ( ) posted Sat, 08 June 2002 at 8:26 AM · edited Tue, 24 December 2024 at 11:36 PM

Hello, I recently purchased Victoria 2.0 from DAZ 3d, and tried to install her on my system which consists of Poser 4,03, Poser Pro Pack, & Pro Pack service release 3. Victoria installs ok, but when I try to get her into the document window in Poser, the program stops responding. I have tried uninstalling Poser & then just installing Poser 4.03, & Victoria installs ok, & I can then load her into the document window. I saved her as a .pz3 file & installed the Pro Pack, & SR3, I loaded the .pz3 file created previously with no problems and added Victoria to the figure library. However when I tried to load the figure I added from the .pz3 file into the document window, my system froze up. I have shut down all background tasks with the exception of systray & explorer prior to doing any install, does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can access the Victoria model from the figure library. I have emailed DAZ, & curious labs, so far their suggestions have not worked.

If there is an rsr file in the geom file or the character file delete it and then try to load the character. Ron

Folder I should say instead of file. Ron

idolitry ( ) posted Sat, 08 June 2002 at 12:58 PM

Thankyou for that ronmolina, I tried your suggestion after installing the Pro Pack & deleted all the rsr files from both the geometry folder & the character folder, but the Pro Pack still locked up. I also bought the French Maid outfit, bizzarly this will load & pose in the Pro Pack.

Maybe you haven't got enough RAM.

gryffnn ( ) posted Sat, 08 June 2002 at 1:09 PM

What operating system are you using and how much RAM? Sometimes Poser seems to be locked up, but will load the figure if you give it enough time.

If this is the tech support thread I think it is, my personal suspicion is that you may be out of memory. I think your email to tech support indicated that you have Windows 9x with 512MB of RAM and were trying to load Vicky 2 with maps along with Stephanie and some outfits. I don't know the file sizes offhand (mental note to get these figures and try them on my system), but my guess is that between the figures, clothes, maps, associated calculations, and memory required for Poser and the OS, you used up all your RAM. I'd be curious to know if the hard drive is working after the "hang", which would indicate that it's merely taking a long time to load. Also, how long did you let it sit before deciding it had crashed? Many applications will be reported as "not responding" when they're simply too busy processing something to act on user input. You may want to let it sit for up to an hour to see if the figure winds up loading. If that is the problem, get more RAM. However, consumer versions of Windows don't use RAM above 512MB making adding more RAM to those systems a wasted exercise. Therefore, if you do go the more RAM route, you should also upgrade to Windows 2000 or, better, XP Pro. hmm, don't know why that text showed up after the signature...

Vicky 2.0 is a big girl (memory-wise). Are you waiting long enough, Poser may just be loading the figure. smerc

KateTheShrew ( ) posted Sat, 08 June 2002 at 2:26 PM

It would be a good idea to get one of the ram management programs out there. Windows 9x is notorious for hoarding RAM. A lot of the slow loading problems I had were solved when I installed Rambooster. Definitely a handy thing to have around. Kate

If you can get Vickie II to load all by herself you could delete all the morphs you never plan to use (use the Hiearcial Editor, clock on show all), try especially to kill the full-face ones you don't plan on using. Then resave her as "Vickie II lite" (or something) as a new figure. However, 256 (let alone 512) Mb should actaully be enoght to load a couple of Vickie IIs and some clothing in Win 98/95, but you would be pushing it past two. I don't think Win 98 actually uses much past 256 Mb for one application.

I guess that you got me guys, yes Nosfiratu this is the tech support thread you think it is, and the hard drive is still accessing after the "hang", and smerc I wasn't waiting long enough, it's taking 50 seconds to load Vicky 2.0. I checked my memory usage & I'm using 549.3MB to load a Vicky 2.0. Guess it's time for au upgrade. By the way Nosfiratu, re-reading the title of my post it occurs to me that I seem to be critisizing your company, that was'nt the intention, I apologise for any offence I may have caused

Nosfiratu ( ) posted Sat, 08 June 2002 at 2:36 PM

No apology needed and absolutely no offense taken :-)

steveshanks ( ) posted Sat, 08 June 2002 at 2:54 PM

pro pack doesn't use the geometry rsr file so vikki will take a long time to load compared with p4 i'd leave it and see if she'll load...takes 30 seconds on my 700mhz with 512mb ram.......Steve

idolitry ( ) posted Sat, 08 June 2002 at 3:03 PM

Thanks steve, it's taking a little longer on my system, patience is not, unfortunately, one of my virtues

steveshanks ( ) posted Sat, 08 June 2002 at 3:08 PM

mine neither LOL.....how longs it taking and whats your cpu, i have a lap top with a 1ghz but only 128 of ram if a comparison would help....Steve

idolitry ( ) posted Sat, 08 June 2002 at 3:28 PM

50 seconds, I have a PIII running at 500 mhz, with 512mb ram

Jaqui ( ) posted Sat, 08 June 2002 at 5:03 PM

idolitry, poser 4.03 and pro pack, a p3 at 600 mhz with only 384mb ram, takes a bit but I can load vicky2..actually can load a cr2 of over 30 mb, just takes about 40 seconds. we ( Stormrage and I ) have a couple of cr2's that hit close to 50 mb. ~g~ it hurts trying to do anything, but once done it's a great character.

Roy G ( ) posted Sat, 08 June 2002 at 6:39 PM

I'm wondering why Pro Pack doesn't use rsr files when it takes longer to load the cr2 files?

I'm also a little surprised that Pro Pack seems to need more memory for the same characters?

It almost sound's like Poser 4.03 is an enhanced Pro Pack. :)

idolitry ( ) posted Sun, 09 June 2002 at 5:56 AM

KateTheShrew has solved my problem, I downloaded Rambooster & installed it, Vicky 2.0 now takes 7-9 seconds to load on my system. I still have to shut all tasks except systray, & explorer though. Still that's a small price to pay for being able to play with a great model. Now all I have to do is get to grips with Poser .

Nance ( ) posted Sun, 09 June 2002 at 4:57 PM

Just curious, but how much RAM are you using now with just Vicky2 & some maps? (549.3MB mentioned above sounded way too high)

idolitry ( ) posted Mon, 10 June 2002 at 1:23 PM

Hi Nance, I've just checked using the resource monitor, with all tasks except systray & explorer shut down I loaded Vicky 2, & dressed her in the full gothic armour, including the full chainmail mat from the DAZ 3d site, total memory usage 292.9MB, rendering in the document window with just the default settings in Poser (document window reset to 530 by 600 pixels) ramped it up to 312.5MB

Nance ( ) posted Wed, 12 June 2002 at 2:26 AM

Still kinda curious & couldn't tell how much of your 292.9Mb was system & what was from which Poser source, so, as a benchmark, watched RAM usage here:

-20Mb used loading P4 app

-30MB more to load a 21Mb CR2 with Vicky & hair and 5 maps (equivalent to 3123312324 bits)

-60Mb more while rendering 600x600 with 3*1024 shadow maps

idolitry ( ) posted Thu, 13 June 2002 at 4:13 PM

Hi Nance, I've tried it again, checking the windows system monitor.

Everything closed down except systray & explorer - 213.8Mb

Poser Pro loaded with empty document window - 257Mb

Vicky 2 Loaded - 280.3Mb

SDMAT chainmail full (Daz Gothic Armour) - 287.3Mb

Vicky 2 fully armoured in Gothic Armour - 324.6Mb

Render at 530 x 600 pixels, 351.9Mb while rendering.

So, Poser Pro Loaded = 43.2Mb

Vicky 2 Loaded = 23.3Mb

Vicky 2 & SDMAT = 30.3Mb

Vicky 2 & SDMAT & Full Gothic Armour = 67.6Mb

Does this sound about right?

Nance ( ) posted Fri, 14 June 2002 at 10:02 AM

Other than the 20Mb for my P4 and 40Mb for your ProPak, it all sounds pretty close to what I am using.
