Subject: Well, that didn't take long

FyreSpiryt ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 6:13 AM · edited Sun, 19 January 2025 at 2:44 PM

I did my own little experiment on how T&A boosts viewing numbers with a parody-ish "Naked Vicky in a temple with a sword" (and a bowl of oatmeal) pic, and was going to pay attention to how long it took to get the most hits in my gallery. I figured it'd happen by Sunday. Well, approximately nine hours later, "Are you sure I have to be naked for this?" is topping my view list at 251 hits, with the bowl of oatmeal solo running second at 164. ::shrugs:: I'm just going to sit back and be amused now.

FyreSpiryt ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 6:15 AM

Whoops, my mistake. "Longing for my better half" is running second at 210. "Soul-hurting goodness" is third. Not as amusing, but I'm still just going to chuckle for a while. ^_~

There's no accounting for taste. If it makes you feel any better, I'm still puzzling over why the haystack has outdownloaded all my other Free Stuff offerings, other than the shower. What are 1727 people going to do with a haystack?

c1rcle ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 6:28 AM

that's a funny picture Fyre, very good too :) nviatwas (abbreviated) will always sell well, must start putting a bit more flesh in my thumbnails, then I can catch you up :) Rob

I get the humor in this, but I don't know.... the snooty attitude can get to me sometimes. I'm endlessly, permanently interested and inspired by the sight of beautiful women/pretty girls in real life/in pictures wearing nice clothes/nothing at all, and I take every possible opportunity to get a glimpse of such delightful creatures. It's in my blood, in my genetic maekup, in my hormones. It's not some kind of weakness of mind or lewdness or a dirty mind or anything, it's the way I function. Always will. Comes naturally. It's not anything I make a fuss about, or try to hide either, since it's natural. The whole 'nviatws' debate that has gone on here and many other debates about how sex sells, naked women sell etc, hell, why so surprised about it? Maybe there are guys who don't have this compulsion, well fine for them, but I do, and as I say again, it's natural, and you know what? My wife thinks so too and doesn't give a shit if I check out other women or have girlie mags at home. She could care less. And if she wanted to check out cute guys (she sometimes does too) she's welcome. I love her the same anyway. Of course a bit of naked skin in a thumb pulls hits! There's lots of guys out there who HAVE to click on it, just to see whether the pic was worth seeing. If we mammals (which is what we are) didn't function this way, our species would be extict. Simple. Of course, if people here take themselves terribly seriously as artists and want to be appreciated for it without naked skin, fine. I appreciate that too. I'm just not so keen on being continually looked down on. And hey, this is no big issue, I'm not madly offended or anything, I just want to give this a balanced view, to hell with what people think. :] FishNose

c1rcle ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 8:18 AM

hehehe my wife gave up being annoyed by me checking out the talent, the mags & movies have to stay locked away while the kids are awake but I don't mind, summer is coming and the girls are getting naked :) 100% red blooded sex obsessed male mammal here. Rob

Hey Little Dragon! I figured out where all those haystack downloads went...Aliens!! - Think about it, what happens when they want to render "crop circle" pictures?... The truth is..they NEED that baby! Dave ;-)

My first picture here - At The Edge Of Light - Had a picture of a woman's stomach in the thumbnail and eluded to the rest of her being bare. Though when they clicked the image, it turns out that there was no nudity afterall it still garnered 508 hits. Not bad for a first post. My second picture - Her Life Was Not Yours To Take - showed a closeup view of Michael's face with a new texture that I'm working on. It only reached 174 hits. It's obvious that sex sells. But that's only because it's what people want. Art has always been driven by what people want. I'm not going to stop it now. No, I don't create images for the purpose of hits. Nor do I create images so some guy can get off. I express myself, no matter what it takes. I just posted another picture 2 days ago - The Soft Caress Of Love - took 654 hits. I'm content with knowing that my pictures of women will be the most viewed.

Turtle ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 10:40 AM

I figured this out long ago. 1. I write the word nudity in the title and I get tons of hits. 2 With some people there name alone brings lots of hits. 3. If I've done a really good render it does seem to get hits. But sometimes the ones I like the very best, just seem to sit there and very few look at them.

Love is Grandchildren.

Just wanted to say Leah that your images are brilliant! - "White Light" was just fabulous! Thank goodness there will always be a place on Renderosity for all kinds of images and themes. :-) Dave :-)

Same here. My "Odalisque" thumb has drawn 454... oops, there's another one -- *455* hits in just over 24 hours. It's not even salacious, it just hints at a nude woman on a bed -- which is what the image is, true, but it's gotten 3 times the hits of things that have been in there for months.

Netherworks ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 11:42 AM

I don't mind anyone's content... whether I agree with it or not. I think the worse thing is censorship. I think there should be none... absolutely zero. As long as there's some sort of warning (nudity or violence) indication, as does exist in the galleries... if you click it, yer on your own for what comes up.

I agree in principal, Netherworks, but there's a difference between censorship and enforcing community standards. This site is owned and operated by someone else who lets us use it for free. I'll support your right to free speech, but if you're at a party at my house and you start saying stuff that's pissing off me and the other guests and messing up the place for everyone else, I'll throw you out and you can exercise your rights elsewhere. Is that censorship? There isn't a society on earth that can survive anarchy. Rules are there to govern people who don't have the social skills to govern themselves. Jefferson said: "The government governs best which *governs least."* not *"which governs not."* In my experience, those who've had a hard time with the rules here could freely post whatever they like at Renderotica. If you're free to express it elsewhere, you're not being censored. "There are bonds which lead to slavery, and there are bonds which lead to freedom." There. I'm done. If you want to continue this we can do it in a new thread.

LittleDragon, I know what you mean about th haystacks - my most popular download is still 'Brendan Walker - Just a nice guy" for p4man. Huh? this is his fourth repost- so I have confiremd downloads for him of about 1000 or so. I don't get it. Shaun, the half naked blonde surfer guy, has had half the downloads. I don't get it either. my 2nd popular DL are the giger walls textures - but that I do understand :)

Valandar ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 2:51 PM

Well, my most popular pictures are "Puttin' Up Yer Dukes" (my Armor Baby, which the Chat crew voted into the Hot 20 not long before C&D latched onto Legume as their idol), and "Ready for Love"... the thumb was the central torso of a wet, nude woman, but the actual pic... heheheh, well, it was unique. And no nudity. I admit, it was a bait-and-switch. As for freestuff products, without a doubt my most downloaded one was the Land Dragon - almost 7,000 downloads. Now if only I could get storage space for it again, the link is broken again...

Agree with Hiram about free speech, you are free to express yourself, but I should be free to avoid your expressions if I'd like. I view and enjoy "adult" content on line, (nudity and "dirty" jokes especially), but it bothers me when I stumble across it without trying. It especially bothers me because our 10-year-old daughter could stumble across it just as easily, even with content filtering software in place. For a good example of what I mean, search on "cartoon mpeg" on google or yahoo. Back to the topic at hand: How dou you think a picture titled "Naked oatmeal" would fare?

hauksdottir ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 5:46 PM

jchimim, Title that "Sowing Wild Oats", make sure that the bowl is a pinkish tan and for the thumbnail focus on the lower curve of the bowl against a white tablecloth (so that it would strongly resemble a person's bottom against a sheet). A nice bumpmap on the sheet/tablecloth would give a hint of elegance. For the main picture, pull back and show a hand over the bowl of oatmeal, gently shaking a spoonful of brown sugar or some such. Carolly

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 5:47 PM

Lyrra:
Brendan Walker's popularity might have something to do with the fact that he reminds some people of Anthony Stewart Head (Rupert Giles, the Watcher), on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

HEY!! They've added Commercial/Non-Commercial Use and Standalone/Add-on flags to Free Stuff! Neat!

kbade ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 6:21 PM

That many haystack downloads? Where are all of the "Vicky as the Farmer's Daughter" pics?

FyreSpiryt ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 7:07 PM

It's not the lack of clothing I'm lampooning; it's the lack of quality. Took me two afternoons to make (keeping in mind I multitask like an octopus with MPD, which means I have 3 unrelated programs open at the same time). It's all canned stuff. Daz's free lo-res textures, free sword download, canned poses, practically canned face, and the only hint of postwork is putting on my signature. It's crap; it was made to be crap. I've even got the awful elbow joint and icky weird shadows under the breast featured in the thumbnail. "Odalisque" shown above is obviously MUCH better quality, but at just over 24 hours for myself, AYSIHTBNFT? has 415 hits, contrasted with Odalisque's 455. That's only an 8% difference between obvious hard work and obvious crap! I'm sorry, but I find this amusing. You're welcome to be counter-amused by the fact that I'll click on almost anything with a cat in the thumbnail (I adore kitties). As for enjoying pictures of naked women, remember this from the list of differences between men and women: "Men's magazines are filled with pictures of naked women. Women's magazines... are filled with pictures of half-naked women. This is because the female body is a work of art, while the male body is hairy and lumpy and should never be seen by the light of day." ^_~ (JK. There are many male bodies that should DEFINITELY be seen by the light of day. : ) )

Mine does not happen to be one of those... too many ribs visible. ^_^

kbade ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 9:44 PM

I generally agree with FyreSpirit's take on the aesthetics of the female form versus the male. I am less sure that the lack of clothing is entirely unrelated to the lack of quality. A Poser image of a clothed figure will only magnify or multiply many of the flaws FyreSpirit correctly identifies in low quality images; a good image of a clothed figure will generally require post-work. And I write this as someone who is admittedly lacking in post-work skills. Of course, I also agree with many of the other comments here to the extent that the ability to render semi-realistic (or intentionally unrealistic) nudes (esp. women) may well be a motivating factor for some to buy Poser in the first instance. It was certainly no accident on the part of CL/DAZ (and their predecessors) that some of the models have lacked genitalia;-)

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Fri, 21 June 2002 at 1:46 AM

No, Ratteler, you need star appeal to draw crowds to the Oatmeal ... a naked Wilford Brimley. And now that I've burned that image permanently into your brain cells, I bid you good night.
