Holy smokes! I won? Thanks guys! Okay, I challenge you all to create images where you paint with light. This challenge really applies to the people working in 3d, but 2d people can play too, if they're really creative... Here is what I mean: You can have any objects and any background you want in the scene, but they all have to be GRAYSCALE. All textures for 3d objects must be shades of gray, all background images need to be completely devoid of color. Here's the kicker: Your lights can be any color you want. You can have as few or as many different lights as you want. Use light to paint color into your scene. You can have as much or as little color as you want. The images can be photorealistic or as abstract as you want. The idea is to play with light to create interesting compositions of form and color. For 2d people it is even more challenging: SIMULATE the effect of lighting grayscale objects with colored lights in your 2d work. Bonus points to 2d people who pay close attention to how colored light and shadow interact. Sound good?

Gorodin ( ) posted Tue, 04 June 2002 at 9:42 PM

I should mention: Reflective and refractive surfaces are fine, as long as the raytrace material does not introduce a color bias. I know that a lot of the Bryce default metals have a little color, even the silver, so be careful.

CrystalWizard ( ) posted Tue, 04 June 2002 at 9:59 PM

hmmm this fits nicely with the 2D forum theme which is almost exactly the same. can you enter an image that we've also used for the 2d forum theme?

Gorodin ( ) posted Tue, 04 June 2002 at 10:05 PM

Don't see why not... Do you have a link to the 2D forum theme? I'd be interested in seeing what people are doing there.

CrystalWizard ( ) posted Tue, 04 June 2002 at 10:32 PM

Attached Link: http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?ForumID=12358&Form.ShowMessage=730303

That's the link to the theme annoucement.

Gorodin ( ) posted Tue, 04 June 2002 at 11:03 PM

Wow, that does have a lot in common with my challenge. Cool. Hopefully people will do both.

created in Bryce 4 inside a hollow cube with holes in it. bumpy glass sphere (all 'colours' are from the grey scale) red/orange/yellow and blue lights outside the cube. grey clouds. volumetric world. 2.5 hours render time only 16 objects and 1334 polygons.

This what you have in mind? Poser for the girl, rendered in Bryce, no post-work. I made her reflective and went in and turned off all the other colors in it. 6 or 7 colored lights, all carefully placed, and this is what you get.

What a great idea for a challenge. Not only was this fun, but I learned alot along the way. Rendered in Bryce 4. Figure from Poser. All objects are flat white including the box. Something like 11 lights over all. Enjoy!

Here's a quickie done in Poser. 1 figure, 1 floor, 4 lights. The only geometry that is not white is the iris of the eyes(50% gray) and the pupil(black). I added some grain (grayscale scan, multiply layer) in photoshop.

this is terragen. there's only one light, the sun, and it's set to a nice reddish color.

RaysOfLight ( ) posted Sun, 09 June 2002 at 1:06 PM

when does the challenge end? do i still have a day or two to finish my entry?

tanstaafl90 ( ) posted Sun, 09 June 2002 at 1:40 PM

RaysOfLight, I think you have near or untill the end of the month to get it in. Last months was posted on the 3rd, and voting started on the 27th or so. I'm sure you will have plenty of time to finish. Cheers and good luck

RimRunner ( ) posted Sun, 09 June 2002 at 2:50 PM

Yup, the challenge runs to the last few days of the month.. then we take about 5 days for voting to see who'll wins :)

excellent :)

Gorodin ( ) posted Sun, 09 June 2002 at 9:00 PM

file_11260.jpg

here's an abstract one. 1 semi-reflective object, 2 colored lights.

RaysOfLight ( ) posted Sun, 09 June 2002 at 9:16 PM

funky stuff by the way does 'painting' with gray lights count? :p

CrystalWizard ( ) posted Sun, 09 June 2002 at 9:26 PM

should, as long as you didnt' assing grey to the object you're coloring with the grey light.

RaysOfLight ( ) posted Sun, 09 June 2002 at 9:31 PM

ummmm well, everything is gray, but the light is a barely-noticeable shade of really light blue does that count? i could post what i have now if you want, just so i know if it's okay

RaysOfLight ( ) posted Sun, 09 June 2002 at 9:47 PM

file_11261.jpg

okay, here it is does this count?

RimRunner ( ) posted Sun, 09 June 2002 at 10:03 PM

Looks great to me. Wondering about the "hidden" figure there though. ;) Looks like he(?) is screaming.

The doctor says I have way too much blood in my caffeine system.

RaysOfLight ( ) posted Sun, 09 June 2002 at 10:10 PM

he is screaming the image is a combination of ideas from me and my girlfriend i did this tutorial on making lights like that in Bryce, and i had the idea of someone crouching under the window then my girlfriend had the idea of him sitting on a chair, staring at the light, with the demons in his mind surrounding him i combined the two the 'demon', is his guilt the bursting light is what he has been denied he can't face it, because it was his fault he ended up there

Gorodin ( ) posted Sun, 09 June 2002 at 10:27 PM

This counts absolutely. You can have as much or as little color as you want. BTW, the volumetric fog is spoofing a light source that does not exist...

here it is, the final version

Baztd ( ) posted Mon, 10 June 2002 at 6:46 AM

My Viper Fighter made in glass rendered in Bryce 5 with the sun behind it and 6 lights inside the engines (one red and one yellow in each engine) render time 10:36:15 Total intersect attempts: 3.83 quadrillion i also did my S.I.D Fighter in the same way, but it diddnt turn out so well (after a 28 hour render)

Gorodin ( ) posted Mon, 10 June 2002 at 10:26 AM

That one looks very cool. Interesting idea.

Here's my entry :) The ground plane is dark grey and the figure is pitch black. 4 lights used, 0 shadow casting. >:]

file_11265.jpg

Wow Tibbe ! thats rather impressive ! i love the effect of the floor. i have another one. (i like this theme, can you tell) its a variation on my last one. Spitfire cast in (clear) glass standing on a (smoked) glass stand. the Table and chair have a wood texture re-coloured in grey-scale. the candle flame is a fire texture (again, re-coloured in greys) with one red and one yellow light inside it. to give the flame colour (those lights did not affect the flame texture, dont know why) i used two spotlights. render time about 55 minutes. Bryce 4

Tibbe ( ) posted Tue, 11 June 2002 at 5:56 PM

hehe thanx!! i like your pic alot, but something wierd with the propeller, heh o well no wait, its supposed to be like that (?)

RaysOfLight ( ) posted Tue, 11 June 2002 at 6:04 PM

i'll have to do another attempt on this topic :P

Baztd ( ) posted Tue, 11 June 2002 at 7:13 PM

file_11266.jpg

The prop. to give the impression of movement on the fully textured model, i added a dark transparent disc around it. that disc is still there, but with a glass texture (maybe i should of removed it?) thats why it looks like that (refraction and all that) BTW does anyone have a good camo texture that would work well on a Spitfire ? the one i did looks kind of naff. RaysOfLight: your pic is cool. i thought of doing one like that myself (with the window) but i had no idea of how to make it interesting. (which explains my abstract first image) you managed to do that in a way that even has a story behind it ! nice touch. this picture is not realy an entry to this comp, but as it took 1 day, 4 hours, 56 minutes and 59 seconds to render, i aint gonna waste it :o) its my S.I.D fighter i mentioned in my Viper post.

Hi all, Here is my entry, I hope you enjoy :)

Tibbe ( ) posted Fri, 14 June 2002 at 8:20 AM

i dont get how u ppl get like a full hour of renderertime on simple pics like that? even if i have ultra detailed shadows and volumetric lights all of my renderers take MAX 20min, and i only got a 868mhz 128mb ram geforce 3 titanium, like wtf every rendering i see i hear bout ppl saying how it took them hours, i just dont get it, what do u ppl have? a 300mhz?? heh sowwie im just confused

KingHeroical ( ) posted Fri, 14 June 2002 at 12:25 PM

'Simple pics like that'. That's my favorite part.......

Gorodin ( ) posted Fri, 14 June 2002 at 12:54 PM

Well, Tibbe, after looking at your gallery, I see why most of your images take 20min max to render. Most of my images render in under 20 as well. But keep in mind that when you a) have multiple light sources, b) have raytrace reflective surfaces and c) have reflective/refractive surfaces, render time goes up exponentially. Add to this the complexity of the object (# polys, etc.) and there can be a large render time. KingHeroical has @20 light sources in his render, and it looks like the glass is refractive. If he is using Bryce, I'm a little impressed it took only an hour...

Gorodin ( ) posted Fri, 14 June 2002 at 12:59 PM

As an example, the 1st image I posted in this thread had 4 light sources and rendered in poser in about 2min. The second one, the abstract one, was 2 light sources inside a refelctive squashed torus and rendered in Bryce in @ 50min.

Tibbe ( ) posted Fri, 14 June 2002 at 1:41 PM

"Each fruit has between 2 and 5 light sources." well sorry i read it as "the image has 4 lights in it" heh, and the glass, well i didnt notice the glass actually, sowwie :)

Modeled and rendered in ZBrush (the head turned out as sort of a later iteration of the first thing I modeled in that application, but purely by accident; I didn't start in on it until I wandered through here and saw this challenge), with some touchup in Photoshop. Four light sources.

(Also, hi; this is my first post here, though I've been lurking on and off for, er, two or three years.)

Xanda: That is rather spectacular m8 ! Very nicely done.

Xanda ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 11:30 AM

Thanks Baztd. :) I saw the challenge and thought using light to create the image rather than colouring an object with lights. ^^;;;;

RimRunner ( ) posted Fri, 21 June 2002 at 11:58 AM

Time to start wrapping this one up. Final Submissions will be accepted until the 25th. That will give us 5 days to vote on 'em before we select the winner. Good luck to all!! Some really impressive entries. Very creative!

bluevenus ( ) posted Fri, 21 June 2002 at 5:04 PM

KingHeroical ( ) posted Tue, 25 June 2002 at 11:55 PM

RimRunner ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 9:27 AM

There were quite a few entries this month.. and a lot of unique takes on how to get this done. First off, thanks to Gorodin for a very new and inventive challenge. Quite an interesting undertaking once you got started, only working with lights to add the feeling and color to the scenes. A lot of great entries as well, very impressive works all the way around. Sorry that I wasnt able to group all the entries into a formal list for you this time, been very busy working but they are all here in (or linked) in this thread So.. on with the voting. My vote, after much though and going from one to another, finally landed on: Baztd. Textures are great, and it really took a while to see that indeed he had done things in gray and only used a few lights to achieve the colored look. Fantastic.

KingHeroical ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 10:36 AM

Which of Baztd's images? He seems to have 4 entries.... My vote goes out to.... Gorodin's Abstract image.

Gorodin ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 10:45 AM

I like Xanda's Phoenix and KnightHeroical's vending machine, but I think i have to go with Baztd's model airplane.

Xanda ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 11:57 AM

I'll have to support Oneironaut here.

RimRunner ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 12:26 PM

Yup, you're right... Glass Spitfire would be the one I'm a votin' on. :)
