THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Beginner Bryce WIP need . . .

This is a render I turned in for an online course I'm taking. Working two jobs and having only one week to do this assignment left a lot of stuff needing fixing. I plan on working on the ground and stones and the lamp part of my lamp post is a little bit off, I don't need help with these. What I need help with is the wood grain on the bench. I'd like it to run horizontal. I've tried using the x,y,z things in the frequency editor but have had no luck. Is this the right place to be or should I be in the DTE? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also, I don't have a lot of art background. I've been trying to avoid the centering mistakes and the too heavy - too light in the composition mistakes. So please, if I'm making any of these types of mistakes I'd like to know. Any constructive criticism is welcome. Thanks, Ang

You don't need to go so far as to enter the DTE. The material editor is just fine for what you are trying to do. click the green button(labeled with a red arrow) to bring up the editor, and use the rotation controls(circled in red) to adjust the rotation of the texture. Also, if you want exact control with the rotation, you can click the degrees(the right side fo the rotation controls) and manually enter the amount you want(you can do this in numerous places throughout Bryce.

Just a side note: you image seems to be a bit light to the right side. this could be, perhaps, do to the lack of objects after the tree to the right. Just because this is the edge of the picture, does not mean you have to stop placing objects.

If you click the link above, you can find my entry to the June challenge. the idea was to create a realisitic looking desk, which I like to think I accomplished. There are several things that you cannot see in the picture(such as more CD cases, some robot like figures, a ceiling, complete with bump map, two more walls, and a floor) but I added them for the light quality.

Thanks big_hoovie,
Will have to try this right away. I made the bench myself and would like to use it in the future but I want to have a good material attached to it. I see what you mean about the righthand side. It needs a branch or shadow or something coming in off the right side. LOL, I'm looking at my desk and thinking how nice it would be if it were as clean as the one you created. Brief description of mine - 3 beer bottles, 1 bowl, a back scratcher, tons of papers, lots of pens, and much more.
:)

lol...the desk that I created is my "dream" desk...I wish it was that clean....mine has lots of papers, a PDA, mroe papers, 3 shot glasses, a beer top...more papers...a beer opener that talks...a pacifier...and more papers....my computer is in there somewhere too... =c)

It took a lot of tries but I finally got the grain going almost perfect. It really helped knowing that I was using the right thingies. Thanks again. Now I'm trying to get the rocks to look a bit more natural, one at a time. It's going to take a while. :-)

Looks like you are using terrains as rocks. Have you thought about using the rock icon next to the tree....that is if you are using Bryce 5, I don't think Bryce 4 has rocks. If you have Bryce 5 create a rock then sink it into the ground.

I like your lighting here. Seems like there should be something more on the left side, though. A boulder perhaps, or a bush, or you could rotate the camera so the bench is more to the left of the scene. and maybe there should be some rocks and tufts of grass/weeds scattered around in the background? Just suggestions, though. I like this image. Also, just as a general suggestion, not necessarily related to this particular image, try changing around the view so the horizon isn't always right in the center. It can make for a much more dynamic image. By the way, Bryce 4 does have rocks.

More great ideas, forgot all about the great plants I found at 3Dplants. So far everthing in this pic is my own, but definately needs a little scrubby grass. The rocks are rocks from Bryce 5. I've completely changed them. I picked only roundish ones this time, hated that sharp edge on the first ones. I also agree about the horizon line, Sylvia has drummed that into us right from the first lesson, to move it, don't know how I forgot not once but twice. Will try to remember to move it when I add the grass. I'm also wondering if my little tree in the bucket shouldn't go? Does it seem out of character with the rest of the scene or should I keep it, what do you guys think?

Interesting scene. Is Sarah Michelle Geller out there somewhere?

I would say if you are planning on keeping the tree with the bucket, I would either make a rock-covered path that goes by the benches, or a paved/cement walkway that goes by the benches. If you decide to get rid of the bucket, then you may not need a bucket, but keep in mind, that without a walkway of any sort, I get the feeling of surrealism, as you don't normally expect to see a bench without a path. BTW, you pic has improved quite a bit since the first one. big_hoovie

My suggestions: make the benches smaller, about a half of the present size. Or make the lamps much bigger. this way they are out of proportion. I also think you'd be better off putting all trees in buckets with that kind of ground. Finally, yes, what hoovie said about a walk-way. Just flatten the rocks in Y dimension (to about height of 2) and arange them. They don't have to be flush with each other.

whew, lots more work :-). I was thinking about making the lamp posts into those straight type which are generally shorter because I think I sensed the same thing, that they were too short. And my original with its sharp rocks was an attempt at a cobblestone type path. I don't agree about putting all the trees in buckets, the others are supposed to be native to the landscape. Well, this has been very, very helpful. I love how much the scene has changed since talking to you guys and how much more can be done to it. I have to put it on the back burner for a bit. But I definately want to make more changes to it before posting it in my gallery. I'll put a link in here when I get that done in case anyone's curious about the what the end result will end up looking like. And if there's anymore ideas for improvement on this, I'd love to hear them, thanks again everyone! Ang
