Subject: A question to you Americans:-)

gebe ( ) posted Fri, 12 July 2002 at 4:51 PM · edited Thu, 14 November 2024 at 4:08 PM

Can you tell me please what exactly is "Eastern time"? Does it correspond to NY or to somewhere else (CA?). Do you have summer time? If yes, what is the relation to the greenwich point time? A clear answer would be great, because it helpsme for fixing beginnings and ends of challenges (contests). Thanks:-) Guitta

I'm not an "American" per se, but I live in U.S. I think I can explain. "eastern time" corresponds NY. There is a -3 hour difference between here and California. And there is a +5 hr difference between here and GMT. I hope I helped a bit :)

Hi Guitta, Yes, you have it correct. Eastern time is the Eastern seaboard of the United States. So N.Y. is Eastern time. Most of the United States goes on Daylight Savings Time in the spring and goes off Daylight Savings Time in the fall. There are a few states that do not use Daylight Savings Time (Arizona, Hawaii, and parts of Indiana (I think). When Daylight Savings Time goes into effect clocks 'spring' forward, and when Daylight Savings Time ends clocks 'fall' backward. So right now its 4:10 PM Arizona time and Pacific Time, 5:10 PM Mountain Time 6:10 PM Central time, and 7:10 PM ET (CNN news). I'm not sure of the relationship of Greenwich point time to time in the U.S.. Renderosity says that GMT is -6 which Arizona time (the same as Pacific time right now). I hope that helps. Charles

Hi Guitta, It all boils down to time zones. As you probably know, the earth is divided into time zones, which are bands that normally flow from the north to the south pole. These bands are defined as the shift in the start of the day due to the time the sun rises in a particular part of the world. Because of time zones, you don't normally have a situation where it is the dead of night at 9:00 AM in the morning. Everyone starts the day with the sun rising and ends the day with the falling. Daylight savings time is related to this, since it is a system that maximizes the amount of daylight there is during the winter months(at least in the US). During the winter, days are shorter, so the clocks are turned back an hour to allow people to have as much light during the day as possible. In the summer, when the days are longer, the clock is pushed forward an hour. So it is all related to the way our planet is shaped and its relation to the sun. Hope this answers the question...

Guitta, As you have access to the web you might as well use it. I think you'll find this site useful for comparing times across the world. http://www.timezoneconverter.com/cgi-bin/tzc.tzc - Jack

Eastern standard is guided by a clock in Greenwich Connecticut, that's why it's also called Greenwich time.. :)

scifiguy ( ) posted Sat, 13 July 2002 at 11:28 AM

errr...no, Greenwich time is "0" and its in England. All times zones are based on + or - from "Greenwich Mean Time". Official time in the US is kept by an atomic clock in Colorado. Guitta, the US actually sprawls across seven time zones. I don't know what two of them are called, but Hawaii is two hours behind California and Alaska is 1 hour behind. Pacific is the west coast and Nevada, Mountain is Montana through Arizona/New Mexico (basically the Rocky Mountains), Central is Minnesota/Wisconsin through Texas/Alabama, Eastern is everything from Michigan/Indiana to the Atlantic. Some states are split across two time zones, but that's roughly the breakout. Subtract one hour every time you cross a time zone heading west. I think Indianapolis is the only part of Indiana that doesn't do daylight savings time sitting blue...I guess they just wanted to be difficult :) Renderosity time is Central time, so add one hour for New York, subtract 2 for Los Angeles. I know the UK is 8 hours ahead of me in California, so Greenwich time would be 6 hours ahead of Renderosity time (or 5 ahead of NY as shred already said).

Err... again! Greenwich is in fact in England and on the line of the point 0, but it is not point 0. Point 0 is on the Equator (close to Africa) at point 0 East and West. Time starts there for the whole world. It has the name of "point Greenwich", because from Greenwich came first the idea on how to divide time zones (very long ago). Thanks to all for your explanations. I knew already about time zones (LOL), but what was important to know for me is where in USA is EASTERN TIME, CENTRAL TIME and if you change to summer time. I got an answer on these questions. Thanks again:-) Guitta

Online Now!

You can actually straddle the Greenwich meridian at the Royal Observatory - there's a metal line in the courtyard. The zero is a line of longitude, arbitarily set to go through Greenwich (the French tried pushing for a Paris-centred system, sorry Gebe). The equator is zero degrees of latitude. Daylight saving is also needed because day length (local noon to local noon) is not constant throughout the year, because the earth's orbital velocity varies with its distance from the sun.

Good Evening Guitta, your time . . . 8^) This is for you, or anyone else that might be interested in exact times anywhere in the world at any given time. Go to this site, http://www.isbister.com/products.asp , & download the file called, " Atomic Clock Sync ". It is a totally FREE, no strings attached program that, once installed, allows the user to set the time on your PC to an atomic clock, via internet connection. Also, once installed & you open the program, at the top right corner of the window, there is a clickable link to direct you to a site that will give you the exact present time for almost every city, state & country in the world. I've used it for quite a while now, & it comes in handy for me at times. This would be extremely handy for someone who needs to know the exact time any where in the world, at a given time. I hope this will help you, or anyone else, & you all have a good one . . . Mark. ;^)

LOL, I did not say the opposite, you have not to be sorry for that:-). And yes, I know all that:-). But thanks anyhow. Guitta

Mark, the previous answer was for RHaseltine:-) I know what the different time zones are, that's a classical thing we all know. My problem was only to know where to apply exactly EASTERN TIME and CENTRAL TIME, as we do not use it here in Europe. Thanks again to all for your GREAT help:-) Guitta

Again, thanks to all. I have to explain: I asked this question to stop to write "this challenge will finish at 3:00 a.m. NY time, because I did not know to what city or part of the USA I had to apply Eastern time and Central time. I have go the answers her. As this question got already a solution by the first answer by shreed, and as this thread is not really one in relation to Vue d'Esprit and also for not getting more explanations on time zones, I will lock it here. Please do not mind, but generally I'm the first one to stop other threads when they are going far away from Vue. Big hughs to all who answered. :-)Guitta
