Subject: Gothic Cathedral Modeling

I a mattempting to model a "gothic" style archway for a cathedral. The only way I have figured out to do it is using boolean objects.. ex: subtracting 2 cylinders from a cube to obtain an "arched" ceiling. Is there another way to go about this that someone could explain to me? I have attached a picture of what I am going for...

yes, I too would like to learn more about how to do the intricate scroll-like work for such windows. I've tried starting with Boxes but there must be another way to approch or something I am not seeing?

Reyals ( ) posted Thu, 25 July 2002 at 4:32 PM

if you go to www.caligari.com and click on the Architecture Course there is one sample movie you can view which may give you both some ideas. However I believe it's the next movie that shows the actual construction of the vaulted ceiling. but still this maybe give you some food for thought. Hope that helps some, Steve

Thanks, that does 'open my eyes' a bit, don't have TrueSpace but the consepts are there!

Thanks, the "sample video" was very enlightening! Unfortunatly it ended just as it was about to show the part I REALLY wanted to see!! :-( I hate when that happens! I can't figure out how to get it "skined" from where the video ended...at least not in Cinema 4D. Oh, well...I'll sleep on it, maybe it'll come to me :-) Thanks for your help!

Yeah I'm sorry for teasing you like that. I thought it might be helpful still ... I do have Cinema 4D 5 (the one that was givin out in a magazine.) and here's an idea if you don't like doing the booleans. once you have the "bars, struts" built (like was shown in the video) couldn't you make splines that followed the struts and then Loft them? I haven't used cinema much so this might not even make sense hehehe Steve

Thats alright, it was a good tease! :-) The booleans have actually been working pretty well for me so far. I suppose it is possible to do it with splines and such, but I don't have much experience modeling that way :-( Here is my work in progress though...hope you like it! By the way, what kind of system are you running C4D on?

Reyals ( ) posted Thu, 25 July 2002 at 10:24 PM

Wow I think you've done a great job on that. Well I must admit I don't use C4D very much I also have trueSpace and I use that for most things. I've got a AMD 800 Windows 98 256 Meg RAM. The Cinema 4D SE was from a magazine ... and I played around with it ... but I couldn't get my head around modelling everything with splines and lofting and such. (I'm sure I've just not spent enough time with it) But once again I think you've done a great job going the boolean route

Y-Nott ( ) posted Thu, 25 July 2002 at 10:33 PM

Thanks, I'm glad you like it! I'm still working on it, have a lot left to do!. I'm running C4D 7 on a Mac, (G4 Dual Ghz).. I was hoping you were a Mac user as well...not that I'm holing it against you or anything! I may have been able to help you out though if you were. Thanks again for your help and comments! I'll keep ya posted on my progress!

Here's another approach using Cinema 4D without boolean operations (quick tutorial follows).

Very cool! Thanks! I will definitly try this approach when I get home!

Boy, I'd love to see more threads like this - especially cinema1954's mini-tut. Works exactly the same in my modeler (FormZ) and makes for some interesting food for thought :)
Thanks! Dan

Well...after all the help I got here I ended up putting my "Cathedral" on hold, and ended up creating this! I did my "vaulted ceilings" using a tecnique similar to Cinema 1954's great tutorial. I'll try to put a tutorial together showing the route I took, and post it when I get a chance! Hope you like my new picture!
