Subject: No new undies for Vicki or "How are sales?"

notefinger ( ) posted Sat, 24 August 2002 at 11:19 PM · edited Thu, 06 February 2025 at 4:13 PM

Vickie has to run around in her ratty drawers until my order for Poser 5 comes in. I'm not going to buy anything like Poser clothing, characters or dodads until I see all the dimensions of Poser 5. I want to see what the new characters will look like. I'm holding back buying for awhile. Is any one else of like mind? I wonder if profits are going to be down for Daz and Renderosity for a bit. I imagin that some great products will be coming out for P5

Lots of folks are holding back from what I've seen... mostly to pay for the upgrade. Not too big of a deal, though IMHO. Not everything in the marketplace will become "useless" in Poser 5. Vicky and Mike will still be just as useful in P5 as in P4, according to Kupa hisself, even. There are also a huge amount of things that enhance Poser without needing Poser... Photoshop tubes/brushes for postwork, .obj files, Props, and other stuff for Vue/Rhino/etc that will import just as happily into P5 as it does into P4. I'd mention photography of landscapes and textures, for both backdrops and clothing, but then the thread would degenerate into shameless self-promotion ;) In the meanwhile, if you have the Vickster or Mike, there's no need to stop improving them... they'll still be just as useful in P5, and not everyone is in a hurry to upgrade anyhow. /P

I realy haven't slowed down all that much really. I don't plan to run out and buy 5 the second it is released, I plwan to wait and see what it does to others, and wait for the patches and plugs, then go get it. They (CL) has had me waiting for what seems forever. and now I'm to accept this manna from utah, as if my life depended on it? Not likey. Ya see I really hate hype, and I know when I'm being hyped. sure 5 has tons of stuff i supposedly want. but all I seen and heard is "Soon.Soon" So once they release and then follow on with the this is not the new sliced bread what ya waiting for buy, buy , buy, I'll be the one that gets to say "Soon, Soon."

All I know is that I'm reading the manual, and have already taken steps to "update" many clothing items so I'll be ready to make them completely P5 compatible when I get my grubby little hands on it. ^_^

I've bought one item since Poser 5 was announced: Schlabber's Captured Moments CD. That is because it fits with some projects I have in mind, and is a great deal compared to buying some individual pose sets. I find it hard to justify spending any more money on anything else, since it will be hard to gather the money for Poser 5.

I too have only bought one item, and that was a prop. It just seems pointless until Poser 5 capabilities are revealed, theres a ton of bought and unused items to explore in the meantime. If it is possible to convert clothes as has been stated then there are loads of items worth considering. Ive ordered the upgrade, now Im just waiting for it to arrive. Im very interested to see a few mentions of Victoria V3, how soon though?

I wonder what the release date is for Poser 5 third party products. I can't see any reason why the release date on the new products should be secret. Is it the ship date of P5?, before?, after? I heard some mention of "having to wait", before talking about P5, I understood this before the manual was released, but what's the problem now? I ordered P5 already, but I'm holding up my other purchases till I see what P5 material is coming out. Holding back ads/information on third party material has gotta be hurting sales. I know P4 products can be used in P5, but with limited funds I would rather invest in the new products that show off P5's capabilities. The good news is P5 products (when released)should cause a much needed increase in sales.

If you look at the list of credits for those involved in Poser 5, you can get an idea of the people who are most likely already working on Poser 5 stuff. I'm pretty excited about it myself.

lavlerson - re: Utah... CL is in Santa Cruz, if memory serves. DAZ is in Utah :p Otherwise I agree with you perfectly :) I have P5 on backorder from an academic software house (at $200 US for the full version), but it'll prolly show up in October or so knowing my luck. Therefore, I'm gonna go play with my camera and with Vue 4, which I have yet to really do anything serious with yet. :) /P

Sales for my Dial-A-Tile have been good so far. I will apply my profits toward Poser 5 so I can update it. In fact I already have an update that I'm ready to upload.

Considering how long it has taken me to understand some of the basics of Poser 4, (I still suck at lights, for example), why wait for Poser 5 compatible stuff? My learning curve in some areas is pretty flat, so why not work with what I understand, and slowly fold in P5 toys? I have so many P4 things already that I won't give up, what's a few more? It's not like current stuff won't work in P5, they just won't have a few new, cool features which I've managed to live without for the past few years. And, yes, I'm one of those maniacs who went screaming home on the first day of pre-orders, tore up the house looking for my serial number, and is now hitting the CL page every day to see if there's a ship date announced.

Well, I'm a pretty slow modeller when I'm making things for sale, but I restrict myself to making environments, like my Cyber Studio (a photographic studio), so I reckon that anything I spend a long time doing will at least have a long shelf-life. It doesn't matter how good the figures and the program become. People still need environments to put them in, right? I think the modellers who will be affected by poser 5 are the ones who make clothes, textures and hair. It's inevitable that if you make stuff for model A, then when model B comes out, you have to go back to the drawing-board. If, like me, you make stuff for humans, then you'll be ok until we finally meet another alien intelligence. If I'm still around at that point, then I'll consider making a radical change! But anyway, I doubt if sales are going to plummet for poser 4 products. The vocal minority have already ordered 5 and will dive into it, but there are plenty of people who won't change for a long time. In fact, the only reason I ordered 5 was, I discovered you could run 4 and 5 together and dip into different Runtimes. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't have rushed to get it, since my modelling is based around any old human, and 4 is good enough for that. mac PS LOVE the dial-a-tile!!

I'm not running out to buy anything, not becouse of P5 directly but becouse of all the sales over the past few months. couldn't resist all the deals, now I have just enough in the budget for a $180 Upgrade.

terminusnord ( ) posted Sun, 25 August 2002 at 11:25 PM

I think a lot less stuff will be obsoleted than people might imagine. Wait and see what dynamic cloth can really do in practice before you through out your runtime of conforming clothes. I believe I recall kupa himself saying that conforming clothes would still be a valid choice for all the skin-tight vicky outfits that are so popular around here. Also, most props, scenery, etc.. will still work just the same, without fancy replacements. I'd be willing to bet that the new hair features don't obsolete the hair figures either. The new hair may give great effects in movies (blowing, billowing etc..) but it may not be the best choice for stills. -Adam

Im thinking combos conforming and dynamic clothing combined for more realism and the same with hair, add some strand based to a standard hairstyle and you may well get an unbeatable combo.

Sales have been very slow for me since Poser 5 was nnounced. I assume we'll get back some of this when Poser 5 increases the user base, but short term is- it is hurting. I've got some more updates to crank out, but the only totally new item I'm planning on putting up for sale before P5 comes out will be the sailboat I've been working on the last 100 years. I'd love to make some Poser 5 stuff to be ready when the program surfaces, too, or at least confirm my existing stuff works in it, but I never received the advance copy of P5 that Steve Cooper said I could have. Sort of makes you wonder. ;-)
