Subject: Curious Silence from Curious Labs?

CyberStretch ( ) posted Tue, 03 September 2002 at 8:36 PM · edited Tue, 24 December 2024 at 11:00 AM

As requested, several users have been awaiting responses from CLs' regarding: 1) The Activation Scheme (including International Support) 2) The EULA Agreement 3) Content Paradise CL promised in another thread, which is now locked, that they would be responding to the users' concerns on Tuesday after the long holiday weekend. Other than a few intermittent posts throughout the day, CL has remained curiously silent. I understand with the P5 launch countdown at T-12 days and counting that CL is most likely in the thralls of pre-launch frenzy and hurriedly trying to finish off all related projects, etc, prior to the deadline. So, please do not misconstrue this as suggesting that CLs' has deliberately avoided or neglected to answer these issues. Think of this more as a gentle reminder that some are patiently awaiting an official response regarding issues that have been predominantly hypothetical and speculative up to this point. If users have other issues they would like to address as well, feel free to either post them here or provide links to the threads in order to make it easier for CLs' staff to find and respond as time permits.

I don't think anything is not legitimate I just think that they are deliberately neglecting to mention some things that we won't know about until we lay out our dough.

AprilYSH ( ) posted Tue, 03 September 2002 at 8:55 PM

haven't seen them back down on topics yet, just give them time :) and no-one's holding a gun to your head to lay out your dough farang ;) [or is there? ooer... j/k]

To be fair, I don't think that CL promised a response to our concerns today. Instead, a single employee asked that we hold off until today as the entire CL would understandably be off for the past long weekend- although it was implied that we may have an official response at this time. Still, this is a fairly important issue and I do not think we want a hasty knee jerk response from CL. Nor do I think it fair to hold CL's management hostage to a quick plea from a single employee during the emotional heat of the moment. I for one, am quite willing to wait a reasonable amount of time so that CL may give this matter some serious thought. - Jack

Agree with AprilYSH, no reason to rush them. P5's gonna be a helluva lot of fun. Is it going to be perfect? Of course not! Name one complex application that is! Will it be worth the $$$ and the learning curve for the new features? IMHO, absolutely. There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING they can do that every member of this community will consider "perfect." If you're worried, wait until it's been out for a few weeks. Every plus and minus will be discussed in detail in these forums by then. At that point you can vote with your $$$.

I can see how one would infer that I meant CL management made the promise. However, employees of a company making claims on the company's behalf are representatives of the company as a whole; which was the reason I chose to use the generic "CL" vs naming the individual. It is all a matter of how you read it. And, by no means is anyone holding anyone else "hostage"; well, not yet at least. ;0) At any rate, I think many people are willing to wait whatever time it will take for a response from CL regarding the issues that were presented. As stated, the post is intended as more of a gentle reminder that some issues need to be discussed amidst the flurry of other things that have been going on.

CyberStretch, I sincerely hope that CuriousLabs isn't "in the thralls of pre-launch frenzy". A thrall is a slave, and to be enthralled was NOT a wonderful experience. A thousand years ago, the distinction between captivated or captured was of little importance to the bound man on the auction block. Kupa and Larry do not strike me as the sort of Simon leGreedys who would work their employees half to death and then sell their bony hides on eBay after the product release. Besides, we need the Mac version next. BTW, I suspect that the word you want is "throes" (based upon sound), but English is a rich language, made richer by all the words we have stolen from other languages. Your opening salvo seems combative. Bundling a bunch of concerns together ensures that someone's pet peeve is going to get lost in the crush. In my not humble at all opinion, it would be far better to address each issue unemotionally and separately. There is a decent chance that specific people at CL deal with specific issues, and if directed to look at this thread will scan down it, not see what they are supposed to answer because it was raised in message 38 but two above it were deleted since then, and go back to doing something productive like squashing bugs. If you want attention drawn to a particular issue, and those issues dealt with and solved (or at least an honest attempt in that direction) don't title the thread something derogatory towards a company in general, but raise the issue. "Poser 5 - EULA Concerns!" should attract the attention of the guy who wrote it and the guy who has to defend it. If people restrain themselves to talking about this specific EULA, you might get a clearer understanding of the whys and wherefores. Activation and Security requires its own thread, and maybe two. Content Paradise can probably wait until the product is released. I'm still a SySop on CompuServe. There we have the ability to prune and graft threads, to retitle threads, to move threads, etc.. I don't think the Mods here can do any housekeeping except move stuff out of the way. We shouldn't make it any harder on them by tangling up the conversations from the beginning. Carolly

Carolly, Good response, at least better than what I was going to put up here. I was about to write a very combative response to the first message, but thought twice. I am annoyed how people in this group assume that they have to have everything answered immediately, and if not, they get defensive and start posting speculation, rumor, and veiled insults. CL took a long holiday. They probably got back today to the firestorms in the newsgroups that I am sure Starlet and Anthony noted to the powers-that-be. I am sure they are working behind the scnenes to decide how to address the issues, if at all. As with everything, CL has been a very active member of this community and have been active participants to open dialogues of all sorts. To jump on the cases without giving them time to actually consider the concerns is sad. - Ray (not hiding behind usernames)

I Don't think the powers-that-be give a damn what sh*t storm as appeared over the weekend. They won't change a thing. Thier protection racket will cost them a LOT of sales - Tough... That Scheme of theirs will only stop "casual piracy" True - But consider this: Just how many of you actually know someone who's even heard of poser, let alone knows what it is! Forget schools and colleges - that's where pirates are born! The proffesionals will crack this scheme on a day or two... CL knows this! I'm a 2D artist but occasionally use poser4. I didn't find the first post offensive, but had a good laugh at the title:) It is your response (and the lack of such from CL)that I find disturbing. Steve (Now all you Loyal CL fans can Flame me by name LOL!)

I'll be patient, but I noticed Tori has already posted to some other unrelated topics yesterday without anymore comment on this one. I just hope they don't pretend this didn't happen as some kind of damage control tactic, and that by doing this, not everyone will be aware of this issue. Dodging the issue is not going to silence peoples feelings on this matter, and forcing something on it's customers that a large percentage is against is going cause a lot of damage.

CyberStretch ( ) posted Wed, 04 September 2002 at 7:30 AM

hauk, First, thanks for the edit and the etymological discussion. You can also be a "slave" to your work, which was the intended meaning. Perhaps, since I wrote the post, I do not particularly see the combative content. Does it incite some emotional or reactionary response? Yes, as it was intended to do so. However, that is almost irrelevant since the focus is getting solutions to issues. I grouped all current concerns that I was aware of because, to me, it is far easier to read through a "laundry list" of general issues than to take up space and bandwidth by addressing each topic individually. Since these topics have already been discused, at great length, it would have been quite presumptuous of me to feel that I had the "editorial rights" to sum up the entire community's concerns by creating individual threads. As Nos has already started a thread on Content Paradise, I take it that CL will effectively carve out what they wish to discuss in individual threads. I chose the title specifically to incite some response from CL, since it was clear that the individual who stated that answers were forthcoming made posts without addressing the issues or giving the users any feedback as promised. Call it a nudge or a challenge, depending upon your interpretation, but it did apparently spark the discussion on the Content Paradise, and therefore achieved its purpose. === Ray, Note the timestamp on the post. I did not make the post at 09:00:01 am PST on Tuesday, yet I waited the entire business day to see if there would be any responses; which there were none. In fact, I suspect that the timestamp is in EST, so the post was made at 17:36 (5:36 pm) PST, after the normal close of business. I would hardly classify that as jumping "on the cases without giving them time to actually consider the concerns".

CyberStretch ( ) posted Wed, 04 September 2002 at 7:35 AM

Actually, I noticed when I posted the last message that the timestamp appears to be in CST, not EST. Therefore, the original post would have been made at 6:36pm PST, and not 5:36am as suggested.

I hope they're not in a frenzie! By now the software should be at the publishers to be ready for shipping by the 15th. Any changes or tweeks they're doing now would be part of a download fix. We still get hints on the product, but so far no animal information, no templates for the figures (to see how far off current textures are from the new figures), and no good comparison renders between P4 and P5 (well, a couple), no complex examples of hair or cloth, no tutorials posted by the beta testers. I'm not really complaining (well, maybe). Its just that with a few of these, especially the tutorials, I could prep for when I get the product. Besides, it's cut down on my "shipping anxiety" - grin. I do wonder on how may of us have pre-ordered P5 so far. And has anyone been notified if they've won the extra's for early ordering yet? I'd like to know if I should spring for Mimic. Whew! talk about Shipping Anxiety!

Attached Link: An FAQ about Poser 5 security

We've complied an FAQ that addresses the basic questions about our lock and key system in Poser 5. I appreciate the feedback we've received on this issue. It's helped to distill the concerns down so that a meaningful FAQ could be generated. Sincerely, Steve Cooper Curious Labs

CyberStretch ( ) posted Thu, 05 September 2002 at 10:31 PM

Thanks for your attention to the matter. The FAQ does address many of the points that were raised. One question: Even with Microsoft's activation scheme, I believe they have a default of 120 days (approximately 4 months) after which any "flags" that have been raised due to "excessive" activations is cleared. This allows legitimate users to continue to activate as necessary without having to contact Microsoft directly outside the normal activation process. Since many users upgrade their systems on a regular basis, and many may not transfer their old hard drives, this seems like an amicable compromise for both Microsoft and the user. Would it be possible to institute something similar (even if a longer period) for P5 (and, presumably, above) activations?

ryamka ( ) posted Thu, 05 September 2002 at 11:03 PM

Good, well-written FAQ. I think it addresses most issues here, except for "what happens if CL goes under"? Of course it does not address the "why have it anyways, it does no good". As it is, it is a done deal more or less at this point. I am sure CL will be flexible if reality proves to be more complicated. Looking forward to next week (assuming the rumors of shipping tomorrow are true)... - Ray
