Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Feb 03 12:46 am)

Subject: Horse -- Probably dead -- Probably beaten

Why is it that almost all Vicky characters look alike? I was looking at a product that said they had several different characters. Unfortunately for them, they put a picture of each side-by-side. To me anyway, I couldn't tell the difference as they all used the same texture and hair. Oh well, hopefully things will be a little better with Poser 5 with the face room.

I was looking at some images in the gallery....and yes, all look very much similar. I think there's a lot of that inbreeding going on somewhere :) At least, now with P5, there "should" be much more variety...

They all look alike because the mesh never changes and people don't want to bother learning how to alter it. They see one pretty girl and assume every Vicky has to look exactly like that - as a result, we get legions of these interchangable "characters" whose differences are usually nothing more than slight variations in skin tone. IMHO, a real character package would have not only a texture but a face morph to go with it.

I've been using Poser since V1..and I have never bothered to learn about morphing, or how to make morphs, change morphs, change mesh, etc...I don't have a clue quite frankly. It is a limiting factor in the characters for sure. Anyone know of a tutorial that starts at square one ??? With P5, I think all this will change, if nothing else via the face putty feature, plus the fact we will be able to tweak the face to match images, etc....should be very interesting.

You know, if you select her head, there are tons of dials to tweak with. It doesn't take much to make her look totally different. This face took me about 20 minutes. First, and most importantly, change the face shape a little. The reason Vicki is so recognizable most of the time is because few people change the shape of her head. Add a little ethnicity if you like. Keep it subtle and you can have a whole new woman.

Jcleaver ( ) posted Fri, 06 September 2002 at 11:51 AM

I agree. You can create different looking characters. It's just that most people don't take the time/effort to do so. They change the nose a little and say it is a new character, when actually it is still Vicky but with a nosejob. Headshape seems to be the key though, at far as I can tell. Not many people seem to do this enough.

Well people could say the same thing about posette or Dina too couldn't they? I use about 6 stock head shapes from large cheekboned to anime to round faced, Asian, African American etc. Out of those 6 overall face MTS I can get so many different faces.

When I work with the Dork, almost every dial and half a dozen morphs come into play. And I'm not looking to create fantasy creatures, just interesting people that one might actually see on the street. I posted an image of some of the work elsewhere here in the forum, and it's always cool when people claim that "couldn't possibly be the Dork!" If you're looking to learn how to create morphs, talk to DuaneMoody -- he's without a doubt the resident genius at this. I'd be lost without him, and his Toybox site, although sometimes tough to get to, is worth the effort for all the tools you'll find there.

I hope the product was not Roxanne, JCleaver. She has a lot of small morphs which allow me to cutomize most aspects of her face. I feel she looks very different than the default Victoria in body and face. This image shows some of her variety. Just takes a little time to make Victoria look different. :) Beth

Jcleaver ( ) posted Fri, 06 September 2002 at 12:52 PM

Nope, it wasn't Roxanne. The one I was talking about was completely obvious. They shared everything, same texture, same hair, same expression, same pose. They looked exactly the same. Their may have been differences in the size of the ears or nose, but that is about it. I was just getting tired of seeing too many packages like this that seem to claim that one gets great value. Also, I was noticing that in the face, even 'characters' created by different people looked the same; tho certainly not all.

A non-standard Vicki is what I was going for when I made Luci - I tried to get away from the normal Vicky eye-shape which is quite overlooked when ppl make a new character - I think I did okay - Luci is multi-ethnic looking & when a different 'skin' is put on her, her whole 'look' changes - there are some renders that ppl have used her in & I almost couldn't tell it was her. Her body I didn't want to have be skinny or waifish - I wanted her strong & supple. Anyhoo - this is what she looks like compared to the stock Vicky 2 - both are skinned up with Dalinise's Carly.

Lucy_Fur ( ) posted Fri, 06 September 2002 at 1:56 PM

As for getting a texture & a character together.... Double goodie, I think. A character's look can change with a different skin on it & vice versa. I feel a really well done texture (like those by Blackhearted & Dalinise & Syyd I have tex's from all) is the more valuable of the two. I can create all the characters I want - but I couldn't do a decent texture if my good arm depended on it....G

People (usually) don't even take the time to pose the eyeballs or fingers...so what do you expect...staring and profusely bent knuckles do not make for variety...yeah...most images look Vicki-ish...most ads look Vicki-ish...well...there IS the odd Stephanie now...heh... On the other hand...there are also some REAL awsome renderings that defy all logic and really make a difference!!...in a ways it's good that no everyone can do this or they wouldn't be as noticable...LOL! I think the problem is most folks don't think about the face and hands...they may be in a hurry to just get the image out and look at the body and background thinking...okay...that's cool now...notice how much time is spent on the breasts at times though...my word...perfect huge gazonga's...yet the eyeballs may just STARE...the fingers might look broken...sometimes the neck seems out of wack...maybe cause of those big gazonga's...LOL... ...gets tiring getting all the clothes just right...(if there is clothes)...the hair to not look like bubblegum...the knees to not look like wood splinters...after all that...who wants to dabble with eyeballs and knuckles...who...?? Hey...I didn't start this thread... Cheers!

I often make custom morphs for major characters - but there's no reason why even background characters can't have variety and personality. These were all created in a couple minutes from my P4FemMagic update of Posette and a few clicks on the face and tintMAT files, using SnowSultan's VickyBuster texture. Of course, I think Xprssns make all the difference ;-) Elisa/gryffn

Whatta they mean 'all look alike'? Between Possett, Eve4, Stephanie, and Vicky us men are out numbered 1000-to-1!! (just a few Eve4 faces made from various morphs)
