Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Feb 10 10:34 am)
So, I chose to take the same file name but with jpg extension...and it didn't like it. So, I canceled out. Then exited Poser and tried again (because it turned into the "not responding" program. Tired to load the dragon again...but got the message again, can't load....(see beginning of thread). Like a vicious circle !
I started having the same problems with the dragon after one successful render and went and deleted ALL the .rsr file sin the geometry folder for the Mil Dragon. IN the case of applying the MAT file I converted the jpgs to BUMs in photoshop(BUM files are just .bmps with an emboss filter run on them). If I'm asked for any other files I cancel BEFORE selecting any jpgs.
I can't tell from your screenshots, but do you have Pro Pack? If so, you should be using the MAT Millennium Dragon PP poses, rather than the P4 poses. If you don't have Pro Pack, then you'll have to convert the bump maps to .bum format manually. Relaunch Poser, and apply each of the bump map JPEGs to the ground plane. Poser 4 will convert them to .bum format and write them to your hard drive. Then you should be able to use the P4 MAT poses without difficulty, assuming you don't run out of memory. I hear that the high-resolution maps eat up quite a few system resources. But 1GB under WinXP should be plenty.
I realize BUM files take up a lot of space. But, if my memory isnt TOO bad, it seems like I have pointed to the JPG files before and converted them "on the fly". I won the CD at DragonCon and since there was room on it, seems like DAZ would have made BUM files to go on it. Even then, I've looked at the README txt for the MIL dragon and there are no instructions for converting to BUM files. I realize a lot of peeps out there are experts at this stuff, but what about the newbies who spend that money?
Almost forgot ... Anthony Appleyard has that new utility in Free Stuff that can convert bitmaps to and from .bum format.
You have to convert the Bump map files to Bums or poser cant read them. Bump map files are shipped as normal jpegs because they are so large as BUMs. Delete the RSR again. Load the Dragon. Once you've done that but before you choose a mat file in the Poses open up the Material editor and under the bump map portion click load. One at a time select a jpg file with B at the end. Poser will convert it to a bump map. You have to do all of them (about 10 or so)otherwise you will get the error again. Once your done close the dragon. Load it again. Click the MAT Pose file and everything should work. Hope that helps.
Actually, poser 4 won't convert jpgs to bums when you select them via a MAT pose (at least mine won't). If you select a jpg, it loads just that, a jpg, but will look strange. I don't remember who suggested it, but it has been a good tip for me. When you get a new thing with unconverted bump maps, first, load a sphere (or something with very little geometry) and set it's bump map the old fashioned way (menu->render->materials) If you do that, it will prompt you regarding conversion, which you should accept. Do that for all apparent materials you recently acquired. Good luck! eric

Thanks to all who helped me! Long live R'City (when it's up...hehe) Image above (nothing special). Link to gallery to show credits to all who helped me. Thanks again! (big non-homosexual hug). Now, I can rest.Sharen, you must be a GREAT individual! Everytime I see your name pop up in a thread, it's always positve. I've never seen a cross word from you. I've downloaded a few things from you...your immense collection of freebies, and about every month, drool over that locomotive of yours....since I'm a train buff...hehe. But, just speaking about your demeanor...you must be happily married and a wonderful person to be with. You are a great addition to this community! I apologize for having thought it so MANY times and neglected to say it.
{IInstalled PoserProPack, Install Poser 4 seperately as "Poser4 only" file, convert your JPG's to BUM in "Poser4 only", and move them to PoserProPack. Awkward, but it works.} Philly, there's no need to use bum files in ProPack. PP uses jpg bump maps and bum files will give you very weird results. There's a little trick to keep you rsr's from getting corrupted (something Poser seems to LOVE to do). Once you have a new, uncorrupted one, open properties and set the file type to read only. Then Poser can't corrupt it anymore.
DTHUREGRIE "Philly, there's no need to use bum files in ProPack. PP uses jpg bump maps and bum files will give you very weird results." That's the rumor, but I had problems with ProPack where it would not recognise the "JPEG Bum's", and could not convert the JPEGS to BUM's "because it it didn't need to" It was a catch 22. Why it didn't recognise the JPEG BUm's is beyond me. I'm not the only one with this problem, check around. In any case, the PPP & P4only solved the problem.
Um, Chuck, have you also done that memory fix that CL talks about? I've been having the same problem with bump maps big time, and they corrupt some of my geometry rsr's every time it happened , but then it got bad even when the bump map was already converted. I'm going to do the fix today because I run my Poser off its own firewire drive and this memory prob happens in XP when Poser isn't on the C drive. I haven't tried to render outside the poser window because I can up it fairly high, but I suspect this might be happening because my machine is balking at high-res textures and bumpmaps and I have 2G Ram and 100G free on the Poser drive. I copied the fix just in case, it's hard to link to CL because of the frames Emily 4. Question: Poser can't render high res images. Error appears "Insufficient disk space to render" Answer = After some intense investigation we believe we have a work around. It turns out that Windows NT 4, 2000 and Windows XP must be using some space for the pagefile.sys file on the same partition that Poser is installed, to render large images. The pagefile.sys is the virtual memory or temp space for Windows. An approximate minimum would 10 MB. This amount might have to be increased for more complex scenes and animations. The maximum should be 10 MB or greater. To modify the Virtual Memory: Windows NT 4 = Right Click my computer. Click the performance tab. Click change. Click the drive Poser is installed on. Enter 10 in the Initial size field. Enter 10 or more in the maximum size field. Click set. Click OK. Click OK. Click OK. You may have to restart the System. Windows 2000 = Right click My computer. Select the Advanced tab. Click Performance option. Click Change. Select the drive Poser is installed on. Enter 10 in the Initial size field. Enter 10 or more in the maximum size field. Click set. Click OK. Click OK. Click OK. You may have to restart the System. Windows XP = Click Start. Right Click My Computer in the menu. Select Properties. Select the Advanced tab. Click Settings, next to Performance. Select the advanced tab. Click Change. Select the drive Poser is installed on. Click the Custom size button. Enter 10 in the Initial size field. Enter 10 or more in the maximum size field. Click set. Click OK. Click OK. Click OK. You may have to restart the System. Poser will now be able to render up to its maximum size of 4090 pixels x 4090 pixels @ any resolution
Philywebrider, the problem with ProPack and .bum files is if a MAT pose points to a .bum file, and it is actually a .jpg, then ProPack can't convert the .jpg to a .bum file. If a MAT pose points to a .bum file and it is a .bum file, then no problem. If you have ProPack and your MAT poses make references to .bum files and the bump maps are .jpgs I find it easier to open the MAT poses and find and replace .bum with .jpg in a text editor than use vanilla Poser 4 to convert maps.
Drag the .pz2 to Notepad (it's easiest if you have a shortcut for it on your desktop, then Edit>Replace and type .bum in the "Find what" field and .jpg in the "Replace with" field (the fullstop to start makes sure you don't change the BUMPMAP entry, or files with bum in the name to differnetiate the bump maps).
I use Wordpad as I didn't realise Notepad had a 'find and replace' feature! :) Run notepad, and find your pose folder with the MAT files in. Choose 'All Files' in the 'files of type' box, and open the .pz2 file. Do as RHaseltine says with the Replace dialog box. When it's finished, save it and if you get a .txt extension at the end of the .pz2 you will need to get rid of it. Remove the .txt at the end of the filename to leave it ending in .pz2 and although Windows will worry about changing a file's extension, don't worry about it. Then apply it in Pro-Pack. Have fun :)

Can load any other stuff, but NOT the mil dragon. I work my way to figures, and then the mil dragon, then double-click the top RSR pic to load it. (enter hourglass) Then, message about not being able to open the mildragon.obj. Click OK and another message about the same thing in the geometry folder for the mil dragon. Then a message about not enough memory. So, I reloaded the thing. Same error. Rebooted. Same error. Clicked on Poser Help to see how to increase memory. That doesn't do anything. It just sits there. Read book on allocating more memory. Only reference is to Mac. Dragon LE won't load, either. Any other figure I load works. Just no dragons. Running XP (home) on Dell 2.4 with 1 GB RAM. Seems like it would be enough. So, it seems I should be talking to DAZ, or CL, but thought I'd see if anyone here had any suggestions. Tks for any assistance or suggestions.
