Subject: One of my first P5 renders...

or an attempt at least ;-) I am not bitchin' or complainin'...merely stating fact... I have installed P5 on 4 different systems. The most stable so far is a pIII 700 with 512M ram and Win2k. It is still locking up just about every other firefly render as you can see from my pic. The install on the PIII was a clean one with no other programs on the c drive. From what I have discovered on my AMD cpu systems there is a hidden easter egg in the program. If you hit cancel while rendering it not only cancels your render but cancels your Poser 5 session as well via a system lockup ;-) Although this only happens 8 out of every 10 times it is still good to know. To those who have had a wonderful experience with P5 so far, Goddess bless you, I wish I could be in your elite group.

Only 8 crashes out of 10 times...those are good odds... =( I am using an AMD chip and alot of people seem to be having troubles with them and P5. I just hope my experience goes better than others have.

Looks like you switched rooms in the middle of a render? Try staying in the Pose room until the render is finished :-)

galactron22 ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 2:11 PM

Well This Just goes to prove what my Mama always said....." Son never buy a the first version of a new application "....or was it some thing about chickens and hatching....? well any way I'll wait until poser 5.03 or something like that.

Ask me a question, and I'll give you an answer.

Jackson ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 2:11 PM

Well it's painfully obvious, sir, that you are inexperienced and don't know what you're doing.

VAIRESH ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 2:29 PM

Heya Jeff...sorry did not change the room in mid render. About half way thru the render this is what P5 coughed on to the screen. It was a hard lockup of 2k...I have seen very few programs hard lock 2k in this way. Heya Jackson chuckle you are absolutely right. I am pulling all my Microsoft and other certifications off my office wall and using them as page markers in my P5 book ;-) I have already signed up for courses this Autumn to be certified in "Getting P5 to work on AMD cpu systems". It takes 7 tests to get this certification and the course work includes over 10,000 pages of text chuckle Is SR1 out yet ;-)

Looks like you switched rooms in the middle of a render? >Try staying in the Pose room until the render is >finished :-) This also happens when you switch to another app while rendering or calculating a cloth sim. Not switching is a work-around, but they need to fix this. I've also had this happen while not switching, btw. I'm using an AMD XP 1700, so they may have an issue with amd.

Me thinks people click things to fast and dont read manuals before they do. Also, would you like to see that same look in LightWave, Max or Maya? It will take me two seconds to do. Any takers? Ron

Heya Jeff...sorry did not change the room in mid render. About half way thru the render this is what P5 coughed on to the screen. It was a hard lockup of 2k...I have seen very few programs hard lock 2k in this way.<<< I have had the same thing in WinXP... often. I guess we're just two inexperienced whining bastards, Vairesh. We should wait for those who have more technical know-how and who are positive it is just our inexperience and system difficiencies. After all, some of them have figured that out without ever having used the damn thing! Now THAT is brilliance! I should proof this but I'm too damn tired. I've been sitting here since 4:30am this morning trying to figure out why this graphics program from Hell is doing what it is doing. And you know, it has locked up so many times that I've spent most of my time watching the computer reboot... well, that and dreaming back to that day when the registration went sooooo smoothly. casamerica

I'm running P5 on Win.M.E., 1.7 gig athlon w/768mg ddr ram. Have rendered with all setting on high, hair, hi res figure etc., with no problems. Exported to Carrara this Don figure and it worked fine. Must be something other Amd, P5 must require massive ram, maybe that's it.

Here is the one second Lightwave crash. How I did this is simple and many of you may have this problem. I activated my Firewall. Also if you know how to use your firewall you may be able to set it right. I can mine. I can do the one second crash with any program I own. If you have a top end app and are renderding do not click another button. You want to see what max or maya does? Ron

Cromwell1 ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 3:40 PM

Hey ronmolina, that Lightwave problem is easily fixed. The problem is that @$&%*& hub that is installed on 6.0 + versions. I was getting the same thing until I found on Newteks website forums how to change the setting in one of the .ini files to disable it permanently. I have no more crashes with firewalls now. If I can find that again I will post it since I cannot remember which one it is. =P

JeffH ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 3:55 PM

Well, that's the Material Room. Maybe you clicked the tab by mistake.

I didn't really mean to make light of your troubles.

I never touch anything in Poser while it's rendering to avoid memory lock-ups just like that.

Marque ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 4:02 PM

It's in the book, the way to disable the hub. Hated that thing. Marque

jarm ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 4:08 PM

I think we're missing a vital piece of computing genius here, Patrick_210 has got something working in Windows ME!!!!!!! I have never seen anything work in that wonderfully buried and seldom mentioned member of the Windows family, you've made my day Patrick :-) AMD system sitting waiting for P% and a full system back-up ready just in case :-)

VAIRESH ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 4:13 PM

Ahh shucks....I'm not mad, just really, really frustrated. Ron, I am not getting this error due to a firewall ;-) P5 is on a 2k system with no other program loaded and no network connection or ethernet card. I did not try to move or click anything, honest, I was in the kitchen making a sandwich and came back to the frozen computer. Yes I know P5 is not the only buggy program out there...but still I want to create, be artistic, expand my horizons with P5 and it just is not letting me.......SIGH !

Cromwell1 ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 4:15 PM

Found it: this is froma a post there by one of the Newteck guys: If you don't have TCP/IP, you can always disable the hub (which is what initializes TCP/IP) by editing the shortcut for Layout and Modeler in your Start Menu, and place a -0 after the .exe in the Target line for the shortcut. So the target line would read something like: "C:Lightwave 3D 7.0ProgramsLightwav.exe -0" OK sorry, back to the subject. =)

Cromwell and Margue I know. I made it happen on purpose. LOL! They dont call me crash Molina for nothing. Lets try and solve Vaireshs problem. Sounds like it should not happen. Is TCP/IP installed? Ron

ronmolina ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 4:59 PM

Ohh! One other thing LW is my favorite 3d app. I can crash Max and Maya in a nano. Ron

shadowcat ( ) posted Fri, 13 September 2002 at 12:03 AM

Is this content paradise related? TCP/IP implies networking & modems to me. If this were disabled would it make P5 faster & more stable? Can it be disabled? All I have to work with is an Intel celeron 256mb win 98 2nd ed. POS, or my daughter's pentium 1 32mb (suitable for a 6-yr old) So I am understandably hesitant to rush out & spend $179 on P5, not knowing how reliable it will be (if it will run at all)
