Subject: **** NOTICE **** geep's "Scale" prop sizes are NOT CORRECT!!!

First, my sincerest apologies to all concerned.

The size of my "Scale" props is NOT correct! And here is why...

A little history ...

I first generated my (original) 12 foot Scale prop about 2 1/2 years ago because I had a need to create Poser props that were accurately scaled in real world units (i.e., feet and inches).

At that time, as some of you may already know, there were no real world scale units in Poser, only "Poser" units (whatever they were). There never has been ............ until ............ Poser 5.

Now, it would appear that I have a massive amount of egg on my face because whoever (and I am NOT pointing any fingers) created the Poser unit of measure did not use the same multiplier (or divider) that I did to correlate Poser units to real world units of linear measure.

The bottom line is that ...... it appears that I am wrong ..... and I will have to redo all my Scale props to conform to Poser5's units of measure. And, I WILL do that!

A long story short, discard (delete, throw out, can, destroy, decimate, cancel, don't use, etc., etc., etc.) any and all of the "Scale" props that I may have sent you.

I will begin again and use Poser 5's units and then repackage the whole thing for distribution.

(but it didn't take very long to burn down, did it!)

Well, back to ye ol' (electronic) drawing board.

CL should have adapted their new version of Poser to the universally accepted Dr. Geep scale. I'm shocked and dismayed about the oversight. ;) Phoenix

Dr Geep- Well, I could wait for you to do them or just make them myself. After hours of work I still wouldn't have them finished. And mine wouldn't be scaled right either. Well, if you put a gun to my head, I guess I can wait. So yes I'm still interested. Definitely. John

I have re-done the props using P5's "scale" ... - but - (see pic) What can I say????????????????? cheers(?), dr geep <-------------------- feelin' pretty stupid ;=[

Jeez, sure now we can scale all the props to real world units, but if we do, they are going to look fairly stupid in this world of giants. The CL scale is stupid. Long live the Dr. Geep universal scale. (Meaning maybe sticking with your old props beats their idea of real world measurements) Phoenix

Mike's about 6'6.5" tall. Pft! They added real-world measurements, and then made them useless. Phoenix

I saved "Don" as an .obj from P5 and then imported him back into P4. He measures just under 6' tall. See pic above. I also opened a P4 scene with a "standard" 7' doorway and P4 people (male & female). Then I loaded "Don" from the "Figs" library and he appeared to be just under 6' tall (using my old scale prop. See next pic. It would appear that there is a scaling problem with the "real world" units in P5. To be continued ...

the "real world" units shown are for the "box" (the white square in the right of the doorway). It indicates that the bottom of the "box" is 72" (6') above the floor. What do you think? cheers, dr geep ;=]

Dr Geep don't be offended but you're wrong about the box, it's not the bottom of the box that's 72' above the floor, I have a feeling it's the centre or the origin of the box that's at 72', this is MVVHO ;) Rob

Try it, you'll like it. ;=] Pssssst, I'm not offended. It takes alot more than that to offend me. ;=]

squash the box flat on the Y axis see if that makes a difference or have you tried that already?

All props are referenced to their "origin." The box's origin is 0,0,0. Reducing the yScale to zero would not change the origin. It would still be ... ... you guessed it ....... 0,0,0!

true but why isn't the bottom of the box at 72' when it says it should be? if you make it's y scale 0 then move the box to 72' does it sit exactly at 72' or is it still off? damn I wish I had poser5 so I could try it out myself :(

Why not make it a double-sided square (so it will be visible from above and below), rotate it on the x axis 90 degrees, and then whether the Y trans is measured from the pivot or one edge won't matter. That's what I tried for measuring Mike. Phoenix

... whatever Lola wants ................... It's not really 72" from the floor, though. I took a tape measure from my floor to the bottom of the box on my monitor and it was only 48.236". Now I'm REALLY confused. Does anyone have any use for an old ... Nevermind, I guess I'll just go back to simpler times, you know, like Poser1. I never had problems like this with good ol' Poser1. Now lets see, where did I put that program? Oh yeah, it was on the casette player I had hooked up to my Atari800. Now, where did I put that Atari800 ... cheers, dr geep ;=]

*** I have done a new post of this but I wanted to include it here so that anyone following this can more easily find it. *** The new post is as follows: ************************************************** I think I know what has caused the problem. In Poser 4 and previous versions, there were no "RWU" (real world units) defined. The absolute "scale" just kind of "floated" and everyone did their best to scale figures and props to the size they thought look correct with no way to accurately measure anything. I don't remember how I originally came up with the conversion factor of 0.126* = 1 foot but that's what it was. Something I worked out using RayDream Studio (which uses feet and inches) and Poser. *Pnu (Poser native units - from Poser5) If you use 0.126 Pnu = 1 foot, the whole world is happy, ................ at least, I am. And, everything created (with any kind of scale in mind) prior to P5 appeared to work fine using this scale. In Poser5, 1 foot appears to equal 0.116 Pnu. Oops! I thought it was 0.126! Do we have a typo there? This is what creates the discrepancy between my scales and P5. 0.116 0.126 Hmm? Typo? I don't know. I believe what I am going to do is continue to use my original "scale" and ignore P5's "real world" numbers. I have already re-worked all my scale props to "fit" Poser5 but I'm not going to use them and I will not distribute them. Looks like we're going to have a schism here. Pre5 vs Post5 as far as scale is concerned. What do you think? cheers, dr geep ;=]
