Oh, ironies of ironies, I was looking for another poser-liek program on the net, an dit made me appreciat eposer all the ven it is flawed and slowed, and convoluted... and, well basic, betaware. I stumbled on this monstrocity called GroBot. GroBot is not a posing program (its an interator like Bohinut's Jenna) but it has teh most byzantine interface its been my displeasure to see. The pick below is not a joke but title screen. The idea of "setting contaption" If its joke its not mine - man, I seriously hope this is some bad joke. Mommie make the bad programmer stop!! Actually, it looks like a pretty cool program. The renders in the galery look almost like Fractal meshes...if there is such a thing

CyberStretch ( ) posted Sun, 22 September 2002 at 8:25 PM

Would be fun to try, if I had a MAC. ;0)

canary3d ( ) posted Sun, 22 September 2002 at 8:28 PM

Aardvark, if you're interested in fractal meshes you should have a look at xenodream... www.xenodream.com And I agree that it looks like an interesting program...although I can see being put off by the interface.

Thanks for the link. I e-mailed them to see if I could try it out before buying it. I didn't see any demos or anything. I'm not about to plop down $70 for a program based on a few images.

ringbearer ( ) posted Sun, 22 September 2002 at 9:17 PM

There was a demo for the software on the Renderosity Magazine Issue 2 CD. Unfortunately, it's only for the MAC. Arleen

Sorry about that, I mean unfortunately for me, not trying to disparage MAC's, but the software looks pretty cool. Arleen

Hay, I have that! Too bad I don't have a MAC :(

canary3d ( ) posted Sun, 22 September 2002 at 10:26 PM

I'm also reluctant to buy without a demo, but I probably will eventually. To see some pics that use xenodream stuff in bryce, check out skydancer's site at www.skydancers.com here's a link to an image that uses xenodream stuff. I think she's a beta tester for them so she may be using functionality that's not available yet but I know the height map export works happily with bryce. http://www.skydancers.com/2artpages/2001/12december/juggernaut.html There's more xenodream scattered around in her galleries. While you're there, check out her "copperworld" section if you're into bryce. Some very cool stuff there. Mary

Looks like a really cool program! Thanks for the link!!! Any interface can be learned with a little imput from the user. When someone cant get past the interface thats whats called 'Operator Headspace".:)

wgreenlee1 ( ) posted Sun, 22 September 2002 at 11:08 PM

Darn!!!! Only for the Mac!:( Hey wolfie man let me borrow one of your macs dude. At least I got to down load the PDF and read that.

davidgibson ( ) posted Mon, 23 September 2002 at 6:37 AM

This is a demo I just downloaded a 30 day/life copy of the program from their web page. The download link is in the picture at the top of the page and is hard to see(smallll print).

Phantast ( ) posted Mon, 23 September 2002 at 7:42 AM

The point is not just in how it looks but how efficient it is to use after a reasonable amount of learning.

A nice little app - written as a teaching aid for older kids. I found the "video game" physics simulator really interesting. It's programmed in SuperCard which can hardly be considered a programing app and has a lot to do with it's UI. Link above is to a Groboto/Bryce image.

VirtualSite ( ) posted Mon, 23 September 2002 at 9:32 AM

"Download" is fairly hard to miss. And the program is listed as 39.00, not 70.00. (They say that price was only good till April, but if you proceed with an order, the price holds.) It looks fascinating. The gallery images were pretty spectacular, and the system requirements appear minimal at best. For a "kids' program", this looks like it could have a lot of real-world uses, particularly since the generated meshes can be exported in a format compatable with Bryce or RayDream, which suggests they would be compatable with Poser as well. Insofar as the interface, unless I missed it, there wasn't a screen shot showing one. The image at the top here is the splash page.

CyberStretch ( ) posted Mon, 23 September 2002 at 10:21 AM

VS, I believe that the last four pictures are representative of the interface, starting with the one right below the picture shown in the original post.

VirtualSite ( ) posted Mon, 23 September 2002 at 11:05 AM

Blond moment. :) But what a cool interface. For something designed for sheer fun, this can't be beat -- put all the pieces out there and just go to town. I'm sold.

Hiram ( ) posted Mon, 23 September 2002 at 11:56 AM

Only for Mac? I can certainly sympathize, I hate it when a cool piece of software comes out for only one platform and it's not mine. However, since I do happen to work on a Mac, I'm gonna go have a look.

JDexter ( ) posted Mon, 23 September 2002 at 1:30 PM

Well I just had to get Xenodream. So far the program is fun to work with. I can't wait till you can export .obj, but right now the possibilities are wonderful. I find it interesting that some of the features are similar to Posers (ie the memory dots, the lighting ball) Definitly a lot of fun. That other program looks good too, too bad I have no Mac. i played with it ...and its pretty fun.....exporting to Obj. takes awhile...depending on how complicated it is which it usually is ......but ...its really easy to use and fun too!!!....it would be great to use with poser or bryce or both for that matter.... nnuu

Looks fascinating to me... the interface is reminiscint of the Caligari style in TrueSpace interfaces. [Not neccessarily a plus, but hey - I like TrueSpace] I don't own a Mac, but I'm seriously thinking about getting a copy of Groboto as an XMass gift for a friends kid who does use a Mac, and is interested in 3D and games. The kid also uses the mac version of bryce pretty well, so she might enjoy it for exporting. Btw: "To see some pics that use xenodream stuff in bryce, check out skydancer's site at www.skydancers.com" Has Xenodream gotten an exporter? That's what I've been holding off on before ordering it... You may be correct that she's got some beta functions that haven't been released yet. If so... hopefully that means the next version with obj export is on it's way.

You can export a pgm file from Xenodream, which you can import into Bryce. You should check out smithgiant's gallery, he has some impressive Xenodream images.

It looks something like a 3D tinkertoy set :-)

Why shouldn't speech be free? Very little of it is worth anything.
