Subject: How to De-kink Poser 5 hair???

Well, Hair experts.... I have tried every dial, all kink things set to zero... every combination I can think of and what I get is kinky-doo around the scull cap.

I'm trying for a smooth, silky loose-flowing hair. It gets that way farther away from the scull cap, but a big wad of kinks on top of the head... (check the image here).

Any thoughts on how to set this up so the kinks go away?

Thanks. Kink strength set to lowest along with all other kink settings. Still doing it.

Looks like you are using hair dynamics instead of styling the hair.

I was justy going to say the same thing...

It looks to me like you have 2 hair groups and you're only turning the dials on one of them. Make sure you don't have another group in there. after all your settings on all the groups are how you want them, press "grow guide hairs" again to remove the effects of styling etc. I've gotten straight hair with just the dials so I know it's possible! If it keeps happening, can you post a pic with "show populated" turned off so I can see what the guide hairs are doing? Mary

You have "Do Collisions" Checked. This feature always produces this kind of result. I spent 2 or 3 days trying ever combination of dials. That's what it does. If you want flowy hair you have to turn Colloisions and dynamics off and just pose every strand, one at a time. http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=871696

Thanks for all the input.

Later I will post the image with populate turned off and a screen shot of the dial setups.

I didn't think the dynamics/collisions and the styling controls were exclusive.

My intent is to build hair that generally is styled as I need it, save it as a prop, and use it in either animations or other poses. (I realize I will need to run the calculations for each use, but the feel and flow should be the same just work with the motion of the figure.)

So is it an either-or situation?
Pose with dynamic calculations... OR, pose with styling? If so, that is pretty strange, I think.

thanks again for the help.

Nerd... I looked over your animation "Fried Hair".... seems you were encountering some problems. I haven't figured it all out, but I did manage a small test animation... the hair is fried, but it seems to do the collide thing ok... slides over the shoulders instead of passing through them... check the URL below to see my experiment.... Also, if you go to styling controls, choose a group of hairs...move the tip/root slider all the way right...and pull the hairs, kind of stroke them...they will straighten out...you can then push or pull them in the desired direction

Nate, The dynamics are not totally exclusive, Position force dial sets how much influence your style has on dynamics. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to keep hair that is touching something from frying. Yeah, I aws able to get similar results. the cillosions do keep most of the hairs from passing through objects. But the side effect of a 50,000 volt shock is not very helpful. I just got a message back from CL's tech department. It looks like this is going to be accepted as a bug. Hopefully we'll see this fixed in a patch in the near future. My guess as to what is happening is that the collision engine for the hair is detecting a collision and causing the colliding vertex(s) to rebound, This sends a wave down the strand causing the next vertex to collide and rebound. This is creating a feed back pattern in the hair. This was probably supposed to make the hair "bouncy" but it came out fried instead.

This morning I posted a follow up to this as a new message... guess I should have posted it here... anyway, it has this title: "How to De-kink Poser 5 hair?? - - Part 2" I posted the image with show populated turned off as Mary Canary requested - if this doesn't work, I suppose I can repost the whole thing here.... thanks for the kind help, Nate.
