Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 29 7:57 am)
The 3do explorer for Windows users will make RSR files so that macs could convert and use them. However both pro pack and P5 use only pngs.. That's why the large number of them. Though with this complaint in mind I will try and make sure to convert/make rsrs for anything I give away. Though I'm sure if/when the MAC version of P5 comes along it'll toss the rsr out the door as well. Tom
The .png extension files are a PC poser pro-pack convention, replacing the rsr. I try to include both .png's and .rsr's on new stuff I'm doing, but I'm afraid that I never updated my older downloads. They have rsr's only. [Not a propack user for most things] Ummm... I'm not sure on this, not on a mac either, but is there a version of P3d0 Explorer [from freestuf] that's Mac compatible? If so, it will convert all the pngs to rsrs in a folder, or vice versa - rsr to png. Handy utility, but I don't know if it's PC only.

I think the point was that if people are constructing their models in Propack and P5, and as these two versions don't create RSR's, makers will have to take steps to create the RSR's with a seperate utility for P4 users. I'm not sure it's such a problem for individual items but I can imagine it would be a pain for a large pose (or MATpose) set!
Thumbnailer is the answer for us Mac folks, at least for now. Another good us for it making pretty rendered thumbs for your own files. Just render the image, do any postwork you want to to it, reduce it in size to 91 x 91, save as a jpg, give the same name as the file (.i.e mypose.pz2 and mypose.jpg) you want to make it the thumb for and then stick them both in the same folder and drag and drop the folder on the Thumbnailer icon, Voila! If you want to share them with PC users just use the "Export to PC" function in MAcCOnverter and it will create the .rsr files.

Noggin, what I meant was that in a MAT pose for Pro Pack on the line below any call for texture there is an extra line that isn't in the regular Poser 4 Mat files. It looks like this: textureMap ":Bodyshirt-Blue1-KTS.jpg" 0 0 bumpMap NO_MAP reflectionMap ":Bodyshirt-Blue1-KTS.jpg" 0 0 For some odd reason, without the line that reads "0 0" the MAT file won't work in Pro Pack but will work just fine in Poser 4.03. Simple thing, but oh what a difference it makes. Weird, ain't it? :) Kate
Phantast: "But surely both Propack and P5 can READ .rsrs? So if everyone defaults to using .rsr than everyone will be OK." True, except for one gotcha. The first time Pro-Pack finds the .rsr thumbnail, it creates a .png thumbnail, and from that point on, it never looks at the .rsr file again. Normally, this is fine. But if you ship a product, then later have an update that changes the thumbnails, Pro-Pack users won't see the updates. That's why we ship both .rsr and .png thumbnails. ( And we have needed to update thumbnails...we had some floor textures where the thumbnails showed the whole floor, and they were too small to see the pattern. In the update, we zoomed in on the pattern.) Many vendors may never have the need to update thumbnails, so just shipping .rsr files will work fine with them. Since we have needed to in the past, we always ship both formats. (By the way, you could actually get by with just shipping .rsr files, and then shipping both when you do the first update.) (By the way, a similar problem exists with Poser 4 (non Pro-Pack) and geometry .rsr files. The first time Poser 4 uses a .obj file, it creates a geometry .rsr file, and doesn't look at the .obj file any more. To update a product's .obj files, you also have to ship geometry .rsr files, or the non Pro-Pack users won't see the updates.) Rawnrr: You can't just rename the .rsr files. The format is quite different. Actually, the .rsr files are the same as the Mac PICT (.pct) files, with a header and trailer slapped on the front and back. Lynn Grant Castle Development Group
Ah. It's the other way around Kate... Pro-Pack will convert the rsrs, but P4 won't convert a png, so I like to include and rsr as well - that way the non PPP users can use it without having to run it through P3d0 like I end up having to do on some PPP items. ;] I discovered recently that the "0 0" line is also helpful after the reflectionMap lines on some Mats.

"Thumbnailer is the answer for us Mac folks, at least for now. Another good us for it making pretty rendered thumbs for your own files." I got it and I love it. The ability to make my own customized thumbnails for my freebies (and upcoming MP products)was just a huge added plus. Thanks for the help folks!
I think it might have been a better idea if CL had just stuck with .rsr thumbnails. Is there really a significant advantage to using .png to outweigh the hassle it causes? Incidentally, who was the bright guy who decided to call both the thumbnail files and the processed object files ".rsr"? I would think you would get kicked out of computer school for that sort thing.
Bear, darlin', you need more coffee or new eyeglasses - one of the two - cuz you must have missed the very last line of that paragraph. G >>As long as there is at LEAST and RSR everything will work fine for PP folks.<< Can I get an "oops?" Kate (who is wondering how she let that "and" slip past when she meant "an")

Okay, I'm a Mac user, I admit it. I genuinely appreciate every single freebie that someone has the generosity to offer, but I'm having a problem here. There seems to be a growing trend to include .png files with downloads instead of rsrs. Now, I don't know if it's more convenient for PC folk or what, but pngs don't convert over with Maconverter the way rsrs do. So what I end up with is a whole library full of shrugging grey guys. I just downloaded a 20 pose set that I have no way of knowing whether I can use them or not. Sure I can load each one and save it over the original but what a royal PITA to have to do with everything you download. Is there a simple way to deal with this?
