Straight P4PP render, no postwork. Still needs tweaking.

Drat, I can't remember his name! Ziggy Stardust? You know, Major Tom to ground control? Oh jeeze, what's his name? Damn!

Haha, David Bowie - in his "Aladdin Sane" guise.

That looks great, First thing I thought of when looking at it was "Ziggy Stardust!... wicked." I think his cheeks should be a little more shallow/hollow. I don't remember him having even that much meat on his cheeks back then. Tom

Absolutely immediately recognizable. The cheekbones need to be slightly more prominent, or maybe it's that the cheeks should be a little more sunken in. Also maybe a slight taper applied to the head to make the forehead wider. I think the eyeshadow for that make-up is a little more pink and the red of the lightning bolt a little more orangish. Still, it's definitely not mistakable for anyone else. ;) Perhaps a slight 'sheen' to the make-up to give the look of grease-paint, and a regular skin bump under it all would make it almost perfect! Good work!

Thanks for the replies, people. You're right about the sunken cheeks, although he wasn't a full-blown (or is that snorted?) cokehead at that time, so he wasn't as corpse-like as he became in 1976. I'll try the taper suggestion, too. As for the colours, well I have 3 or 4 different versions of the artwork and they're all slightly different, so I'm going for a middle ground with those. Good point about the grease paint, though; I'll play with lighting tomorrow and see what I can come up with.

Beautiful! The cheekbones should be more pronounced, but I think much of the effect people are remembering was due to the make-up. The upper edge of the cheek color is more sharp.

Thanks for all your comments and advice, you've all been very helpful. Here's the latest version - I don't think I can get it much closer than this now. I added a bump map, altered the colors slightly, tapered and rescaled the head (and made him a touch thinner), played with the lighting and so forth.

The lips could be lowered a bit more... and the bottom lip should be a bit thicker. But outstanding work!

actually i think if you stretched the head to say maybe about 110% on the y axis..it would be closer to the picture and eliminate the moving of the lips..maybe

wolfshade ( ) posted Fri, 18 October 2002 at 1:06 PM

oh duh...and i forgot...the nostrils seem a bit wide...if you can maybe thing those out a bit it would damn near perfect...and raise up that philitrum....sorry...i'm just a perfectionist...lol but, great work :D

Try arching the eyebrows-- keep them low-- and rounding the eyes just a bit. You've done a great job. I'm a Bowie fanatic and this is really recognizable now. Still looks too healthy, have no idea what to do about that.:)) Well, yeah, I do, don't be afraid to paint in the painfully veined neck tendons and a good--well, bad-- bump map would thin that skin. Gotta take it from healthy Utah to too many ciggies paper thin English skin. Nothing works as well as a splotchy brush-- you're doing this with multiple layers, right? Emily

Right, thanks once again, everyone. I'll work on the reshaping and tweak the bump map. I'll post another version later. :)
