Subject: Anyone using Poser with a gig of ram?

Hi. Am thinking about upgrading from 512 to 1 gig of ram. Have a P4 and XP. My MB will accept SDRAM or DDR. So is DDR that much quicker or would SDRAM be fast enough at 1 gig? Also to anyone having a gig of ram is there a lot of speed improvement? I also realize other factors matter like the speed of the harddrive etc. Thanks

SDRAM only goes up to 133MHz bus speed. DDR can handle 266-533MHz bus speed. Which do you think is faster? :) 1 to 2GB of DDR RAM will solve most ills, especially 3D graphics ones in Poser. Yes, there is a definite increase in performance with more memory and especially if you can switch from SDRAM to DDR. Although it's not cheap! 1GB will cost you about $300. It would also behoove you to verify that your harddrives are 7200 RPM (or better) and not 5400 RPM, as this will effect both your file loads and virtual memory swapping speed. i use poser 4 and have a gig of ddr ram and its sweet.....depending on what your budget is......i know there is a difference when it comes to speed with the ddr and sdram but honestly ddr offers about a 20 % speed increase..... but really.....if it takes only 4 seconds to do some sort of operation with ddr .....it will take 5 seconds with the sdram ...... so if you really need that extra 1 sec then get the ddr if not then get the sdram.....what is fast in computer terms is not really much of a difference in human terms if you really want to visualize it......having a gig of ram wether it be ddr or sdram is still powerful nnuu

I upgraded from 756Mb to 1 Gig, under Poser 4 I noticed almost no speed differance. Under Poser 5 I use all of the 1Gig, and could mabey use a tad bit more. Will you be upgrading to Poser 5 before you buy a new CPU?

I am currently running a P4, 2.25ghz with 1 gig of DDR RAM under WinXP home. In fact, it is currently a crime scene animation in Poser 4 (Since Poser 5 chokes and pukes on it everytime). I can't tell you if the difference in render speed is so much the additional RAM on this system or the processor, but until loading Poser 5 I had not EVER had a lockup or crash on this system. It ran Poser 4, Cinema 4d, Vue d'Esprit and TrueSpace with no problems and at a speed that is, well... delightful. We won't go into the Poser 5 issue. If you can afford it, get the additional DDR. You won't regret it. Take care and be well. casamerica

I upgraded to 1 gig sdram-- from 383. Suddenly I wasn't crashing anymore. And I had 30 g of scratch disk. My new machine-- for Graphics only-- has 2G-- it's a Dell, I think it's sdram. Poser 4 is on it's own firewire drive, it's slow to start because I'm a pig and have bought nearly everything. But relatively fast renders, did one last night with Echidna, Melusine, TransPond's Poseidon, tons of other props, ton of lights-- 12 minutes to bring up the Pz3 file but under 5 minutes to render. I can work easily with my display on full texture, too which is optimum. I simply couldn't afford the ddram-- it would have added another thousand when I was upgrading-- and Fryes didn't have enough anyway. Dell didn't offer it. I haven't regretted it. I am a little dissappointed with the slower firewire, but with infinite ability to add storage that won't crash if my puter does, I'll get over it. Emily

I'm using a gig of ram. It's not as fast as other programs with that ammount of memory.

I have a new TriStar computer, I have DDR 1gig of Ram, It's great.(not on internet) This Gateway Cow has 511 Ram and Poser 4 use to crash a few times every day. Not once has it crashed since I got my new computer. I took Poser 5 off, untill they fix all the problems with that program.

1 gig of DDR and XP home here. 10,000 rpm SCSI drive, too. :)

I recently upgraded from 512 meg of SDR to 1 Gig of DDR. It's a huge improvement and I wish I'd done it ages ago. I can do scenes with much more in them and I can handle multiple high res textures with ease instead of crashing after loading a single one.

Hmmm... every once in a while I find a really great thread. I'm planning on getting a new machine sometime late this year, and here I find everything I need. My future machine (so far). P4 - as high a speed as I can get. 2 gig DDR Ram 2 high speed 100 gig drives (1 just for Poser and my other art programs) Now, can someone give me the winning lottery numbers so I can afford this?

3-4-8-10-11-16-27 That's for the Centauri "Great Maker's Lucky Seven" lottery. You'll have to hurry, though. The rift in the space-time continuum is beginning to heal itself. Take care and be well. casamerica

Whichever route you go, save yourself some sanity, go with quality ram. When I first popped up to a gig one year ago, I went with uber-generic ram. I noticed a huge difference when it came to poser, but the system was much more unstable. Depending on your price range, I would suggest DDR ram, and go with either Corsair, Micron, or Mushkin ram. Theyre a little more pricey, but the performance is worth it. On a budget? Try Corsair value ram. Just as stable as the rest, but without the ram heat spreader (and the modules arent necessarily from the same batch). The sticks run anywhere form $100 to $175 (look around, deals can be found if searched for). Last but not least, you may want to consult your boards manual to see what your system can (and cant) handle. No sense in paying extra for the high-speed memory if your board doesnt support it (unless you want to take advantage of the higher speeds on a later update). Good luck! ~DM
