well, I'll have a webserver up and running with a couple of gigs of space in a couple of hours. then set up the ftp server... though I would rather use ssh. I have tested this machine as server and it is reasonably fast. for files under 5 megs I can quickly set up basic html linked pages. but no hotlinking, that leaves the machine open to what happened to penguinisto.
I'm in the process of doing the same. Have a webserver up (Apache), an FTP server, 15GB space, and a 768Kb T1. Anybody interested? Jaqui, are you going to manually set up HTML links to files? I'm trying to do this automatically. Is that what you mean by "hotlinking"? Though, I would only allow login/password access to the FTP server with a usage policy for security reasons. I don't want what happened to Penguinisto happening as well. Kuroyume0161

hotlinking is when a file can be directly accessed through a different website / server. I would ( for speed sake only ) just be manually adding html links to the pages. set up more elegant solution after people have thier downloads working again. definately a login for ftp not just anonymous. no uploads for anonymous access only downloads.
Gotcha. Well, I have a friend who's going to help set up a perl script to dynamically create pages with the links to files and prev/next, etc. He says it's easy (for him :). But I'm still game for anyone interested in using my server. I was considering this prior to Penguinisto's unfortunate demise and this just makes me want to get it up for everybody ASAP. 768Kb/sec = 90KB/sec upload and download. I'm also thinking about swapping my current drive for a 120GB or 80GB WD w/8MB cache (if necessary). That should be plenty of space (well, for Poser users, maybe ;). Contact me here! Kuroyume0161

See the new messages at the end of the thread at this link. Thanks for your offers!! It would be useful if Penguinisto's stuff could be bulk transferred to its new home with its directory structure as it is; it would save a lot of people a lot of time and phone bill over slow dialup links. How much space per user, and how long for?
Penguinisto told me that some group of officials called UEN took his hard drives and all backups. Penguinisto asked UEN that all non-warezed data be kept intact, but when they march in and demand both hard drives and backups, there isn't much that can be done. So we don't know when (or if?) he will get his data back. See the end of the thread at the above link.

See the thread at this link. It seems that Penguinisto's server, which provided space for many Renderosity members' freestuff, has had to be taken down permanently. Please where can the affected people (including me) find more space, preferably quickly? I have 20 megabytes of space on http://www.demon.net/ , which is a paid service but that has been full for a long time, and they refuse to provide more space even though I offered to pay more for it. I live in England. I had about 16 megabytes of files on Penguinisto's site.
