Well guys, I have built us a temporary web page. There's not much to it right now. We have two vacancies for assistant web masters. See the site for more details. I'll be adding a forum and chat by mid-week. http://www.geocities.com/mumblebox/movie/

Oh, of course. I am a writer, too. But the first step is to brainstorm, the writing team narrows those ideas down, and then you'll have a small team of no more than two or three writing the movie. Actually, I hope to do the majority of the writing, but for the initial stages, it doesn't hurt. I agree with you that a comitte would be tireseome and NOTHING would get done. Right now we just want to get our feet wet.

Im not a writer, but I am creative and not very insistent. Ill join if youll have me. Tempest

I have little real talent but I'm good at gruntwork.. =) I know HTML, I can model somewhat, I'm learning morphing, and I'm willing to help. =) Rosh (Just wants his name in the credits...) =)

I,m new to the site and have to say this is the most intriging idea Ive seen in a long, long time. Somebody, somewhere will tackle the logistics of making a movie over the internet and logic suggests the only way foreward would be an Cg animated movie. From what I,ve seen so far of the talent & spirit of co-operation displayed on the site,it may as well be you guys.Whether it turns out to be a Mega hit or an odd curiosity you will still be staking out your place in movie history. I work in the U.K.doing Cg post production for a video company(After Effects & Premier only I,m afraid no Flame here yet) but would be glad to get involved. Contrary to the writers Ego,s raising there little heads already, you CAN begin by writing by commitee. What is needed at the early stage is not the Overall Concept of the "Ive ot an idea bigger than the X-Men,Lord of the Rings,Star Wars"approach(Everyone has one of those I,m afraid) but to begin suggesting short, very carefully thought out polished little gems of scenes. These are known in the trade as "unsubmersables"and it is suprisingly easy to adapt such memorable moments to the needs of the final story as most stories have scenes such as Hero Trapped,Hero Escapes,Confrontation with Villian,Etc. Well thats my two "Penneth" worth as we Brits say.I,m now girding my loins in preperation for the writers onslaught.

P.S. Might I suggest a working title of "Mumbles Grail" seeing as you have started the quest.(and Mumblebox,s Grail is just a bit on the awkward side.)

Sounds like it could be fun. I don't know what I can do but I'm willing to help,if I can. I'll keep an eye on the site and see if there is anything I can contribute.

My first thought was "Sheesh - what an organizational nightmare - especially with a group of often-sensitive artist-volunteers." But then one of you mentioned something about the press attention this might generate. One must admit that this is correct. A feature film produced by a group of strangers who have (mostly?) never met would attract huge media attention in the Entertainment, Technology as well as Business press - much more so than if a major studio or small indy group produced the same product. This leads to the conclusion that anything other than a lame piece of crap would instantly become a hot property. I'm associated with a film lab that may be helpful on the backend -transfer/print/duplicate & distribution. We're game! Just a thought but perhaps you writer-types might consider something with a seasonal/holiday twist. Granted, perhaps not as much fun as semi-naked-chain-mail-bikini-clad-space-warriors but also not as much hassle with traditional/cross-cultural story lines and, if you do get something with characters such as Thorne's cute holiday elves -- that does catch on -- it could run world-wide for 30 years! (Consider that Frosty/Burel Ives stop-motion-animation thing)

we simply would need someone to coordinate the whole project -Ede

I'm still kind of new at Poser animation, but I handle myself pretty well editing multiple motion and sound clips in Premiere, as well as doing special animated effects like morphing one object into another, lightning, explosions, sound effects, etc. If you need an FX animation composition/editing department, count me in.

mumblebox ( ) posted Sat, 15 April 2000 at 6:37 PM

Well, the coordination is underway. I have now got a site, some webmasters, and a few ideas of some neato little scenes. I've also got Jack K's support in that we'll have out own forum soon. Stay tuned.

It looks like there's interest in this, and that's a great start. I have experience as an independent filmmaker (live action, though) and have done some Poser and Bryce animations. I also have post-prodiction capabilities with Final Cut Pro, Commotion DV, etc... I'd be happy to lend a hand. Some suggestions: This kind of collaboration has been done before. Check out Planetary Traveler and Infinity's Child. These were produced/coordinated by Jan Nickman and produced entirely on desktop computers by artists whose primary communication was the internet. Check it out at www.thirdplanet-inc.com I might suggest that, given the collaborative nature of this kind of project, it should have a loose narrative. It will be extremely difficult to coordinate animators at a distance if the plot dictates style to the nth degree... If you haven't seen Planetary Traveler, check it out to see how this one works. It's not to say you can't have more of a narrative then PT, but it shouldn't be too tight. I might also suggest publicising this early on at other high-profile 3d forums. There is a lot of talent out there, best to make use of the best you can get. That's NOT to say there isn't talent HERE, just that this isn't an excluinve club. Someone might also want to get in touch with notables like Nickman, Wenger, Stahlberg, Murphy... see if their interest can be captured. -sk

The Linux project shows that a huge complex project can be done by people spread out around the globe. They had and still have a very good organization structure. Even if a movie is a completely different project than an operating system, it can be divided into different tasks as well. /Ohman

ScottK ( ) posted Sun, 16 April 2000 at 9:48 AM

I agree... this can be done. But it's a bit simplistic to compare this kind of endeavor to the Linux project. A film with a strong narrative has to have a VERY consistent "look" - i.e. camera style, lighting style, movement... etc... If the look isn't consistent, it will be evident that there were too many "cooks for this stew." The idea is to have many cooks, but have a pleasant entree when all is said and done. No matter the strength of the plot, it will be imperative to have detailed storyboards before any rendering is done. It should all be very interesting. -sk
