Subject: Another group with stolen images

I'm posting this in the Poser forum because of the higher traffic.

I found another graphics group with images on their site. I recognized LisaB's (already IM'ed her) but there are many there that others might recognize so hopefully this post can stay where the artists can see it and do something about it.

I don't have AOL or I'd join the group and see if they're still active. Maybe someone else who has AOL can do that and see what else they're passing around.

I have a suggestion though. The last incident had people emailing nasty threats to the list owner. This is not the way to go about it especially if you have not been stolen from.
I suggest a kinder approach and since Lisa's image was likely stolen from here, perhaps a Renderosity Admin can email them as well. If someone "official" can toss some stern words to them and AOL, perhaps they'll listen.

Sent a message to AOL TOS to check into it.

Kendra? What do you mean by stolen images? I am lost.

Kendra ( ) posted Tue, 10 December 2002 at 2:38 PM

It means they right-click or screen capture images on other people's websites and chop them up, put frames around them or make them into Paint Shop Pro Tubes or PhotoImpact Stamps. This particular site is another email group where they share images they've taken from the internet. They happen to have a website and have some of the images posted. Lisa's I recognized right away and sure enough, when I clicked on it there was her signature.

Since I'm sitting at my computer this morning printing my Christmas cards, I've nothing else to do but surf and I've already joined another graphic list and bookmarked a couple of sites that look suspicious.

Since Lisa's image was for sale here as a digital art print an Admin should email as well.

You mean they sell others art? Is that legal? I might be misunderstanding. I have paintshop pro, I use it for lighting and for using some plugins. Sounds very complicated. Sorry for asking dumb questions, I just have been reading everything I can in the forum for hints on doing poser better.

kBran, whenever you create an image it is under your copyright from creation until 50 years after your death. People like these taggars and such are basically stealing from you when they take your images. Some of us make money selling our art. Online and in the real world. You can legally use images that are in the public domain, meaning that they say you can do whatever you want with the image but the images in the gallery here and other community 3d sites and on websites are not all in the public domain. Some people do not accept or believe that so they use pieces and whole images. This is wrong. And illegal. Using PSP for lighting and plugins is fine. but what these people do is cut out say your figure from your image and distribute or sell it as a tube, or background or whatever. THey don't create the art they take it.

I would not bother emailing..This is the reply I got from a person at the group.....I wrote a very nice letter to this same group before I saw this post explaining that they must seek artists permission to display or pass around art work...I was called a greedy slimy art agent (I dont charge my artists for any promotion I do do by the way..) Just thought u might like to see the reaction..he claims they give promotion to all you artists but there is no real link to the actuall artist unless u recogise their artwork like LisaB ****************** hi Im responding to your email about the art community I am an artist and I know first habds slimey "AGENTS" l;ike you are the reason for the decline in the art community.......these poeople make no money off of the Art club they are in they do it to give free promotion to any of the art community I have a friend in washington Im going to speak to about this (being ex military intelligence has its benifits) I dont appreciate you going around to art groups and telling them what to do unless the pictures specifically say they are not to be saved and redistributed on the web seeing most of them are found off the web then without a copyright niotice....youre aguements void and being I look at many art sites on the web and Id have to say 75% of them do not have that notice.....and last time I checked copyright infringements can only be declared unless the said party is making some kind of profit from the infringement free distribution last time I checked was not making money so I suggest before you go poking your nosae around in other peoples business you get your facts strait and stop being an internet nazi...... thats just my opinion I could be wrong

ookami ( ) posted Tue, 10 December 2002 at 4:00 PM

Umm... sure, the 12-year-old kid who responded in bad english is an ex-military intelligence officer... one who can't use punctuation, spelling, grammar or appropriate capitalization. Unless of course, he took some shrapnel to the brain in the name of his country....

just to let you all know. AOL or someone pulled the group

[just to let you all know. AOL or someone pulled the group ] Good job, folks!!!

atthisstage ( ) posted Tue, 10 December 2002 at 4:21 PM

After sending a note to AOL's TOS and copying the guy who owns the page, I got a note from the group's owner -- real apologetic for the trouble, sorry for the problems he caused. He voluntarily pulled the group. Nice to know there are still some good people who can see their mistake and take responsiblity to fix it.

Kendra ( ) posted Tue, 10 December 2002 at 4:47 PM

Oh good job guys. Compliance with no bloodshed. That's what we want to see. :)

Glad to hear it..not sure who the artist was who sent me the email, maybe a member of the group.I recived his snotty one about 10 mins after I received a polite one from the owner of the group, well I think it was the owner, saying she/he would pull it..so its good to know some do realise their mistakes

FyreSpiryt ( ) posted Tue, 10 December 2002 at 5:01 PM

It's sad that people like the snotty responder there have to give everyone a bad name. I'm quite certain that most people in these groups do not realize that they're doing anything wrong and will respond appologetically if politely asked not to. The average person is understandably confused about copyright, and there are so many misconceptions, such as the ideas that it's not infringement if no money is made or that it isn't copyrighted unless there's a notice. If approached calmly and politely, I find that most of them meant no harm and will try to make things right. As for the snot, I'd love for him to consult with his "friend in Washington". His friend in Washington would inform him that HE'S the one in the wrong.

gulfmystery ( ) posted Tue, 10 December 2002 at 5:09 PM

hahahahaha the ones in the wrong always pull out a government official or even a president/prime minister "FRIEND" from their pocket..listened to lines like that many times haha

atthisstage ( ) posted Tue, 10 December 2002 at 6:40 PM

I loved the line being ex military intelligence has its benifits. Given that "military intelligence" is a questionable phrase in the first place, it's clear it didn't give him the "benifit" of being able to spell worth a damn.

whbos ( ) posted Tue, 10 December 2002 at 7:47 PM

We always said in the Army that Army Intelligence (or Military Intelligence) are two words that don't belong together because it doesn't exist.

good job, guys. i did the themes for several tagger lists, long ago, when i just worked for self. oops...still work for self...don't have time for lists. these folks use "tubes" of other's work...composite them, send 'em around and call them art. and the program, and filter, swapping...let's not go there.

Valandar ( ) posted Wed, 11 December 2002 at 12:51 AM

Gulf: Having read that note, your "Artist" cannot be Military Intelligence. I was USMC Manual Morse intercept Signals Intelligence for 5 years, and everyone in my unit at least had the common sense to know how to spell, punctuate, and use proper grammar. And whbos, I'll agree with you when it comes to the officers. Enlisted men do a darn fine job of gethering the info, but the officers usually screw up with it somehow - delaying the transfer until it's too late, misinterpreting (ignoring the suggestions of enlisted in the proccess), and so on. ^^ That, and Army intelligence is generally considered by the rest of MI to be the least effective. ^^

Remember, kids! Napalm is Nature's Toothpaste!

"being ex military intelligence has its benifits" LOL. I hope the ability to spell is one of them.
