So.. no improvements to look forward to. Thanks for the warning, Joey301.
hborre, I'm running Poser 8 with Win7. Last night I uninstalled the program and reinstalled it. I loaded it in the "Poser directory" (3rd option, I think). It all looks the same though. [Local Disk (C:) > Program Files(x86) > Smith Micro > Poser 8]. I expected the libraries to appear different (original) but they don't. There's probably something there to prevent the user from losing downloads.
I found a little info about managing libraries in Practical Poser 6. I'll work with that next. Any additional info you have is appreciated. This stuff sounds so simple when others talk about it. If programming expertise is required to pull this off I'm in trouble.
Thanks everybody.

Here's one problem example:
I added Easy Shader to the downloads
[Poser 8>Downloads>runtime>libraries>materials].
In Poser under Materials downloads I find easy_shader3 with the different shades listed (cream, liquid, milk, etc), but each of these files is empty. What happened?

Thanks. My other problem is finding stuff that I add to the library. I can go back and see them in the Windows files, but they don't show up in the Poser libraries. Skin shaders would be in materials, yes?

Carodan's research? Are there some instructions here somewhere? I am definitely interested in details!

Great. I have a dark figure with white hair. Kinda need the density. Thank you for that info, though.
Still, there are some really nice styles being created that do not appear to be painted on. What kind of software has the capability of doing that sort of thing?

Thank you! I think I had mirror toggle on when I tried to delete it before.
New problem: there are several fragments of the unwanted boot left that I cannot select to delete.
For most of the leftovers, spinning the camera in different angles solved the problem. If I select the desired boot, it recognizes these fragments also, but I cannot select them by themselves to get rid of them. Any ideas?

There are some helpful tutorials on YouTube for Poser. I've been floundering with Poser also. I like the program, but finding useful info for it isn't easy. If you can, pick up the tutorial on Renderosity by fugazi1968 called 'Poser from Beginner to Advanced'. It's expensive, but it's on sale right now until March 15. It's easy to follow and covers everything well.
fugazi1969 also has great tuts for Silo 2.4 if you're looking for a good modelling program. Silo is not free, but it's lower on the price scale, and one of the most "user-friendly" in my opinion. YouTube has some good base-level tuts for this program as well. I can finally say that I'm enjoying modeling now with this program, and it works well with Poser.

I thank you all "muchly". Hopefully I will come to understand this stuff enough to be of help to someone else someday!

I will need a lot more practice before I will actually enjoy it! At this point it is a personal challenge that I refuse to give up on. Your help has made my challenge much easier.

I'll second fly028's recommendation for Fugazi1968. I have his Digital Tailor and Digital Cobbler tutorials and they are very helpful. I find that most tutorials assume that you already know all about the program (which, if I did, I wouldn't be searching tutorials would I?), but these start you out pretty much at square one.
If you try Silo and like it, there are tuts on YouTube called Glen's Silo Fundamentals that really do start at square one - probably the only tuts I've ever found of that kind!
[And yes, there is an unfortunate number of broken links on that site.]

Thank you! I think we're OK now.
Overall, Silo has been the most user-friendly modelling program I've tried (which has included most of the freebies and many of the lower-priced programs). It has lots of great new-user tutorials, as well. Still, I stumble over the simple things... Thanks again!

Very helpful. Thank you.
It would be nice to see the Poser figures used more in tutorials and merchandise. Even Poser stuff seems to use V4 and M4. Poser now has two new models, but they are for Poser 9 and above, like V5 and M5. It will be interesting to see how they compare...
