Volfin,
You mean www.debevec.org, not "debvec", right?
Your comment about HDR is interesting. I could be wrong, but I don't think it matters in the least that these are not HDR probes.
In fact I'll go this far. I'm going to get heretical here and claim that, with respect to the use of light probes in Poser 6, HDR won't make any improvement whatsoever.
Here are my reasons.
First, Poser can only use a light probe for its calculation of diffuse illumination. That means this is not involved in refraction through dark glass or other tricky situations. It doesn't even use it for specular reflections, which is just plain silly, since it could pretty much use the same algorithm it uses for diffuse, i.e. perform a convolution on the probe and use the surface normal to select a value from the convolution.
Second, diffuse illumination INHERENTLY DISCARDS the detail and range found in an HDR image. Basically, for it to work correctly, it must calculate a "cosine-weighted integral of the corresponding hemisphere of incident illumination." For the math challenged in the room, that means "it must blur the heck out of the probe image first." This destroys a lot of detail, meaning that a low-resolution, LDR probe and a high-res HDR probe end up looking pretty much the same in 99% of situations.
Third, we have no control of the diffuse convolution function used. Which means that the same diffusion angle profile is used for all materials, which is just plain silly. Poser is doing rather inappropriate math on the lighting, so it makes little difference that the input to the lighting algorithm is lacking some detail.
So - we have crappy algorithms, little control on a per-material basis, and only use the probe for diffuse illumination, forcing the addition of other lights to create specular reflections and strong shadows.
Then, on top of all that, the AO algorithms in poser SUCK. It doesn't do the right thing at all. You can see it in how the AO shadows are so grainy and quite often come out the wrong strength at different scales. For example, its very common to get strong AO shadows around the bridge of the nose but give no shadow on the floor under the figure.
I'm just trying to figure out what we CAN do with it, because making truly photo-realistic images isn't going to happen with Poser 6. :-)

The image was actually made for another scene. So it is not "accurate" because it doesn't reflect the actual surroundings of this scene. But it doesn't really matter that much. It produces a believable indoor lighting. I'm now experimenting with making more custom light probes. (The red corners are the result of a red object behind the mirror ball in the scene I used to make the probe. Poser doesn't look in the corners so it doesn't matter.)
Anyway, set up an IBL light with this image plugged into the Light Color. Set the Light Color to WHITE. I used intensity 37% - any values around 35% to 55% work well. Set IBL COntrast to 1. On this light, enable Ambient Occlusion. I used a strength of .25 and left the Scene AO Options at the default values.
Set up a second light to bring out highlights. It can be infinite or spot. In this image it was a spot light with depth map shadows. Do not turn on AO for this light. Intensity was 44%. Angle start/end was 0/130. Distance Start/End was 0/0. XYZ Rotate was -45/38/-12. XYZ Translation was 10/14/10.
Play around with the values. Do fast renders with no raytracing to get the desired light levels right. Then turn on raytracing to enable the AO function. Unless you want reflections in the scene, you can set the raytrace bounces to 0 for faster rendering.
I know there are better setups, as face_off has shown. But since you asked, I tell :)
Now I'll "pose" another teaser - do you want a mini-tutorial on how to use a mirror ball to render your own custom light probes in poser?

Well, I'm not sure I'd call mine "really well executed", but here is one I did the other day. (Warning Nudity) I wasn't intending to do a good "art" pic, per se, but rather playing with IBL and AO with an attempt at indoor realism using only a minimal lighting setup. If you want to know more, I can post the light settings and the probe I made myself.Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. Poser 5 doesn't seem to have that script but Poser 6 does. Which version are you using? I assume its 6. From the main menu choose Window/Python Scripts. In the Python Scripts window click "Utility Funcs" Then click "Delete all lights". It will ask you to confirm before doing it. If you don't have it, put this in a file and run it: import poser for l in poser.Scene().Lights(): l.Delete()

I'm sorry for being pedantic and certainly hope no one takes offense, but ... The singular form of the word vertices is "vertex", not "vertice". I have a genetic defect that grinds my mental gears to a halt when I see "vertice". Even worse, when someone says ver-ta-see out loud. :) Strangely, dictionary.com lists "vertexes" as an alternate spelling plural for vertex. I didn't know that till today.

I recently made a prop of a framed painting with a nice rounded frame entirely out of a single poser one-sided square. Here is a piece of it showing in a scene I'm working on.

By the way - I see a lot of poser renderings that look like this too - white bloom with yellow fringe. Its because the lights are on too high. As I've said before, after you like your lights - turn them all down 10% one more time. Works wonders.

Of course I have no proof but that photo you posted is, in my opinion, NOT an unmodified photograph. It has obvious photoshopping clues. Somebody was messing around to get a more scary effect.
Look carefully at the RIGHT side of her skin, just along the hairline. See how its red there too? That can't be SSS.
The overall tone (blooming white, to yellow, to red) is a pattern I see in lots of badly edited photos. Its a common artifact of letting the software try to enhance contrast without a human judging the result.
As evidence, I am posting another photo image. The one on the left is, I think, realistic. I made the one on the right by doing a single contrast adjustment in photoshop. Does the coloring there look familiar now?

"light falls off into shadow a bit too quickly" Exactly!! That's why I posted on Friday how to stop that. Use the clay node (alone or with the diffuse node) to control the light fall-off rate as the surface turns away. Follow the link to see how I used it. You would also notice the shading problem less if you used a more even lighting arrangement. I use an IBL that I made myself that gives strong side and back light so I can just concentrate on the fill light. I usually only need one. I see a pink "spots" node, right? That is great for producing nice believable imperfections. That's a key one for closeup. I'm not sure I buy into the ambient occlusion as done in Poser. There is no doubt it is needed, but every time I use it it dirties the skin and always is too aggressive, no matter what I set it to. Look carefully at the sides of her nostrils. Nobody ever looks like that in normal light. Or check how much darker it got around the top of the ears. Look at pictures of, especially your own pictures instead of magazine ones - you'll never see that much shadowing on a face except in contrived lighting situations.Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. I looked inside and it mentions the V3 textures twice. Wierd.
In the future, how about I put in a simple color node and label it "PUT YOUR TEXTURE HERE"? Would that be good?
I wish renderosity had something better than the freestuff area. I'd like to see a place where we could post materials+lights+props, etc and you could put the screen shots, explanations, and actual files all together nicely. Then we could compare notes much more easily.
Oh well - here ya go. After downloading just rename and remove the ".txt" part and replace with ".mt5".

Folks, I'm not at my Poser PC on weekends so I can't post the mat. But be aware some of the things that look black aren't black and some that look white aren't white. A few are pink and a few are really dark gray. Why don't they show the RGB values in the UI so we can exchange screenshots of nodes easily??????!? The color_math in the file in post # 31 above, for example, seems to be set to black on the second channel. If you leave it like that, you won't get any of the frontal pinking. I'll post an update on Monday with all the colors. Glad you find this interesting. I didn't know the a material file was just ASCII text. I'd have uploaded before instead of using screenshots. Can I just do Attach File for any post? If so I'll put materials up from now on. I thought the forum Attached file was only for pictures. If I can post materials and light sets, that would be great. I find people trying out my materials don't get what I do because the lights they use are very different.

By the way, the render in this link is the most impressive example of realistic lighting and atmosphere I've ever seen. This was done *** 5 years ago *** in POV-Ray. I'm pretty sure that Poser/Firefly can't touch it.Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. Oh Face_off - forgot to tell you. In this picture, my back light was getting shadow from one figure to another. So I cheated and turned it to no shadows so I could get the Blinn highlight on all four figures. Of course with her left hand over her thigh, it shouldn't glow like that, nor would it if I had the shadows turned on for it. Also, I really wasn't working closely with Jessi. Her texture sucks, as we've both pointed out before. I just threw her in to show the improvement, while never promising that the result for Jessi was acceptable. However, I think V3 is looking more believable. Still not photo realistic. But the improvement over the original is clear, right? Personally, I don't think that Firefly *** can *** render photorealistically. I've played with POV-Ray a lot in the past and radiosity has IBL and AO beat hands down. I've done a couple renders of poser scenes in pov - the workflow is a pain. I'm trying to find ways to make Firefly generate believable images. After all, it is a lot faster to try out ideas with Poser/Firefly alone. Plus I like the challenge. One of these days I may take these figures into POV-Ray, work out all the tedious conversions of textures, and let the thing chug away for 8 to 10 hours. I bet the results would, indeed, be nearly photographic.
