Thread: C6 Standard? | Forum: Carrara
Hmm, I wasn't far off about the 90% or more of the sneak peaks being in C6 Std. Im very glad my top 3 sneak peaks made it into the Std version too,...plus one; the graph editor? ...nice! I have uninstalled 2 other 3d apps to make room.
Thread: C6 Standard? | Forum: Carrara
Their holding back the Standard version so their servers don't meltdown, Im guessing, lol(Pro files are larger?). So maybe by next week, C5std to->C6 std users should get some news. As for what features are in C6 std, I think(another guess) 90% or more of the past sneak peeks will be in there. Im looking forward to the OpenGL speed.

Im not sure about the license,... you can't use the PE version for commercial work after 30 days?,... only the SE version for $100(approx usd), which I thought was weird because its a mouse. I checked, and it doesn't look like you can program buttons for specific applications like Bryce either(correct if wrong). It would be nice to navigate around a 3D app like that. I almost bought one too.
Thread: Do I need a better video card? | Forum: Carrara
Also try the "Interactive Renderer Settings", my system seems to respond MUCH better with OpenGL wireframes(smooth).

to add to above:.. oops,
**
quote:** "Try zooming in to a scene and pan around, then from a distance. If the slowdown occurs at a distance alot more then up close, then a video upgrade would help more...",
... that can work backwards with textures and OpenGL views sometimes and is more in line with geometry at a distance slowdowns etc.
So basically where there is more to be seen(lighting, textures, number of objects etc), sometimes up close, sometimes at a distance, the more your video card will have to work(I always run out of edit time, lol). A faster video card will help a great deal. Sorry for the confusion.
Thread: Do I need a better video card? | Forum: Carrara
Upgrading video will always help OpenGL viewing one way or another. You may want to check system ram usage/CPU usage, at the point you see slowdowns, just in case the video is ok, but the system is slowing somewhere else.
The amount of ram on that card should be fine unless textures are extreme(multi-layer etc.). Try zooming in to a scene and pan around, then from a distance. If the slowdown occurs at a distance alot more then up close, then a video upgrade would help more, but it also depends on the overall system speeds(bottlenecks) and scene complexity. Hope this helps.
Thread: Rendering creates big hat small head. | Forum: Carrara
According to what I see, even existing .AVIs that come with my Carrara don't play in my Media player(I have Vista HB 64bit). It says the codec isn't supported or something.
I would suspect that this should be an easy codec fix by C6, or Vista hotfixes and service packs. There are a couple of newer Vista updates that mention AVI stuff, if you want to run your OS update(my Vista comp is not an online one, its a dedicated system and Im waiting for service pack).
I don't have Poser, Im still new at this, but others may be able to answer export question.
Thread: Upgrade versus Free Upgrade | Forum: Carrara
I haven't seen/found what the offer will be for existing C5 users to upgrade, but I will be watching that closely, as some day there will be an upgrade from C6 to C7/C8 etc. and that will be a "selling point" for me to upgrade it then.
The consensus for C5 existing users upgrading to C6, is that it will be a nice upgrade price. I can't see it being much more than the introductory sale price has now, or their DL servers would overload with current users trying for the sales, lol. Im just guessing though.

Yep, just had a discussion on Polyloop forums. Carrara hates .AVI for Vista systems that I read on Google searches, and it just won't work(unknown error on 2nd/3rd frame animations). The other standard BMP/GIF/JPG sequences etc. should work fine though, plus a few other formats/codecs from the net(Im still learning info about them).
Vista has a few updates to go before its works 100% with alot of things. Carrara may get a fix in C6 I hope. AVI works for most other 3dcg programs though, so its not all Vistas fault.
Thread: Why Bryce | Forum: Carrara
Ah the good ol days of 4k ram, and cassettes, lol.
Is it just me, or would anyone else recommend Bryce as "*THE" *starter 3d app? Bryce got me to where I am now in 3dcg, mostly because of the "eye candy factor"(like the Sphere Over Water, ...SOW) and ease of use. Although Iv'e moved on to Carrara 6(when it gets here), I won't forget the SOW pictures and instant landscaping.
Thread: Why Bryce | Forum: Carrara
I use Bryce like a plug-in for other apps now(like Carrara), when I need a simple landscape export(Bryce has a nice terrain editor), or quick scene setups using mountains or primitives etc. Bryce is still powerful for what it is though, but like above post said, I use it alot less.
Thread: C6 Dynamic Hair | Forum: Carrara
My last 3d app gave about a 12% increase in render speed overall for 64bit over 32bit. Dynamic hair and fur look like it will need all the speed it can get. I just got C5 std, so I hope C6 has 64bit too(I don't see any info for 64bit in C6, but it would be nice to use the extra ram addressing it offers ).
Thread: Slightly OT: OS, and which would you choose? | Forum: Bryce
I just went with Vista Home Basic. I don't need all the unneeded(Im being nice here, lol) apps the larger versions have. Then I just tweaked Vista back to XP usefullness. Even looks and acts like XP, only the new icons give it away. Glad MS left it so we can turn off functions still.
Thread: Slightly OT: OS, and which would you choose? | Forum: Bryce
Vista is just as fast as XP for 3dcg(not counting video drivers yet), and don't forget XP had just as many, if not more, problems when it came out. The underlying code in Vista is far better than XP. If you want DX10, and 64-bit for the future, Vista will be the one you want. If you plan on doing 3dcg for a living or serious hobby, 64-bit will allow much more flexibility(ram too). XP has most of its issues worked out, thats why so many won't switch yet. Could always try Vista out and see if you like it, if not, stick with XP until Vista is more mature.
