Worse than that, my friends. I was doing, what else, a search of images on Google and the same thing happened: images were not displaying, nada. But, other sites were unaffected (hopped over to WebCrawler and things were dandy). Looks to be a backbone problem and may have been caused by a d.o.s. attack or something at a major hub going screwy. This was several hours ago, so it may have been spreading before being fixed. Really, it'd be nice to place an Asian body skin texture onto my Asian character instead of hairy-European Don's texture. Looks like some mutant... Kuroyume.

Thread: P5 Hair - what a tangled mess ;) | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
JeffH: That's a very good suggestion. Will look for info on wig making and similar. I tried making three hair groups: front, middle, back. The results were much better than one big hair group and now my hair is more manageable and soft with no split ends. ;) Kuroyume

Yeah, what PabloS said. :) I was definitely dropped repeated times. Maybe the words "Spalding" were on my infant t-shirt; I don't remember. And I hadn't even had a chance to start mastering Poser4 when my current application project was started (10+ hour days, 6 or 7 days/week for the past three months). Now this behemoth (Poser 5) stands before me, beckoning me with its new powers and alluring features. I must hand it to the artists who have provided such brilliant material already. How do dey do dat!? BTW, please point me to any Poser 5 "tutorials" posted here as I have just started collecting them for reference. I'll be on the look out, but there are a couple months of posts to search as well! Kuroyume

Yes, it does doesn't it? My system is a dual PIII 1GHz and has 1.3GB memory and I'm still experiencing slow downs over 2500 hairs. I wish that the ATI Radeon 7500 (or my GeForce4) could be put into action to speed things up, but I still like the results :) Kuroyume

Thread: Athalon + P5 = Mess? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
We'll have to get a concensus. CPU, memory, OS will need to be given by repliers to see if this is an AMD-related issue. I haven't had any problems on my dual-Intel system yet, but haven't played with P5 yet since installing (web site creation in progress). I also have an Athlon XP 1700 machine onto which may or may not be installed P5, depending on how CL and its EULA feel about it. ;) If it is within my rights to install it there, I will and see if these problem exist on that machine. Jackson: Curious Labs had Poser since its creation? I thought that it was started by MetaCreations and then transferred to Curious Labs when MetaCreations' ship sank. See here for some info: http://maccentral.macworld.com/news/0004/13.poser.shtml And YOU ran ZBrush and YOU never had a hiccup. Did you talk to everybody who tried ZBrush? Did they all have error free execution? Most doubtedly. The world is neither fair nor balanced. Some developers are better than others. Some applications are simpler than others. Some design approaches are simpler or better than others. I've written one piece of flawless code in any language that I've ever used (it begins, "Hello, world"). Even with that, which is usually the simplest program ever conceived, I've seen dozens of programmers with errors and troubles, not related to their naivety with the language or programming. As you build an application, that one variable turns into thousands, tens of thousands, millions of variables. That one function (method) turns into hundreds, if not thousands, of functions. None of these live in a vacuum. The libraries and program modules all interact, variables and methods interact, and the underlying system interacts with them. Again, you might think that you have several "perfect" applications with no bugs. This is not only untrue, it is impossible. No application of sufficient size that runs on more than one static machine is perfect or without flaws and bugs (there is some mathematical proof for this). And be thankful that Poser 5 works for the most part for most people. I remember upgrading ProComm, a general communication package (dialup, web, e-mail, fax, bbs, ftp, telnet, etc), some years back. It sucked (period). It crashed, it crashed my system, it froze my system, it disabled other communication software. Obviously this was not an isolated instance as they released a "patch" (lol) several weeks later that was as large as the installation itself. IOW, they f@#ked up big time and had to practically recode their application to fix the overwhelming bugs that it shipped with. And they were a rather large software company with a large user base. Microsloth (see latest security flaws) and Apple (see 10.2 upgrade complaints) aren't as perfect either... Kuroyume

wolf359: I realized that after reading the system requirements. It just seems unusual for a 3D application not to take advantage of 3D hardware acceleration (although mine doesn't because it is Java and avoiding Java3D). No need to be sorry, it was ignorance on my part. Borahyumeh - wrenching foot from mouth ;)

thebert is absolutely correct! Chaos theory (a validated mathematical and physical theory based upon real world observations) and its kin, non-linear dynamics, predict that complex systems with complex interactions behave indeterminately. No software company, not even Microsoft with its thousands of developers and testers, can avoid having software problems because everybody has a different system: different hardware in different configurations, different software, different drivers, different data, different everything. And all of their distinct components interact differently. One might try to bring up the digital nature of computers. This won't help. Chaos theory was STARTED due to these types of observations on computers and calculators first. And because of this, no software (or hardware) company can predict problems with certainty. They'd have to test on every possible configuration, which is impossible. Good companies test alot and catch as many as plausible, but the real test is releasing it into the real world and making fixes as they are discovered (with patches, upgrades, and service packs). Greybro: How much are PhotoShop 7 and Max 4 and the full Bryce 5? How long have their respective companies been in business? That makes a big difference. Adobe is a mega corporation with dozens of major applications (Acrobat, PhotoShop, Illustrator, LiveMotion, AfterEffects, and on and on). AutoDesk is also a mega corporation with several major applications (AutoCAD, 3D Studio Max, Character Studio, and on and on). Yes, Discreet is a subsidiary of AutoDesk. CL is not a mega corporation. How long have they had Poser? AutoDesk and Adobe have been at this for nearly twenty years. Give CL a friggin' break!! (And stop comparing $2000 apps with $300 ones). Kuroyume

Hey, why is everybody quoting their CPU/RAM specs? These, especially the RAM, will aid in rendering, but you should know where all the work is being done: your graphics card! What graphics card are you using and are you using OpenGL or Direct3D? How much memory does it have and what kind of 3D support (NVidia, 3Dfx, etc)? This is a 3D graphics application and is therefore heavily dependent upon the 3D graphics acceleration of your system. I've seen major differences in quality and speed (Poser 4) between my ATI Radeon 7500 and GeForce 4 cards. If and when you decide that these are 'bugs' and need to be enumerated to CL, this is a very important variable to mention to them. Kuroyume

neurocyber, there is a thread here somewhere (I'll look) from Nosfiratu (of CL) that describes the alternatives if there is no possible means of registering online. (please hold - Jeopardy theme plays) http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=847655 It's a long thread, but there is some relevant info there. Or, you could go to Curious Labs online with the system that is and look for info about non-online registration or send an e-mail to them. Kuroyume

Thread: Did you get a message like this from Curious Labs Inc.? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Sorry. I know, but you can imagine three people (who knows how many for real) trying to prepare and coordinate shipments and fire off shipment notices to a thousand people a day. Probably not totally automated and you can bet that they bit off more than they could chew with everybody's flurry to get their copy of P5 (with pre-orders and orders around the release date). Anyway, don't quote me on this, but I thought that I read somewhere that pre-orders would have their tracking # by 9/6/02. I just (literally) received mine, but it doesn't bother me as long as it eventually arrives (with Airbone's (that's not a typo) record as described on this forum, that could be a sight to see). ;P With that in mind, your shipment notification may arrive later tonight or in the morning. That's not too bad considering some online ordering that I've done in the past. One software company took my money (credit card) with a "you'll get your preregistered copy of the software in an e-mail within 24 hours" and didn't receive it for nearly three weeks and after several escalatingly ligitical e-mails to them. Patience, Kuroyume
