Ah, thanks WandW - I was just wondering if Phil was up to speed. I should have known he was. :D
I now have Miki 3 installed and am trying to do a quick render before dashing to the airport. Why did I choose IDL for a quick render? Because I'm daft, that's why...

Thread: Why doesn't Smith Micro sell their figures without Poser? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
The native P8 figures are vastly under-rated, and it's true that support for them is almost non-existent.
However, Wardrobe Wizard goes a long way to addressing this. I am having some issues converting V4's bodysuit to Alyson, but many other conversions work fine.
For what it's worth, Alyson unmorphed is not a particularly attractive figure - she's somewhat cartoonish. But turn a dial or two and the change is awesome Flat her face a little, adjust her cheekbones... I remember similar accusations being made about Apollo Maximus when he was first released. These figures are intended to be morphed, not usedfrom the box.
In addition, the P8 figures have amazing expression morphs - good enough that even when I'm working with a DAZ figure, I've started using P8 expressions for a reference.
I find them a lot of fun to work with, and I'm making a conscious effort to make more WW conversions and use Alyson and Ryan more often.
I can't say why SM don't make them generally available. Perhaps there's a compatibility issue, or perhaps they're just our bonus for investing in Poser (perhaps they're exclusive to encourage others to invest in Poser).

Thread: Poser 8 Artifacts | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Your render may not have stalled at all - just taking an age
Make sure your new Poser 8 has the latest service pack installed. It makes a big difference to rendering with IDL. Especially the artifacts.
If you were trying to render with IDL, be very careful with the quality settings - they can slow you down enormously. If I'm using IDL with some normal lights, I generally keep the IDL quality below 10. If using only ambient lighting, I go up to about 25.
I find a mix of IDL and standard lights works best under most circumstances.
Was the block where the render stopped over hair or some other transparent material? IDL really slows down when processing transparencies. You might think it's stopped completely, but it hasn't - just taking an age to calculate the shadows. You can speed this up by going to your item properties and unchecking Visible in Raytracing. Then the transparency is ignored.
As with P6 and P7, watch your Min Shading Rate and Pixel Samples. MSR rarely needs to go below 0.20, and pixel samples above 5 are necessary only for depth of field. LIkewise, you don't need more than 2 raytrace bounces unless you need refraction or are bouncing off several reflective surfaces. Irradiance caching between 50 and 90 is good for most purposes.
P8 (and PP2010) IDL is awesome. I rarely work without it now. But it is a monster on resources. I've really had to sharpen up my act when it comes to my render settings - combine transparencies, displacement, depth of field, high resolution and IDL, and you'll really want to know how to optimise your render or you could tie up your machine for days.

Thread: Last Week in the Gallery 50 | Forum: Photography
It's been a while since I checked my site mail, and I've only just discovered one of my photographs was selected for this.
So a belated thank-you to whoever decided to add my work to the selection - and to those who viewed it and left so many nice comments. It's very much appreciated.

Thread: OT: Gary Gygax Has Passed Away | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Most of my hobbies, and perhaps some of my professional abilities as well, owe something to Gygax. Gaming (both tabletop and computerised) is the obvious one. But his influence also helped focus my burgeoning interest in history and archaeology. And I first got into 3D artwork to illustrate characters. :)
My ability to write, from which I've made my living for nearly 20 years, was initially cut by the need to write understandable scenarios.
Gary Gygax, rest in piece.
