I've been thinking on this for a few hours, how Gygax influenced aspects of the world.
It could be easily said that he started modern gaming; Chainmail & D&D are in the background of every role playing game; some of the first Computer games were D&D based, which influenced not only all following computer & video games, but also the demand for personal computers in the first place. I've lost track of how many people I know got involved in programming due to D&D.
Some of the very earliest traffic on arpanet, which evolved into the internet, was Fantasy Role Playing and adventure gaming.
How many people signed up for AOL or Compuserve to play online RPG's obviously based on D&D? how much did that effect the development of both the internet and modern MMORPG's?
AND, while Fantasy art was around before Gary, How much would there have been without the D&D spawned books, magazines, games, movies, etc? Throw that in with his influence on personal Computers & the Internet, and you have a argument that Mr. Gygax is directly responsible for Renderosity.
Regardless, I know that I could cite Mr. Gygax as the reason I have 3 wonderful kids; I met their mom in a Gaming store.
Thread: Just my thoughts on Poser..... | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Quote - You know, I'm still trying to convince some of my artist friends that digital art is art!
Oh yeah.
I've never concerned myself with the "art" thing, because I just don't consider myself an Artist, and have NEVER claimed to be one TTBOMK. I'm just a tech, with maybe a (very) little artistic vision.
A while back i was helping to put together 3D models for a fanfilm, and to give some idea of scale I used a kaylee morphed figure that I grabbed over at Daz forums (it's pretty good, BTW).
I posted a few renders up to the Top Secret Project Site without comment except for "this is the 3D set i'm working on, with a Kaylee figure for scale".
Within 24 hours I had 3 diatribes from 3 different project members complaining of my posting crap poser art, why poser was in every way inferior to everything else ever created, and I shouldn't call myself an Artist. My replies, pointing out that I never called myself an artist or that what I posted was "Art", elicited even longer diatribes.
I've seen this attitude a lot, ever since Poser Pro.
My opinion is that an Artist is an Artist, regardless of the medium. Someone who is not an artist is not an artist, regardless of the medium. Artistic ability and mastery of your tools results in Art.
Thread: Never used Dynamic clothes much, is it deadly slow if i do 900 frames? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
It really depends on a couple of factors.
maybe the biggest factor is the complexity of the cloth, how many polygons are involved in collision calculations; if you are doing a animation with only a simple skirt for instance, you have a relatively low poly object only colliding with the hip & upper leg area of your figure. quick.
A more complex cloth which collides with everything but the head and feet is going to require big calculations for every frame, which is going to take forever.
I guess, as with everything else, it would help if you more clearly defined what exactly you are trying to do.
Thread: Does Poser eat up HD space even if you save your movie to an external Drive? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
It's been a rule of thumb for me to make sure the drive that poser is on has enough free space to store the movie uncompressed; I've had graphics apps in the past that needed the space, as they rendered out each individual frame then compressed them into the finished product only at the end of the process. I have no idea if Poser or the Quicktime compressor work this way.
Also, if you are working with dynamics, both cloths & hair make pretty big temp files.
However, the last Apple product I touched was a new Lisa.
Thread: I need beta-testers! | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Quote - Hi all!
I need 2 or 3 beta-testers for a Hiro outfit you could see here, here and there.
PM me if you're interested, i need a P6 owner, P5, and P7 to check compatibility.
if the admins could get around to creating a beta tester forum (or some sort of way to help us find beta testers) life would be a lot easier.
Thread: I really want to sell my V4 morph | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Quote - > Quote - .....I hav eno issue with people creating quality items and wanting to sell them. My issues are with people doing almost no work at all, and trying to sell that as a "product", in the hopes of having a get rich scheme, which it ain't.
amen, brother! my issue is the markets being flooded with superficial and 'unprofessional' stuff. i am sick and tired of digging my way through the cesspit with the faint hope to find a pearl! so please don't encourage them, says i!
I resent that!
...what? oh, you were not specifically refering to me? sorry....
Original Poster, I've got maybe 6 things sitting on my hard drive I want to sell here; but there is something a little, or a lot, wrong with each one of them, and the review process at renderosity is really, really, really stringent. I hate to admit it, but this is almost always a good thing.
I managed to get 3 things in the marketplace here in the last 4 years, and 2 of those they really shouldn't have. I strongly suggest you practice, a LOT, with making freestuff before you try for the marketplace. After that, you are going to want to enlist some beta testers (I'm still looking for some) and let them have a crack at it.
Thread: myspace hacked | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Quote - does this really affect people? :confused
Only if you, your kids, or someone you know has a myspace account. I think everyone at least knows someone with a myspace account.
I think the worst thing I've seen so far (in the hour since i've been looking at this) is a guys site being turned into a "pedophiles memoir".
I've already woke up my kids to make them change theirs, and warn their friends.

Thread: Possible to have a Beta Tester forum? | Forum: Suggestion Box
Anything ever happen on this? I've got something I'm finishing up, and need a P5 tester. thats working on the assumption that P7 will open P6 stuff, of course.
I have a copy of p5 laying around, but don't have a computer to put it on.
Thread: Bryce 5.5 free at DAZ | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I'm not a big Studio fan, but I have to admit that having them so tightly integrated, and FREE, pretty much rocks.
