thanks again dan for your info and for taking the time to do a quick websearch on the matter. i shall look into it further myself now that you've alerted me to this quirk of cinema's. i had noticed that it wasn't generating MTL files to go with the OBJ - now i know why - thanks :)

thanks dan for the link - it clarified the issues about exporting 3ds et al meshes for me - i couldn't figure that one out at all. :) they certainly like to keep us on our toes. btw, the program that seems to have problems exporting OBJ files with mats is Cinema 4d - it may just be me doing something wrong though. :)

you can't covert odp files to any other format - as far as i know. if you have created a model using lattice or terrain then you can easily export them as lwo. but other objects don't work that way. also, sorry but in my message with image i meant odp not obj files - stupid typo on my part

i have found that 3ds files will retain their material colour when imported into bryce 5 but obj don't. lwo files also retain their assigned materials. as to exporting - as far as i know you can only export models you've made using lattices and terrains. all others can only be saved as odp files using the 'create' palette. if you like i'll post some images showing what i mean

happy birthday thanks for paving the way, most intrepid journeyer - i shall be joining your hallowed ranks later this month. keep some champers on ice for me ;)
Thread: C4D object to bryce | Forum: Bryce
you can't import the native c4d format directly into bryce, and vice versa. bryce whet my appetite for the world of 3d so i have recently purchased c4d for modelling - i have found that exporting an object from c4d as an obj file without any scale adjustment works best - the scale seems to become irrelavent when importing it into bryce. something you could try is, immediately upon importing a c4d obj file into bryce click on the attribute tag, check the size and then use that to adjust it to a more appropriately sized object. 3ds files from c4d also work but they don't keep their groups as well - tending to split into a long list of components instead. hope that's of some assistance djzer0 brodiss

I'm sorry for your loss Zhann. I am just glad that you had the opportunity to love RB and be loved by him.

striving, i am sorry you feel this way
i am a newbie, both to Renderosity and Bryce. when i joined up, your image was being featured and it made me think that this was a place where i would be inspired and learn so i could use bryce, eventually, to its full potential.
until your post i hadn't realised that there was a clicky element here or that some people are so shallow and insecure that they find it necessary to create aliases in order to pretend they're better than they really are. i have found the people to be friendly on the forum and very helpful to an ignoramus such as myself. though i haven't been able to contribute much myself yet, i have been looking forward to increasing my involvement as i evolve in my use of bryce.
art is a matter of taste at the best of times - and can go through fads - but true art is that which endures long after all the dross has slimed its way into oblivion.
there are many fine people in this group and while, at times it may seem they are only small in number, they will always be there. that is why i find it worth staying.
i will be sorry to see you and your work leave but, whatever you decide, i hope you and your work continue to go from strength to strength.

snap Zhann :) - i had been having this problem for ages so thought i'd install the patch - made things go nuts - the DTE was a nightmare - so i uninstalled everything and now only have the original program installed. thanks for your suggestions/comments Zhann
Thread: materials lab help please | Forum: Bryce
thanks Zhann for the suggestion - I do that and 90% of the time, it's fine - it's just that sometimes it just won't keep the new settings - on occasion i have found it to jump back several settings as i save it. i am beginning to wonder if it is something to do with how Bryce handles memory as it seems to be more likely to go nuts after i've created several materials either that or the materials lab is just holding its own minor rebellion :)

just as my hair follicles were starting to relax - and there's nothing better than content hair - the materials lab has started changing settings again. i made a number of materials using TheBryster's suggestion and was happy with how well things were behaving. but now - well, it's not co-operating.
Thread: materials lab help please | Forum: Bryce
thanks bryster - i think that's just about the only thing i haven't tried. i've tried out your suggestion a couple of times now and it all seems to be aok so hopefully it will continue to behave. :) i thank you and what's left of my hair thanks you.
