I may be talking complete rubbish but I thought that the hoya ndx400 is not a polarising filter - it simply absobs 8/9 stops therefore allowing v long exposures - used mostly by architectural and astronomical photographers (and perhaps some who complain of too much light - in the middle of the sahara) I have never used one but it might be a fun toy C

danob's advice on a good wide-angle is certainly sound - especially if you need to capture groups (famillies etc...) without being to back up as much as you might like to. Also, think of a low-light, something like a 50mm f1.4 or f1.7 you can use without flash.

try a fixed focal length lens - they are simpler to build than zooms and therefore often sharper :-))

Switzerland is one of the most expensive countries in the word as we also have a quasi-monopoly, ADSL costs approx US$45 a month. Although it might be cheaper not to have it, we decided that we preferred unlimited access and not having to worry about the bill at the end of the month. As we pay a flat fee, we have also both discovered new things to do online and so spend more time on the computer than we used to - includeing things like internet telephony (check out Skype) that save us money in other ways.

photographers and fishermen: both can become obsessed by "the one that got away". In my case, a stork flying not more than 4 feet above a field. Only thing to do is try and do better next time.

I am not competent to restore pictures myself but I have alittle bit of common sense advice: 1. Make sure you do not dammage the originals further, be careful when scanning (at the higheest possible resolution) or you might want to photograph them if they are too delicate. Once you have a useable copy you can worry about new prints. Sorry about not being more helpful.
