once the selection is active- choose the layer you want to duplacate from, then use the ability to make a new layer via copy

if vue exports with the alpha channel intact when you open ps, use the alpha information as a selection... ( urm ctrl clicking it, i think ) keep the selection active in rgb mode  and duplucate the layer while u have it selected, ( you can hide the background to see the transparent effect)
if i you made your own selection, just keep it active and make a new channel, select the channel - use black/white foreground background colours - hit delete - you should have an alpha channel made from a selection (just invert it if the forground backround is topsey turvey)
hope some one can explain it better , or some of this made sense.

edit...

the red layer is only in the " mask mode " just click on the normal mode to exit quick mask , plus when you copy the image into the mode you automatily get the right selction...  then "delete the area"  you may have to swich from normal to quick mask and back just to get a grasp on what things you ar effecting on the layer..tip hide a layer you are not working on just so you can watch what happens to the one you are working on

http://www.blizzard.com/inblizz/contests/artcontest2006/ is a reference of my use of games not drawing for them, sigh. if you want to know where i've been, i'm pretending i have a life and not doing a great job... oh well see you in another 4months :D

perhaps we renderosity folk should make a 'fan art gallery" section... if there isn't one

using the image of the previous post as  the brush and here's how it turned out,
it was only an idea that didn't quite workout (for pure large brush work)

flatten a texture- double the image's canvas size, select the image area. Copy ,
paste a coppy on each side and ech corner (or drag it over to the white area )
it wont be seamless but the trick might be to flip things on an axis
or for even more Whacked out idea  create aspecific size tile and create a double brush. say you have a 400x400 tile if you have two exact same brush heads (acting as one actual brush) with thier centre's 400 pixels apart you can paint over seams , you may need a vertical and horisontal versions (?)
the image i provide is a single brush you can try as experiment.

SeanE's, lundqvist's and Karosnikov's monitor walk into a bar.... and even with colour calibration they would have observable differences (not funny but horrificly true)

photoshop/imageReady is good for previewing a painting of what you want a page too look like. i like to slice it up the long old fasion way, make rectangular selections, cut, make new file, paste, save for web. if you insist on a background image make it a 'tile'.

when you use a high passed layer with a blending mode of hardlight, it does a verry interesting sharpening effect, depending on the stength/weakness of your filter - and opacity of the upper layer
Thread: Photo to Coin | Forum: Photoshop
i was thinking very briefly about it, my answers were for creating one that looked good in Photoshop. Simply put high pass will reveal where contrast is. starting with the original pic, turn it into a 72 dpi image , that is about 600 pixels wide. do this useing the menu, image size. click ok, when done. save as. 72dpi.psd. ok. duplicate the background layer once. apply the filter 'highpass. to the background layer. use 3 pixel radius?. fade the layer abouve it by changing the layers opacity try 50%. go to the layers menu, i think and flatten image. paint the image area that you don't want black. i'd be interested to see how it resolves (forgive my dixlexic spelling)
