NP at all Papu, I've gleaned quite a bit from the Poser users here, so I'm happy to give back when I can. :)
Thread: About composition | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Are there some rules that you ought to follow - and perhaps break, once you know them?
There are indeed rules to composition, and all the elements of art, and you've hit the nail on the head - the purpose of learning them is to know when you are breaking them.
- A single figure in an image placed on the dead center -- or perhaps on the golden mean
The golden mean is a mathmatically determined set of lines on your composition; some Renaissance guy got all obsessive about determining the GM's exact value. I just treat it like a range, a sort of quadrant in a comp. I think the "rule of thirds" is pretty close - someone correct me if I'm wrong here.
The relationship between foreground and background
Basically, elements in the foreground pop out, and elements in the background recede. There's more to it than that probably, but you'll have to get it from someone else. :)
Making the image dynamic, yet balanced
Creating an interesting path for the eye to follow
Etc.
Creating a path for the eye to follow is probably the most crucial element of composition, once the more egregious no-nos are dispensed with (tangents, horrible imbalance, etc.)
What do you think?
I think it's an interesting topic. I'll throw two more considerations; negative and positive space, and composition vs. design. Oh yes, I almost forgot focal points. FPs are probably the most important thing to understand about composition. You start with the idea that you want a focal point (or a focal region), and then you start considering all the things that contribute to your chosen point/region as focal point. There are tons of such things; contrast, detail, color, the aforementioned flow lines, species bias (the face of an animal demands more attention from a viewer than a normal object, and an anthropomorphic face demands still more attention, and the eyes are the focal point of any face, etc.), and more.
Rules are made to be broken :)
Rules are made to be understood before they're broken. That's like one of the axioms of art.
Someone once told me, and I believe it's true, that setting a figure in the centre of a picture makes for a very formal, portrait-style image, whereas setting them to one side gives a more natural feel.
Yes, dead-center is a bit boring. If one is working on a portrait where the subject must be in the center, make it subtly off-center; put one eye or the other at dead-center, for example.
Oh yeah, since I'm just brain-dumping here, I can't forget the all-important L-shape; L-shapes are very strong compositional tools. Think of the overall composition, not of lots of little L-shapes stuck here and there. It's a lot easier to illustrate this concept than it is to describe it. Message edited on: 09/29/2004 11:43

Thread: improving those tiny dial labels | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I guess this sort of thing is where Curious Labs got the name...as in, "mmm, that certainly is a curious thing for them to do!" Don't get me wrong, Poser is a wonderful app, but there are so very many little, tiny things that they need to fix. The dials are right up there on the list. Related is the bit where one can't customize whether param windows show dial groups as expanded or contracted (one can't customize anything in Poser, for that matter). The whole UI is designed with looking pretty as a higher priority than functionality - everything is low contrast grey. Just look at the hierarchy window - wouldn't it benefit with a bit of COLOR? Say, one color for eye icons set to visible, another for invisible? One color for locked actors, another for unlocked ones? Better yet a new icon to show lock status (with its own colors), so the part name can be colorized to show selection status. How about a second level of cascading in the body parts menu, so we get leg >buttock >thigh >shin >foot >toe instead of one giant menu that has to be scrolled because all the fingers and everything else is on it? Better yet, how about we get to set up the bloody hierarchy for the body parts drop-down ourselves, since it's just a silly little selection menu UI? I could practically write a book about this, and I've only been playing with Poser for under two weeks! This is kindegarten stuff. No algorithms, no math, nothing, just a bit of common sense and testing. It's not like I'm asking for real undo here. It gets me to wondering "WTF?" because they're such little, tiny, insignificant things for CL, but such chronic, nagging, annoying things for us. Hopefully the new management will fix all these problems that are so easily fixed for P6. Btw, does anyone know where to find the skinny on P6 - how far along, new features, etc?

Thread: Well, that's one for me, one for the site admins. Still pissed as all holy hell | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Er, yeah that's censorship. Thing is, this is private property, and the right to exercise domain over one's property (easily) trumps the right to free speech. What I hate is when I miss out on a juicy story. :-P

Howard that sounds fantastic. Like I said every second counts, and they add up quickly. Are you planning on a freebie or commercial release?

I just started out w/ Poser myself about two weeks ago and my advice is to just put in the time and things will work out. PLAY with it for a while, and don't try to force anything. The community for this app is so huge that you'll find many people willing to help, and tons of freebies. I've solved most of my own problems by just playing around. When that failed, I've posted questions here and they've been answered quickly. You'll be surprised at how quickly you learn your way around Poser; then again I've been putting almost all of my free time into it lately. :-D

Okay, I was afraid that's what you meant. That's no biggie though. I don't use IrfanView for real work, just as a quick (very low resources required) image viewer. I've been pasting my renders into it for saving but now that I've used P5's save function I like it better. I can't check out your example now, I'm on a 56k and am currently downloading a number of files. It takes a while just for refreshing/posting here.

Believe me I know they add up quickly. I'm running a sub-gigahertz AMD with paleo-RAM. :(
When you say I'll need to reset the lights and the camera, you mean the camera and light positions and settings of the original pz3 file won't carry over, right?
Oh, and saving as TIFFs - can I do that through copy picture (and paste into IrfanView then save as TIFF) or should I render to a new window and save that?
Thanks for the quick reply.

Mmmm, that worked like a charm, thanks very much lesbentley. I might have to learn Python scripting ;).

Hi Karen that's plenty easy enough for me. I haven't used copy/paste in P5 at all except for renders, I tried it with the light selected in the (forget the name of it - the "drop-up" list below the doc window), I hadn't thought of doing it via the parameter window.
Thanks!
