For a free and good windows installer you can try Inno Setup. I have used it in all my projects that need installers. Very easy to setup with a simple script. It comes with a few examples.FlyerX

You can try PoseRay. PoseRay can import both 3DS and OBJ and fix the creases.Check the tutorial in the manual on how to use PoseRay to import creased models into Poser.

You can try PoseRay to convert the 3DS file into OBJ and import that into Poser. UV coordinates will be kept in the translation. You can get PoseRay at the provided link.
See the tutorials in the manual on how to use PoseRay as an import tool for Poser.

Since I do not have Poser 5 I do not know how the nodes and material files are structured in Poser 5. Thus I could not implement that in PoseRay.In PoseRay for a material where you want reflection just increase the reflectivity for that material to 100%. If the material in Poser 4 had reflection mapping it will be reflective in PoseRay.
Also you can play with the POV-Ray material tab in PoseRay. You can apply POV-Ray specific materials there instead of maps and colors.
If you can you can email me the material file from Poser 5 and I can see if I can update PoseRay to take at least some of the settings from that file. Are these contained in the scene file or are they separate?

PoseRay will read OBJ, LWO, 3DS, DXF, RAW, UDO and export OBJ so you can import into Poser.Check the tutorial for importing into Poser in the PoseRay manual.

You can try PoseRay.PoseRay will read a Poser scene and optionally simulate cartoon rendering using POV-Ray.
You can use PoseRay&POV-Ray as a replacement rendering engine for Poser.

One of PoseRay's features now is that it can serve as a import tool for Poser. From 3.8.0 PoseRay can import LWO, 3DS, DXF, RAW, OBJ, UDO and export OBJ. LWO support is better than the others because Newtek has the format documentation at their site.
One of the tutorials in the PoseRay help file mentions how to make sure Poser does not mangle the normals when it imports a 3D model.

I wish I could make Linux and Mac native versions of PoseRay but I have never used any of those operating systems and starting now would be too much. I am glad that PoseRay runs in Linux (thanks Penguinisto for the test) with emulators and someone else just confirmed that it also works with MacOS X 10.3.5 using Virtual PC 6.1.1 or Blue Label. Hello,I think I found the problem that some people were having while trying to run PoseRay. It was the OpenGL extension check that was going into an infinite loop. I also fixed a few material and cartoon rendering bugs. The updated version (v3.8.1) is available at my site.
So if you downloaded PoseRay and it crashed give it a try now and see if it works this time.
The image attached is a Hellboy LWO model in cartoon mode. The model had to be subdivided twice to get a decent result.
I wish I could upload in PNG instead of this dreadful JPG format.
