Well... hopefully it's not you that's dead.
(Sorry, I don't know anything about the problem, I just couldn't resist making the joke :)

Get lots of RAM. A lot of hard drive space is good, but 7200 rpm is probably plenty of speed. Then buy some more RAM. A CD burner will be useful for archiving old projects. Plus, get a lot of RAM. A fast video card with lots of memory is helpful, because posing will be fairly quick that way. Buckets of RAM. I'd go with at least a 19" monitor, screen real estate is at a premium with Poser.
I used to get my components from a place in California called PC Shopping Planet, but I think they've gone out of business. I've gotten my last two computers from Dell, because they I can buy 'em cheapr from them than I can build 'em, any more.
Oh, and get as much RAM as you can. :)

Yeah, it looks even worse on my machine,as shown. Just to test it, I imported the model into POV-Ray, and it seems to render okay, except for the too-well-defined edges in the band. I modeled the band at the bottom with hard edges, so the vertext normals make it look odd in POV.
I intruded the base of the hat inside, to make it hollow, and I suspect that that's part of the problem. I'd bet that Poser is getting some of those polygons to show. I'll see about modelling a different one without the interior polygons and see if that makes a difference.

forum taken away ...
sigh
It always amazes me how confused a lot of people seem to be about this concept.
There are business entities who pay for server space on the Internet, and they have mechanisms in place where people all over the planet can post messages and/or pictures for all the rest of the world to view. They are not under any obligation, however, to allow anything to be posted by anyone at any time. Quite the contrary, they are often under a number of legal and other obligations to their investors and business partners to specifically restrict certain kinds of information. And, even if they weren't, they pay the server bills, they buy the hard drives, they employee programmers and designers to bring this service to us; they can define their own rules, and they do.
Nobody took away your forum. Feel free to pay for your own domain name, server space, and telecommunications lines and say anything you want, and invite anyone to participate in any way you dictate.
You have the right to speak your mind. Nobody but you has the responsibility of paying for your soapbox.

I really LIKE what you've done with the place! Thank you very much. I've never been much of an interior decorator, but I had a great location to work with. ;)
Thread: Resizing a group of photo's | Forum: Community Center
Paint Shop Pro can indeed do that, using Menu>File>Batch>Process. You'd have to record a script first to specify the resizing you wanted to apply to each one. Another program that can do batch resizing from the command line is Image Alchemy. Hope that's helpful,

I did a quick check of the usual suspects (DAZ, RDNA, TurboSquid, 3D Cafe, and Terra Incognita) and I couldn't find anything. I'm attaching a link to a chef's hat I just now whomped up in Wings 3D... I don't have a copy of Poser on this computer, so I can't check to see how it imports, but it ought to work okay, as long as the polygon smoothing doesn't warp it out of shape. I don't have the tools here to turn it into a prop file, but you should be able to import it okay. I expect a simple white texture with little or no highlighting will look okay with it.If it's close but not quite, please let me know and I'll see if I can't fix it up some more.

Where does one buy a UPS? I had my power >> blip last night, killing a piece of work >> that had been going on the better half of >> a day using Tailor. The two I've gotten I got at Best Buy; I would imagine that you could get a pretty good deal at any number of on-line electronic stores.

UPS? Uninterruptable Power Supply. Keeps you from pulling your hair out after the power suddenly goes away. :)
Thread: With all the bad spelling in the Renderosity forums... | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
We must also remember that no matter how well spelled our words are, many of us will still write "different than", split infinitives, dangle participles, and employ pronouns without referent.
And start sentences with conjunctions, a writing faux pas up with which we should not put.

Thread: Looking for a shawl | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
There's a free shawl in obj format at Terra Incognita (search for shawl at the download link) that you could import and try to adjust; you'd probably have to make your own textures for it, assuming it's a shape you're looking for.
Hope that's helpful,
Jack
