Thread: Vic 4.2 Download Frenzy.... | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Quote - BUT...the Daz admin is saying that we will now have to re-install V4.1 in order to use V4.2. This means that there is a potential of not being able to use previously saved V4.1 characters as Daz has removed V4.1 base and morphs from it's website. If this is the case, I wouldn't be surprised if Daz later came out saying that all the V4.1 add-ons need updating to be V4.2 compatible.
From what I'm reading over at DAZ, it's not that bad. Note: I haven't downloaded the update myself yet; this is just my interpretation of various posts over there.
What they've done is change V4.2 so that the morphs are handled slightly differently. The "update v4.1" thing they included with the last patch is what will conflict with the new V4. The actual morphs are unaffected, only the way they work, so any clothing, hair, add-on characters etc should work just as they did before with either v4.1 or v4.2, and any saved scenes will still load as they were.
What isn't clear to me is whether we can continue to use the v4.1 and the old morph packs and have v4.2 installed alongside - I'm getting the impression that this isn't possible and either everything (base V4 and all the DAZÂ morph packs) must be updated or nothing. That said, if the update works as it's supposed to, I guess there's no reason to need both in one runtime.
(They removed V4.1 base and morphs temporarily from the store so they can update the download files. They'll be back as V4.2 once the update is online.)
Thread: Im simple...Whats EXP???? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
LOL! I don't know if it's possible to explain it in simple terms. But I'll try.Â
The INJ/REM system used for the V3/M3 etc figures relied on having blank morphs channels in the CR2 ready for the morphs to be injected. Earlier Injectable morphs used to pick an existing morph channel to override. Both of these systems have serious weaknesses because in either case a morph channel must already exsit for an injectable morph to be used.Â
What this meant in practice is there's a limit to the number of morphs you can use with a given character. And the big morph expansion sets popular at DAZ had to include a new CR2 file with enough blank channels to support the new morphs. This made it hard to mix-and-match the expansion sets, impossible for the non-technical among us.
This problem was already showing up with some of the custom V4 figures on the market - I noticed when trying to use Aery Soul's Alice with a custom face morph someone else had made that they just wouldn't inject together - the merchants were using the same blank channel. There's an easy fix, but it's inconvenient.
The EXP thing is an attempt to circumvent this problem. The software basically looks at the morph sets you own and re-creates a new V4 CR2 with enough channels for what you have installed. It doesn't prevent others using the old INJ/REM system but it does make it easier to use multiple sets of expansions together...as long as you've bought them from DAZ, or the merchant has made them compatible with DAZ's system.Â
So in theory it's a very good thing. Personally I think the disadvantages outweigh the advantage.
Thread: Material Room Help Needed (Poser 6) | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
White is always a problem. Some of the plasticky look will be down to lighting - I'd use IBL at around 60% with the specular low or turned off, and be prepared for some postwork on the skin to compensate. Use spotlights for shadows, but not white light - greyish tones maybe.
I can think of a couple of things to try with the dress - I don't have that one so this is untested.
Try connecting an Edge Blend node between the diffuse and the image map to soften up the edges and help avoid the harsh highlights.
Change the specular colour to white but set the value very low - 0.1 maybe.
Connect the bump node to the image map (with bump strength as high as looks okay to you) and a granite node to the displacement, with the displacement again set very low.

Thanks everyone!
The CP SWAT gear looks amazing, but it doesn't look much like the photos I've been working from. Can anyone tell me if that set is realistic?
That texture set for the DAZ outfit is much closer, though. Thanks a bunch for the link!
Thread: Any tutorial for lighting like this? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Face-Off's scripts are fantastic. But it's worth noting that both the Real Skin Shader and HyperReal were developed for Poser 5. They work (incredibly well) by "faking" SSS.Â
Poser 6 and 7 have additional nodes, including SSS which I've found much more flexible in terms of creating realistic skin shaders.Â
Take a look at the Aery Soul skin shader tutorial (I don't have a direct link as I'm posting from work, but it's in the forum at aerysoul.com) - the tutorial shows different steps in creating their shader, and shows how different lighting affect it.
Thread: Lighting in P7 and more | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Quote - I was just playing with lighting and used the IBL (?) lights on a portrait of V4. There were harsh gray lines around the mouth, the shoulders faded to a very bright white while the neck was splotches of different colors...gray being the primary.
That sounds like a problem with your lighting setup, though I'm not sure what, exactly, from your description.
With IBL lights, keep the intensity of the main light at 45-65%, and don't have AO (ambient occlusion) set on the lights. I'd recommend using two lights in addition to an IBL light - a spot or point light to add some highlight and shadow, and, for portraits, a specular-only light (that is, in the material settings for the light, set the diffuse colour to black, the specular to white and turn the intensity up).
If you want to use AO, set it up on the materials instead - this uses less memory when you render as you'll only use it where it's needed.
Thread: Eyelash texture question for V4 | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Check the transparency falloff setting. Poser tends to default to 0.6 or something like that - it should be zero when using a transmap.
Thread: Eyebrows. Desperately seeking eyebrows. Paying 2D job offered. | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Well...this works best on a pale-skin texture with dark brows, but you could try it:Â
Make a copy of the texture, turn it to greyscale, invert the colours and then play with the brightness and contrast until you have nearly black skin and pale brows (this usually takes several attempts to get the contrast high enough). You can then use this as a mask to pick out only the hairs from the original version of the texture.Â
Imperfect, but it does the job.
Thread: URGENT! Poser 6 won't launch... Please Help | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I''ve had exactly the same problem. I still don't have a long-term solution but I've narrowed the cause down to the release of quick time I'm forced to install if I want iTunes.
Uninstall quick time and poser works perfectly. Unfortunately this means iTunes won't run and I need both. I tried to roll back to an earlier version of iTunes but I guess I don't have one old enough. Right now, my only solution is to keep uninstalling QT and then run the repair utility on iTunes each time I want to use it. I'm sure this is no good for my PC but until I find a better solution it's the best I can do.
Thread: is clother worth buying? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Clother is a "second skin" creator - essentially it adds a texture map on top of the skin texture to mimic clothing. It works quite well - I don't own it myself but I've seen loads of renders using it. Because it's second-skin the range of clothing you can create with Clother is limited (no skirts or flowing materials) but the various packages available show how versatile it can be even within those limitations. The downside is the only person creating clothes for Clother is the creator of the software. There was a thread some time ago in the copyright forum about someone who tried to unlock the software so others could create for it; the creator didn't like that at all. Whether it's worth it or not - depends on the kind of renders you want to do.

Thread: what whould you Wish for .... clothes and prop question | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I am desperate for sci fi clothing for any of the good female figures (V3 or SP3 are my faves for this project). But I need clothing with MORPHS because I need to create some quite muscular characters and I need clothing that doesn't look "sexed up". I don't want low cut tops and legs left naked, I want stuff that women would actually wear. Ive been able to add morphs to some outfits by Xurge and Uzilite using Wardrobe Wizard but as I'm making a series of images (covers) I can always use more.
Thread: Isit possible to redo the the free stuff area? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
At the risk of getting my wrist slapped for mentioning the Site-That-Should-Not-Be-Named, what I'd like to see in the freestuff area is a system similar to the one R'otica uses for their galleries. That is, a long list of categories presented as checkboxes when you upload an item. Categories in subsets eg: Poser, Daz|Studio, Bryce, Vue etc Michael, Victoria, Jessie, James, etc. Textures, Characters, Models, Morphs etc. Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Realism etc. Then when you upload a free product, you simply check as many as apply. Add the commercial/non-commercial, nudity, stand-alone/add-on as required fields. Many products are suitable for multiple applications, and with the unimesh line a lot of things work for multiple figures, too. As the freestuff area stands, it's difficult to upload and accurately describe a versatile product. And that makes it harder to find things. It would make searching easier because you could search for a category and/or search excluding a category. Add your own keywords and go. I do realise that such a radical change would cause issues for the items already there, any worthwhile overhaul is going to have that challenge.
Thread: Pupil (eye) Question | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Which figure are you using? The Unimesh line has some iris morphs but I don't think there's a star. The "Eyez" (at RuntimeDNA.com) are detailed eye models compatible with most of the popular figures, and they include an iris you can transmap to any shape you like. There were a couple of add-on texture sets that included some really whacky iris transmaps, I know there were several stars included. But that's a pay-for product; if you're looking to do this yourself I think Kirwyn's suggestion is probably the way to go: edit the iris texture you're using.
