Thanks you SilentWinter . That has sorted the problem. Thanks to others for their responses.

Just out of interest is there any reason why Daz Studio should be prone to n-gon problems. As I said above, the effect was not seen in Blender, Photoshop 3D, or Hexagon

Triangulation worked. Many thanks. The holes were formed using a boolean operation, which is something I have normally avoided in Bender because before version 2.8 the boolean operations did not work very well. This is probably why I have not encountered the problem before.

LaurieA: I have to admit that I don't really know what a geometry shell is. Is it possible one was included in the stone props I bought from Daz 3D? Updating the drivers didn't help.

Thanks for your help. The fault is associated with my new PC. My old PC running the same Daz 3D version under Windows 7 is OK. The only other difference is that the old machine's 3D 4.10 was upgraded from 3D 4.9 while 3D 4.10 was installed directly on the new machine. I'll update the drivers

LaurieA: Glad someone else has the problem. I was starting to think it was only me, The problem is the flashing colour as the mouse moves drives me nuts.
Razor42: Sorry about the low res. I was unsure as to how big an image the post would accept.
The blob is several stone props ( bought from Daz 3D ) stacked to make a pile of rocks so that the green represents several different surfaces, although they all have the same material. It does not happen on all objects. I have noticed it on props I have made myself where it appears to be material related. It does not occur on the Genesis figures. The image above has the viewport set to texture shading. If I change it to Iray, the colour is initially there but vanishes once the viewport starts to render. The full render in Iray is OK. There are no errors in the log. Some warnings relating roaming directories and lots of Not initialised in the GL section.
