Heya,

Anyone ever used Poser under Linux w/ Win4Lin?
I tried it an hour ago and it seem to work great (via Win98 host). Seem the speed's comparable to running Poser under Win98 natively. All Poser's functions seems to work as it should be.. I'm gonna try all my other apps (vue, vc6, codewarrior, ms office etc) and see if they work good. If they are, i'm going to go Linux 100% and get rid of my other OSes.

Downside to this i've seen so far unfortunately is that Win4Lin doesn't support DirectX and only runs Win9x/WinME only...no NT/XP...ARGH! And you can't run much games...
If i find all my regular apps run fine on Win98 then its ok I guess. I'm sick of leaving WinXP on for long periods of time and watch the PF (Pagefile) usage shoot up high.

The screen capture's what I ran on my notebook (P3 500mhz, 192 MB Ram Running Redhat 8.0 on Gnome Desktop).
Can't wait to try it on my desktop ;)

Anyone else tried anything like this before? Encountered any problems on the long run??

I had Poser running under Transgaming's WineX a year ago, but hadn't tried Win4Lin - does Win4Lin require a CD with Win98 on it still? Also, I thought they were working on a Win2k version? I'm currently in RH 8.0 on my laptop right now (playing in C for awhile today.):) /P

Yeah I heard bout the Win2k bit...but it isn't ready as of Win4Lin v4. And yes you'll need a Win9x CD and a valid serial of course. I doubt it has to be the official boot one tho. I believe just having the cabfiles on the CD would suffice. The whole thing is pretty fast though. I finished installing Win4Lin along with Win98 within half an hour. And the cool thing's that your virtual box boots up in less than 30 secs compared to Win9x booting up in minutes natively. Did you manage to run Poser good in WineX? I ran Poser4 in WineHQ's latest distrib of Wine a week ago and it ran miserably.

Try WineX, or better yet, Codeweavers' - Both are geared more towards graphics-intensive proggies (though I had to copy a buttload of DLL files over to get it running, and it was way unstable. I suspect things have improved since though.) I may have to scare up a copy of this critter (so I can also put it in my workstation at work... our grading/attendance proggie is the only obstacle to ditching Win2k entirely from my work machine :) ) /P

Radiosity, please keep us posted as you get more use out of poser (and vue). I'll pick up a copy, if I am confident it will work comparably well. I've heard good things about win4lin, but you can't try it out before you buy and I have no use for the programs they have tested it with and offer support for. I wonder if 9x emulation would be as unstable as really running it under 2k or xp? I have gotten to like being away from the old 9x crashes and memory problems. eric

Eric, seems it works fine so far...I've got it running for over 8 hours (with emule on linux in background). And Poser seem to average memory usage at bout 48 megs or so RAM. It even runs some old DOS apps I have very well. And i've been searching bout Win4lin limitations and such and all I've heard are only good things (minus DirectX support that is..) I think its something to do with the fact that you run Win9x/ME within the Linux Filesystem using ext2 (or whatever linux FS you use) and not FAT/FAT32/VFAT. And I also read that it is immune to most all windows viruses. Soon as i've made space on my notebook HDD i'll install and try out more apps.

Oh and you can try before you buy. Just go to the website and create a free account. It will allow you to download a full version of the software. You can then request for a 30 day key to be used with it and then re-enter a full ver key when you've bought it.

Never used firewire, so I can't say I know anything about the bus rate (is it faster than gigabit ethernet?) or availability. Considering the heavy use of Firewire on Macs, though, I bet there's support for firewire out there someplace, with OSX being the current Mac OS. Take a look at gigabit networking stuff. It's been around for years, but the stuff is just now reaching affordability. When I was looking at buying a Mac, I noticed that most of the Pro end systems came preinstalled with gigabit cards. Again, I suspect there is good support for it in the 'IX world. RdaiositySG, I'll check that out. I get their newsletter every once in a while, after trying to get a trial download, but at the time, they only offered the older version for download....sounds like they have changed things around a bit....going their now! eric

It is possible to use a Firewire network under Linux, but you'd probably be better off with ethernet. here's a link to some tests done on Firewire networking (and links to the modules)

Ratteler - I used FireWire to connect my external hard drive, but not for networking... ethernet cards are still cheap ;) I finally broke down and installed Win4Lin, and bought the critter... best $100 I'd spent in a long while! /P

So, Peng, Any luck with vue 4? (I think I saw you mentioned using it a time or two at PP) eric
