Subject: Texture question...

Zhann ( ) posted Wed, 09 April 2003 at 2:59 AM · edited Sat, 01 February 2025 at 12:47 AM

Hi all, I usually use Bryce, but I started in Vue and want to get back to it, you all create some awesome landscapes...question, how do I use one of my own textures (I have digital photo textures of all kinds of things) on say, a mountian range, the ground plane or a sphere? I've never done this in Vue, in Bryce I just go to the materials editor and import the 2d image, slap it on the mountian, tweak abit and I'm done...what must I do in Vue...step by step, I'm losing brain cells rapidly here...:)

Same in Vue Zhann:-) Let's take a sample: You create a terrain (or a sphere or whatever). It comes with the beige Vue default material. Select the object and then double-click in its material window top right. In the material editor click MAPPED PICTURE The LOAD button appears. Click it and select your bitmap from your HD. When selected, it will appear in the small preview. Don't click OK yet, but in the same window also select OBJECT STANDARD insteed of the default World standard. This provokes that the bitmap moves with the object. Also click the BUMP Tab. Right-click in the Bump production window and select EDIT FUNCTION. This opens a new window. There again, click MAPPED VALUE. Then click PICTURE and choose your bump map. You may use the Bitmap as a bumpmap, but it is better to create a special bumpmap for it. (see in our FAQ-->TUTORIALS section how to behave. You also can use an existing bumpmap from Vue. Click OK and OK. Now, these are the basics. You can play around with X and Y scale, as well in the Material editor as in the Bump function. You also can give more or less deepness to the bumps, invert them and more. But this would be too long now to explain. Do your proper experiences and read the user guide:-) Hope this helps. We are here for further questions:-) Guitta

It's pretty much the same thing in Vue. make a object, right click on it's default material, pick edit material that's displayed to open up the material editor. Look for the button mapped picture. browse to picture texture. You might also want to check out the tutorials here for cool and groovy effects that can be down too easily. There is some real good ones now on texturing.

Thanks, be sure that there are more questions to come, one more on this topic, after all of the above, how do I save it as a .mat file for future use or to offer as a freebie? One more, how do I rotate a terrian in the editor? For the life of me I couldn't find a way to do this anywhere..:}

When you have created your material, it will show up in the material window. Right-click it and select SAVE MATERIAL from the list. When offering a material, do't forget to join the used bitmap. Rotate a terrain? You rotate it in one of the 4 windows, not in the editor. Please have a look in your UserGuide for "simple basic" questions like this one.

Or have a look at my "Vue 4 first steps" tutorial. click the link:-) guittalogo.GIF

MightyPete ( ) posted Wed, 09 April 2003 at 3:59 AM

You just save the material as and new file.when your n the material editor click on the icon that looks like a floppy disk. I don't know exacty what you mean by the last question. You can toggle fron 3d view to top view. I don't think you can rotate it in the editor you may have to click ok and do it in the program part. Or if your making the terrain from a picture you can rotate the picture by clicking on where it says picture then there is little arrows on the right hand side to rotate it 90 degree steps.

The terrain can be rotated in the terrain editor by holding down the right mouse button while on the terrain and moving the mouse around, this allows you to move it in any direction

gebe ( ) posted Wed, 09 April 2003 at 3:37 PM

NO! That's wrong. The right mouse button moves THE SCENE inside the window, but doesn't move any object or terrain! The LEFT mouse button, in grabbing the terrain or its "ROTATE INSIDE" rotates it and in grabbing the terrain with the LEFT mouse button moves it. :-)Guitta guittalogo.GIF

arry ( ) posted Wed, 09 April 2003 at 5:12 PM

Guitta, sorry i think you've misunderstood me. I meant while you are in the "Terrain Editor" window, holding down the right button and moving around rotates the terrain. I know that the right button moves the scene and left selects objects within the 4 usual views. Maybe i misread the question asked as I thought Zhann was referring to the terrain editor

MightyPete ( ) posted Wed, 09 April 2003 at 5:26 PM

Holly gees looky that, it does work. I didn't think you could do that. See you can still teach old dogs new tricks. That's the thing with Vue almost anything is possible you just have to try different things. It's powerful you just have to look around the program and the book.

Zhann ( ) posted Wed, 09 April 2003 at 11:52 PM

arry, you got the question right, "while in the terrian editor", I needed to sculpt the back part of a terrian in the "terrian editor", then rotate around to the front to make more changes...thanks for the tip!

Guitta, off topic, how did you get your logo image to link in the forum post? I always wondered about that...:>

Zhann,
I just write (in html) the link to the URL where the image is and the link where it points to. Like this:

<IMG SRC="http://www.guitta.net/icones/guittalogo.GIF"  WIDTH=109  HEIGHT=62  Border=0> :-)Guitta

gebe ( ) posted Thu, 10 April 2003 at 3:42 AM

BTW, the logo is less then 2 KB big, otherwise it would be too long to download.

gebe ( ) posted Thu, 10 April 2003 at 3:43 AM

OK arry, yes I misunderstoud.
