As you'll see from attached image....if I create a cube, drag out the origin handle, set for 8 multi-reps @ 40* Y, all is well. Ditto if I swivel the cube 45*, drag out the origin handle, and multi-rep same number etc. BUT......I've flattened a pyramid on the Z axis, rotated it on the Z axis, now I'm trying to multi-rep it same as above, but it just won't work - it finishes up bunched up around the origin handle. Any advice?

draculaz ( ) posted Mon, 30 August 2004 at 1:02 PM

why would you need origin handles and parenting for a simple replication around the same axis? just multireplicate it without that. drac

pogmahone ( ) posted Mon, 30 August 2004 at 3:39 PM

hmmnnnnn....if you don't pull out the origin handle, how do you specify the point that the copies are to revolve around? Is that not what the origin handle is for? I didn't use any parenting.

Ornlu ( ) posted Mon, 30 August 2004 at 4:31 PM

Yeah, how would you do that drac? Anyway, did you try the semi manual method? I can't imagine why that wouldn't work.

pogmahone ( ) posted Tue, 31 August 2004 at 1:06 AM

Ornlu - yeah, I can get it to work if I duplicate one at a time, and rotate on the Y axis the set amount of degrees. but it's a pain in the arse when the multi-rep is there. I've found the same problem with trees, once you scale or distort then you can't multi-rep. It looks like it might be a 'feature' rather than a 'bug' - it's doing something based on the original position and orientation of the object. If you've scaled as well it seems to continue the scaling operation even if you haven't asked it to........ The solution is probably to make the object in Wings rather than from Bryce primitives. Be nice to know why it's happening though, and find a workaround.

Pog: I did what you described and used the multrep settings shown here. Was this more like you were expecting it to look?

I'm lost as to what the problem is but I thought I'd mention something that I've noticed, may or may not be relevant. When you change the size in any direction you need to go back to attributes and reset it to 100% before multireplicating, unless you want the object to continue to get smaller with each new one. ok back to the regularly sceduled program. Was just looking over your problem again. I think its something in the attributes box thats going wrong. Tjohn has probably got it right.

Ang - yeah, that's what I find as well re the changing of size. tjohn - here's a screenshot of what happens when I create a pyramid, flatten it on the Z axis, move it out on the Z axis to the rim, then multireplicate as shown :o((

Well this is definately a mystery to me, I can't see what you may be doing differently from tjohn. :(

The green dot (the origin handle) in my screen shot is pulled away from the object, and becomes the center pivot. In your screen shot, the green dot is still embedded in the object, and the replications are just pivoting on their own center. I'm not sure what line you're pulling out from the object, but it doesn't appear to have a green dot on the end.

tjohn - no, what you're looking at in my screenshot is....the furthest-out object is my original, with its origin handle showing in the centre of the picture. That's the one I multireplicated. The rest of the objects are what happens when I multireplicate. That's what I'm complaining about!!!!! If I haven't done anything to the primitive it multireplicates properly, but if I've transformed it in any way by scaling or rotating I have problems.

hmmnnnnn.....looking at your image more closely, tjohn, I can see that you're not doing the same thing as I describe. you've moved the object out on the X axis, and pulled the origin handle along the X axis of the object. The size of the object wasn't messed with along the X axis, but along the Z axis. Doing it your way works OK (see attached image) but not doing it if you pull the origin handle across the axis that's been transformed. I'm not explaining it very well, but I can sort of see what's happening now, just wish it wasn't happening.

Aldaron ( ) posted Wed, 01 September 2004 at 8:58 PM

pogahome I see the problem. Look in your screenshot, the z axis size is set to 28%. Change it to 100% and it should work.

pogmahone ( ) posted Thu, 02 September 2004 at 2:00 AM

DUH!! Those figures didn't even register with me, every time I glanced at them I thought they were showing the size of the object. Now that you've pointed it out it's obvious that it's issuing an instruction. DUH!!!!!!!! Thanks a million, that's been really bugging me.
