Subject: Anyone getting P6 out of memory with Bumps maps

byAnton ( ) posted Sat, 23 April 2005 at 11:24 AM · edited Fri, 27 December 2024 at 7:43 PM

Hi there, In P6, when I use bump(jpg) on all my materials I am getting out of memory lock. Max map size is set to mid 3000's Anyone else having this problem. I have a gig of ram and a Radeon 7200. Anton

In my opinion its not the texture size that causes memory problems.
I do 3 things to save memory for large scenes.

  1. Reduce max bucket size from 64 to 16 (P5 Standard is 32)
  2. Turn off Texture filtering (its a memory killer)
  3. Minimize the Poser screen if you render, that saves huge memory. (OpenGL eats a lot memory)
Open the task manager to see the difference of memory use does render.

I get it in both P5/P6. I reduce the size of all my maps and it makes a big difference. Bump maps are a killer. I try not to have to use them, many good textures don't need them even in close-ups.

How about Displacement Maps? I always get the out of Memory Message once I activate Displacement Mapping! :(

The settings for bump maps are a little different for P5 than P6. I've noticed that the bump values for P6 need to be a lot lower otherwise your render will not only stall, but you probably won't get a good effect either. Also, it helps to increase the texture size as sometimes there will be a strain if you are trying to render larger textures at a smaller value.
