Subject: Poser 5.0 for FREE? Or phishing scam?

MyCleverName ( ) posted Wed, 23 August 2006 at 4:44 AM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 7:28 PM

Has anyone heard of any official offers/promotions regarding a FREE Poser 5? DAZ3D has released a free version of Bryce 5.0, and in the process of legally downloading it from Download.com, I happened to notice a 'sponsored ad' mentioning "Free Curious Labs Poser 5 Offer Expires Today!" with a link to www.getitfree.net. Now, i've already owned every Poser since version 3, but I was curious. I followed the link which took me to everyfreegift.com, which required an email address before allowing me to continue. I provided a nonsense address, and the next page announces "CONGRATULATIONS! Where should we send your Curious Labs Poser 5" followed by textfields for name, birth date, address, phone. This seems to be an OBVIOUS PHISHING SCAM, but i've been wrong before. I figured I would bring it before all of you before alerting anyone. And who should be notified if this is a scam?

It has the earmarks of a spammer email harvesting set-up.  It's doubtful they'll actually send you anything functional.  If they do,  it'd probably attempt to install spyware.

MyCleverName ( ) posted Wed, 23 August 2006 at 5:20 AM

I sent a heads-up over to the folks at e frontier. They probably know how to handle it.

That geitfree thing is a spam thing. You have to fill out a bunch of forms and usually never get what was promised. Every time you fill out the required form, they then say thete is "one more" required form before you get the free item, thyen after that there is anothe rand another, itseems there is an endless succession of these, and if you don't do ALL of them, you get nothing, and they get whatever personal info you gave them,  Most people give up before they get to the last form (if there evn IS a last one).

sounds like those product giveaways i see at malls, fairs, and such.

sure you get a "free" product but they get your info and sell it to advertisers.... get a bigger mail box.

uh..sorry, this is legit. You have to go to Daz to get the serial number, and it really, really works. Honest, I downloaded it (now I have 2 copies..;), installed it, and  it works.

The 'spam' part is that Daz will be offering a Bryce 6 upgrade by 12/31 (hopefully sooner), and those who have this version will be able to get the upgrade price, instead of the full price. And it's not a fully functional (nothing drastic, it's just missing materials, and you can download the materials pack from Daz as part of the registration process. Skies and more materials you can get on dozens of places on the net.) Once you get all the pieces in place, it works just like Corel's offering.

Sometimes it is too good to be true, and sometimes it's all good..;)

The Bryce 5 freebie is legit ... the Poser 5 freebie isn't, Pakled.  I own the Corel Bryce 5 and bought the DAZ Bryce 5 for my partner.  I upgraded my Bryce to the DAZ Bryce 5.5 and will be getting the upgrade price to Bryce 6 when it comes out but I know e-Frontier isn't giving away Poser 5.

Getting Poser 5 for free may well be legit, but if you follow through all the pages you
end up at a page where you have to buy some service to get Poser 5 for free.
None of which I was interested in.  And if you don't sign up to buy one of these
services that's all the further you get.  So I just exited out.  That's the free part,
they give you a version of Poser no longer in production that probably doesn't
cost that much anymore, but the money comes from the services they are
trying to sell.  It's like the car dealers giving away a free DVD player.
If you buy one of their cars.

Oh well, I did get Bryce 5.0 for free, but it appears to be the same thing as the
one I bought several years ago as Corel Bryce 5.0.

I totally forgot about the SN!! Where at Daz do you get the serial number for the Bryce 5.0 they offered?

I think he was referring to the Bryce 5.0 and not Poser 5.

I seriously doubt that e-frontier if giving away Poser 5. I  could maybe see them giving away Poser 4 or earlier, but not Poser 5 as many still are using that version and it's not that old considering they are only at version 6.

Yes, but the subject was Poser 5 for free, a phishing scam.
No, it's not E-Frontier giving it away, it's EveryFreeGift.com
that will supposedly give it to you when you sign up for
one of the services they are brokering
As far as the serial number, when you first start up Bryce 5.0
it should give you a link to DAZ with your serial number.
Copy and paste that onto your Bryce 5.0

When you unzip it and run it, there will be a dialogue box about registering it. Click on "continue" and a web page will open up which has your serial number. It also automatically registers it. Copy and paste that into the serial number thing, then that's it. well, then you'll get a link to download the presets andstuff.

Not at first, because you don't buy it thru their store. You download it from download.com, butn once you register it, the serial is in your purchase history

Poser 5 and 6 are so similar, it would make no sense to give away P5.

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Wed, 23 August 2006 at 5:17 PM

I already have P5, hence I don't wanna download it, but it's unclear from this thread whether the P5 freebie is legit.

pakled ( ) posted Wed, 23 August 2006 at 8:18 PM

Jeeze Louise..sorry, let me check..I'm confused..did I mention Poser?..;) I apologize if I gave that impression, but all I was saying is..yes..Bryce 5 is free right now. Aside from a copy of Poser 3 I saw on one of the Brit mags year ago or so, I have never seen free Poser anywhere.

ah..I see it now..;) Ok..it does mention Poser in the 1st thread. I was getting the impression everyone thought the Bryce offer was spam as well..

Unless they were trying to sell you something and using the lure of giving you a free
copy of Poser 5 to get you to sign up to buy life insurance or something like that.

I'll rephrase: It would make no sense for e-frontier to give away P5.

R_Hatch ( ) posted Fri, 25 August 2006 at 1:35 AM

The idiots who create/sponsor/whatever those stupid ads haven't got a clue what the hell they're supposedly giving away half the time (if ever). They obviously use search engine results to target the phrasing to a certain degree, but some of the stuff they come up with is almost humorous. Take for example, the following nugget of ignorant shilling:
**
Grand Theft Auto Cheats**
Quality Pre-Reviewed Resources For
Grand Theft Auto Cheats

Found at a GTA fansite! Where, you guessed it, all the cheats for all of the GTA games are already very easily found on-site. And this one isn't near as stupid as the other one that was beside it last night, which was an offer to give the best rate on a GTA demo! Wow, I only pay rock-bottom prices for video game demos!

If there is one truth that you can rely on, it is this: people are retards.

contentparadise.com is where I've been trying to download it. I got the headsup from cgchannel.com, or cgsociety.org, one of those. I thought that if a site that recognized in the industry had the ad, then it was most likely legit. Content paradise said it was a limited time offer, and was being extended, although sorry to say if it is legit it's too late to get it now (it's 19.99 now :P). For the first couple days the site was really slow and kept saying their bandwidth was reached, try back later. I finally got to download something a day or so later, but it only downloaded a 6 meg installer of some sort.

Nevermind, it's not legit. I just tried the link from my email invoice, and got 404 error >: They actually stated because of the high downloading, the free poser would be available permanently in your account. Well, at least they didn't get any important information from me. I didn't run the 6 meg download they gave me, obviously not Poser 5 (I might try it on a machine I don't care about just for kicks).

I looked for the link cgchannel, or cgsociety had for the free Poser 5 but couldn't find it. What a surprise! I have to say that if this wasn't legit, then cgchannel or cgsociety - whichever it was - really blundered thinking it was legit!

I'll spend a little more time researching it, but I'm sure it isn't legit.

nruddock ( ) posted Sun, 10 September 2006 at 3:12 PM

ContentParadise did have P5 for free up until Sep. 8th.
If you went through the checkout process before then, you have all the time in the world to download (it should be much easier now as they finally managed to get some more bandwitdh online) as the links on your "MyStuff" page will still be there.
Should you run out of download attempts, just contact the support people for a reset.

Fazzel ( ) posted Sun, 10 September 2006 at 3:18 PM

This is an old thread.  Check the date it was posted.  There was aother company that was
supposedly giving away Poser 5 when it was posted.  E-Frontier was giving Poser 5
later on from when this thread started.

Acadia ( ) posted Sun, 10 September 2006 at 3:39 PM

The free offer at content paradise is over, but you can still get Poser 5 at a reduced price of $19.99 USD plus you get a $10.00 coupon.  It's still a bargain.

Just an update: I logged into the contentparadise site, then checked My Stuff, and the links there worked for downloading the setup and content files. I haven't run them yet, too busy.
