Subject: IK off by default - possible?

cspear ( ) posted Tue, 26 September 2006 at 6:29 AM · edited Wed, 20 November 2024 at 6:06 AM

No doubt this has been asked before, but I can't find anything in the forums:

is there any script, utility or simple thing I can do to prevent Poser from turning IK on for the legs? I hardly ever use it, and it such a pain having to turn it off each time I load up a character.

Thanks for your time...

If the internal names of the IK chains are called "RightLeg", or "LeftLeg", they will be set ON by default. To negate this use a different name.

Appears not to be case sensitive. Best to avoid using those names for the internal name also if you want IK's to be off when the figure loads.

A pose file could change the external name but not the internal, so you are down to using a text editor or asking me very nicely to produce a Python script that could do a batch edit. :)

plllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze Phil, pretty, pretty, pretty pleeeese! lol.  IK is an absolute PITA - I never use it and it would be nice if we could turn it on only when needed/wanted.

grovel, grovel

What I did with my figures is bring it in to the scene on it's own, turn off IK and save it back to my library as my own figure, eg. "V3 noIK" or "M3 noIK" etc.

When I want to use dynamic cloth I just load that V3 or M3 instead of the one with IK, simple!

It's still the same figure [V3 SAE], but with IK turnd off!

Not sure I follow you there. If I save a character with IK turned off, Poser still turns it ON next time you load it... unless it has CR2 hair (not HR2) or has some other CR2 bits attached, such as clothes.

I suppose a not-very-efficient workaround would be to save figures wearing basic underwear and delete it on those rare occasions (ahem!) when it's not needed.

But Phil, yes, pretty please....

Well I have to disagree, because that is what I have done and it doesn't come back on!

Maybe try it and see if it works for you.  [:-)]

I also just save the character's .cr2 with IK turned off and I have never either had it load up
with the IK on.  Nor with anything saved as a .pz3.

Weird. That's exactly what mine doesn't do (Poser 6, SR3, WinXP). I've just tried it and it still loads up with IK on

same here so i just use the python script in WW from Phil C

thefixer ( ) posted Tue, 26 September 2006 at 11:43 AM

That is weird, I have all my "people" saved like that, the original V3 SAE for example with IK on and then I have my saved one with no IK on.

I also have P6, SR3 and XP home, must be one of those strange quirks that it seems to have! [lol].

Q:- What does one do when all one's Python scripts (and there are currently a number) are out being beta tested?

A:- One takes requests :)

Please note that Poser 6 already comes with a search and replace Python script. However that one does not have a GUI. You'll need to edit the file in a text editor every time you use it.

This one will batch edit a directory. Search for a line or part of a line. Then replace it with a new line. I strongly suggest you move files to be edited to a temporary directory to avoid accidentally messing up the original. Also avoid sub directories, you may get an error.

This really is at your own risk. I've included many "OK -- Cancel" options so that you can cancel out if you go wrong half way through. But I'm not going to be responsible for someone corrupting their entire Poser library.

Available free by email.

If it helps, great. If not then it kept me amused :)

OK I have to eat a HUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGEEEEE slice of humble pie here! I just checked again and I was wrong, the IK does indeed come back on so apologies for the misinformation!

PhilC's python script gave me an idea.

There's a free application (Replace in Files) at http://www.emurasoft.com/ which does search / replace operations on whatever you point it at. It will make backups of the original file, too.

Note that there are FIVE spaces between  'inkyChain' and the rest of the line (e.g. 'LeftLeg'). So I replaced 'LeftLeg' with 'Left-Leg' and similarly for the RightLeg.

At first I was disappointed that the figure still came in with IK on, but I must have saved it that way originally. When I turned IK off, saved the character, and then put it into a new scene, hey presto! It loaded with IK OFF!

This little app could also be used for changing texture references and many other things, of course. Note, it doesn't work with .crz or other compressed files.

Needless to say, you should be cautious with this technique. The potential for really screwing things up is significant. But it works!

A follow-up to my previous post after an evening spent testing this technique. Two points to make:

  1. Exercise caution, and always work on copies of your original CR2 files until you're confident of what you're doing.

  2. It works.

The 'Replace in File' utility is a pretty neat freebie. It remembers the Find / Replace parameters to enter, and the folder paths. If / when it finds a match for replacement, it makes a backup of the original (same filename plus a .bak extension). If a backup already exists, it doesn't create another. It gives rudimentary feedback on what it's found and replaced, and tells you when it's finished.

CR2 files amended this way load up with IK off, but only if that was the setting when they were originally  saved - otherwise, turn IK off and resave the CR2. If you want IK on, you just turn it on, and it works as it should.

I couldn't find any problems with conforming clothing, hair, poses, parented props, or, in fact, anything behaving as it shouldn't. I don't use cloth or hair simulations so I can't verify that there are no problems with these.

I've converted all my custom CR2s using this method, and put the backups onto CD - just in case.

Hopefully E-Frontier will at least make this IK thing an option in General Preferences in the next version of Poser to save all this messing about.
