Not sure where to put this one, but since I'm using a couple of Max's mats, I thought I'd dump it in here. The primitives are real, the rest is HDRI image. For this to work you'd probably need to use a larger resolution for the hdri.

I have not tried this but MAYBE you set your model with reflection and put this mat, on a surface, near but out of camera sight and let your model reflet the mat.... sounds like the only way to do it....

This render with HDR turned off and took 40 seconds on my little laptop.
Well worth the extra 34 and a third minutes, in my opinion :)
