Subject: Managing stress in using poser too much

TheOwl ( ) posted Wed, 10 September 2008 at 2:58 PM · edited Fri, 26 July 2024 at 12:57 AM

I am getting annoyed with my constant feeling of sleepiness or tiredness when I am working on poser making it hard to focus and slows down my production. There are times I need to blink when my eyes are getting watery.

I sleep early like 11-12 at night or earlier and wake up 7 am. I don't drink coffee. I eat alot of grains and healthy food.
What's missing? Do i need some exercise or something? How do you cope up with this?

I'd say you probably need a break, or at least something else to do away from the computer....exercise can help with energy levels also, so maybe like a short little walk around the block to get the blood moving or something along those lines.

Your eyes may also just need a break from staring at the computer screen for long periods of time. I spend pretty much all day in front of the computer here at work (how I ended up a database monkey I'll never know....) and I know that is draining. I make myself take a brief break every couple hours (it should be more often probably) to get up and away from my desk and monitor for just a few minutes. Let my eyes look at something else, or even just sit with my eyes closed to rest them.

It's gotten to the point where I get home, and have no desire to work on any of my Poser projects or other computer related fun just cause I'm so tired of sitting and staring at a screen....so things take me even longer now to get finished up.

Ditto Reamling.

Also, a dark room helps a lot.  I used to keep the regular lights
on, and found that my eyes like it better when the computer screen is just
about the only available light.  This is especially true if you wear glasses ...
the reflections from the rest of the room hitting the back of the lenses
will distract and add glare, even if you aren't aware of them.

When I feel especially sleepy on one task, it often means I really don't like
this particular task, and I'm sort of hiding the dislike from myself.

I can only go to a certain point without other lighting on in the room....usually at night or if it's really overcast outside I'll have to have my lights on at home, or I find myself leaning in closer to the screen and squinting more, regardless of if I have my glasses on or my contacts in. Then I start wondering why my neck and shoulders hurt.....and then I realize "Idiot, turn some lights on". lol

Here at work, I don't have any outside windows....so the lights are on all the time. But it's not as bad with the flat screen monitors I have now. Old CRT ones, and early flat screens would drive my eyes buggy, but am doing good with the newer ones...and no glare anymore. =)

Yeah.  If  you're into something, it should energize you. In Modo, there are times I work over 12 hours and have trouble sleeping afterwards because my mind is still racing.

I have an idea maybe reducing the brightness of the monitor could help. I'll try it now and see what happens.

Sounds to me like you need to get your eyes examined.  What you describe sounds like an eye related issue.

Eyes do change. Your prescription may not be right for you anymore.
Seriously. Make an appointment with your eye doctor to get your eyes examined.

And you definately should take off that gas mask when working at computers. 😉
Sorry.

For me when I work with poser and or Vue I start the machine on its render and then get up and go do something else like laundry or start the dishwasher, clean, something active, until the render is completed. This way it gives my eyes and body a break. Like you I am in bed by 11 and up by 5 but working in front of the computer makes a lot of people fatigued you just need to break up the time in front of the screen.

I useta wonder why some folks would post vids or renders that were mostly black, back in
the old days.  then I found out they're sitting in darkened rooms, hence the images
look o.k. on their monitors.  the deal with sitting in the dark all the time is that it has
bad fx on the human mind.  one of 'em is called "seasonal affective disorder".

As a test, I tried turning on the lights while I work and noticed that my eyes began to sting and water.

I guess we can be productive and depressed or happy with sore eyes.

A low-level soft light behind the monitor, bouncing off the walls (as opposed to you bouncing off the walls) really helps.  And really, really, really make an effort to get away from the monitor every hour or so.  Get a good book or a dog.  It's just too easy to get tunnel vision and to spend an excessive amount of time at this.

Come on people didn't your parents ever tell you not to watch the TV in the dark??? LOL!!! I agree a soft light in the room helps.
