Subject: Wings3D help requested: Making a proxy for dynamic hair simulation

I want to make a low-poly 'proxy' model, just the .obj, to fit over V4's head and neck. Collision would be checked "on" for this proxy, checked off for the actual head and neck.

Then, when dynamic hair sim calculates with collision on, the sim engine only has to calculate, say, 200 faces, not 14,000.

This is good enough for a medium or long shot.

Obviously the proxy is turned invisible before render.

I exported as .obj the head and neck of my "dialed up" V4.

I ran Wings3D and imported. You can see the two 'groups" are not welded, even though I said to do that in my Poser export.

I think my next move is to combine/weld/merge the neck and head, then to "decimate" (is that the right term?) the model from 14,750 faces down to a few hundred.

I could not find the command to "weld" nor "decimate".

Would any Wings people be willing and able to help me?

I'd publish the model as a freebie, but it is a "purpose built" face and shaped head, so not strictly applicable to general v4 hair simulation proxy usage. So I'll post a thread demonstrating the concept once I get it going.

i'm using wings version 99.5,

if i were to combine these two groups i would select the hole material

top of the neck and bottom of her head

and use the "bridge" command for 'faces'.

  • for bridge to work, each face has to have the same number of verts

thank you for responding.

i am in 1.4.1

I could not find "bridge" but I did find "weld." Chosing "all" and applying weld resulted in the error message "WELD could not be resolved."

MistyLaraCarrara ( ) posted Thu, 05 January 2012 at 2:45 PM

the Bridge command should be on the Faces right-click menu.

i'm lost in wings after they hid the hole material, decided it was better to stick with one version and learn it as best i could.

FYI - Same number of vertices NOT required for Wings 1.4 to create a "Bridge."

@ Misty 😄

Making a "Hole" is as easy as 1, 2, 3 in Wings 1.4.

Please see my tutorial "Wings 101" and the page shown here (excerpt from the tut).

Lara, there is no hole material in 1.4.1...lol. Good thing too - that would just confuse the hell outta me :P

what kinda new stuff did they add to uv mapping?

There's no Hole Material but there is "Hole", which is exactly what it says, a hole. :)

I don't use Wings UVMapping, I think it's bloody awful.

@ OG, you can easily weld verts in UVMapper Pro, also.

Everything? .......... Nah ... just a few minor tweaks (pun intended)

Works just about the same ... check it out.  I think you'll like it.

how would you connect 2 verts over the area that used to be a hole material?

Not having wings fired up, but my guess would be bridge the faces, then go in and change to hole.

1.4 is different, but not that different.  Being able to change selection modes from the menu is handy, as is the, not sure what they call it, but picking mode just by putting the cursor over a face, vertex or edge and have it go into the mode you want.

I like Wings.

The "I" in Doric is Silent.

DId you do a tut on the UV mapping, Geep?  It's always looked pretty powerful to me, but I could never follow a video tut and get anything out of it.

but.....................Decimate?

that is the main thing I need to learn how to do. How do I turn a 14,000 face model into 200 faces for my purpose?

LaurieA ( ) posted Thu, 05 January 2012 at 4:41 PM

Wings doesn't do decimate. Unless I'm really stupid and blind :P.

Please refer to the graphic above (excerpt from Wings 101) ... and then ...

  1. Fill in the "Hole"

  2. Select the vertices to be connected

  3. "Connect ("C") the vertices.

Thanks Laurie, i looked into every menu, and there is no searchable manual and i couldn't find anything on decimate, and wondered too if I were going blind!.

No problem, Wings is still very fine!

Now to find the solution. Here is my starting point...

http://www.shapeways.com/tutorials/polygon_reduction_with_meshlab

If anyone else actually knows a way to decimate in Wings, please post!

Hi John If you have any version of DAZ studio From 2.3 or higher ,installed you can skip wings3D entirely and just export your Low res  V4 head from Daz studio using the "LOD" settings of 1 or 2 K Just open the scene tab in DS and uncheck visibility for everything except the head & neck I just tried it and here is my uber low res V4 head in poser6 ready to run a hair sim. Might be worth a try for you

Hi Wolf!

Thanks for responding.

Can i import a 14,000 face .obj inte DStudio, then export with a 1k setting? or does the process you described actually require the Daz LOD model to start with? I ask because crazy as it sounds, I want the proxy to match my dialed-up v4 character as much as possible.

WOW!

from 15,000 faces to 307 faces in an instant.

This is a beautiful resource.

Well you will  need to export an actual V4 Figure from DS to use the LOD function
not an imported.obj file.
I am not sure about retaining the face morphs as I literally have no morph++ packages for V4
As I only use Default characters for my types of animation /simulation projects.
perhaps someone else could chime in.

OG, DAZ were offering different res versions of V4 for free a while back.  Don't know if they still do but if you don't already have 'em it may be worth looking on their site.

Looks like you found a solution but they could be useful to have around anyhow.
