Subject: Converting CR2 boots from Roxie to Cookie - How?

seachnasaigh ( ) posted Thu, 06 November 2014 at 4:21 AM · edited Fri, 03 January 2025 at 7:18 PM

I've gotten requests for rollerskate boots (and pixie slippers) to fit other dolls.  I tried XD4, and it produced new CR2s, but they are unacceptable.  Maybe I'm doing something wrong, or maybe it is a misuse of the utility.

Is there a fit conversion utility out there which works for shoes/boots?

Most of the time shoes don't convert very well from one figure to the next. Sometimes they might, but that's really a case-by-case basis and depends on how complex the model is. Pretty much shoes and boots are one of those things that are going to require being custom fit and re-rigged by hand 8 to 9 times out of 10.

PhilC has Shoe Converter, although the compatibility list doesn't include Poser 2014 so you should ask Phil about that.

I also should mention that it didn't work very well for the project I wanted it for, but as Phil says it isn't a one-click solution. For roller boots, I'd be inclined to detach the mechanical bits and convert just the boots, then re-attach the wheels after suitable scaling and so on.

You can do it all right in Poser.

Off the top of my head.

Load the character that you want to convert them to. Turn off ik, select the body, open the joint editor and zero the skeleton. Close joint editor.

Load the boots, do not conform them.

Pose, scale the boots so they are in the right spot and fit the character. Don't worry about poke thru yet, just the general fitting of the foot and shin..

Go to the fitting room

Start a new fitting session

Select the boots as what you want to fit, uncheck zero.

Select the target as the character you want to fit them to. Check zero

Click create character. (don't run any fitting)

Select hip to feet bones, toes are optional

Turn of transfer morphs, turn on autogroup and zero

After Poser finishes fitting them go back to the pose room

Open the hierarchy editor.

Drag the bottom of the skates and then the pom pom from the Roxie boots to the new boots foot on both feet.

Delete the character and the Roxie boots (Not the new ones)

Save the new boots.

reload the character you are fitting them to.

Conform the skates to the character and create any morphs that might be needed.

Resave the boots under a new name and recheck them.

Your done!

edit:  Cross-posted with shvrdavid.  I considered the fitting room, Scott, but I fear it would play havoc with the eyelets/laces.  I can get around that, but I was hoping for an automated conversion so that I do refit to several dolls.  If I have to use the fitting room and then fix the eyelets/laces, I would only be willing to do a few dolls.

file_38b3eff8baf56627478ec76a704e9b52.PN     Thanks, gents.  Yeah, shoes seem to be a special case, for some reason.  RedPhantom pointed out the WW2 feature;  from an initial test using PPro2014's built-in Wardrobe Wizard 2, which has a couple of shoe/boot specific options, it appears to convert well, with the understandable exception of the big lacing bow.  I'll just modify the converted OBJ to fix that.  I ordered some doll support licenses from Phil Cooke as well as the Shoe Converter;  I'll try it in PPro2014.

The skates and toe poms are already separate from the boot.  For use with the Ghostbuster jumpsuit (working on conforming fits for several dolls), I'll replace the fat & fluffy laces with either buckles or a zipper, and substitute a thicker lug sole.

I'll try to make a Genesis rollerskate boot, Ghostbuster jumper, and pixie dress/panty/slipper, but I don't have Genesis, so someone else would have to test the product.

For Rex (and other guys), I'll just omit the toe poms and re-texture the boot black and the wheels red.

The goal is to support some Poser native dolls, plus some independents, and some popular DAZ dolls.  Roxie, Ginger2 & Minnie2,  Posette, Jessi, Alyson2, Cookie & Chip, Gumdrop, Aiko 3 & Hiro 3, Anastasia, Antonia, Michelle, Dawn, V4/M4, and I'll try Genesis.  I don't seem to have any means to convert for SuzyQ2/Dude2...Hmmmm.

I have already converted them to a few characters. If you do not run a fitting it wont mess with the geometry at all.

Clarify, please - did you use a converter or the fitting room?  And what doll is that? By the way, it occurs to me that I could save myself some grief by making the bow/knot portion of the lacing a smart prop, so that it isn't part of the figure OBJ.

Fitting Room only. That character is a massive mod to V3.

Do you want me to do a V4 one for you?

So then do you mean that I should fit the boots, but avoid fitting the bows?

Oh, I'll begin trying to run auto-conversions soon, including for V4.  I'll yell if I have problems, so thanks for offering.  Right now, I'm looking at the Rex conversion geometry.  I think this will go quicker (on a large scale series of conversions) if I separate the lacing bow.

You don't run fit at all in the fitting room. You get them to fit in the Pose Room. You only use the Fitting Room to insert the skeleton and spawn a new obj. Then use the Hierarchy Editor to add the skate part to that.

Give me a bit and I will put something together for you that will explain it a lot better.

OK, Scott, I'll certainly check this thread whenever I'm on.

Oh, the auto-conversion to Rex looks good, including the bow.  Pretty sure Rex will won't show his face wearing these until I dump the pink & white color scheme and the toe poms, though.  :P lol.gif~original

Another reason for me to separate the knot/bow will be for animation;  The knot would be constrained, and the bow would be dynamic. : )

Ooof!  Now that I have loaded the Rex conversion OBJ into Silo to fix the big toe poke-through, I see that the shape is jittered/distorted, as are the UVs, and the eyelets and lacing is a bit of a wreck in places.

While I won't mind using it myself, I'd be ashamed to post that as a content item.  Shane is right about shoes needing to be built individually.

What did you build them in in the first place? You could just use those and export the dolls in question and go from there in a modelling program.

I have converted things both in Poser, and in other modelling apps. You still have to rig them in Poser afterwards, but that is not to hard to do once you have the first one done.

They were modeled in Silo.  I think I'll try going back to an early state of build, when the boot was low poly and start from that.  I zeroed Rex out and exported him and now have his feet and lower legs in the Silo scene.

It might be worthwhile for me to look at a few other auto-conversions (I ran conversions for Alyson2 and Cookie), and see if they survived relatively intact.  Fine details like the eyelets and lacing really show it if there is much distortion.

They way I do it in Poser rarely ever distorts the wire frames. Sometimes the winding order will be a tad odd but the UVs remain intact even when that changes.

There is slight shift in this conversion, but not enough to worry about.

I would assume that you have them saved before you grouped them for Poser. That would be where I would start the conversion to other characters if you go that route.

Oh, that looks plenty good enough.  I'm gonna have to give your method a shot.

Yeah, each time I complete a significant step, I duplicate the model, then continue development on the dup.  That way, I can revert back to an earlier stage if I need to.

I've mostly been working on hardware today.  I paid $900 for a refurb workstation with dual X5660 Xeons and an FX3800 Quadro  Has a Win7Pro license.  I bought six 8GB RAM sticks (max the mobo/chipset will read) and it's nearly ready to power up.  This will replace the core i7 machine (which died on me) as my number two workstation.
