Subject: What Needs to be fixed in the forum?

bagginsbill ( ) posted Wed, 01 April 2015 at 11:50 AM

Ugh - but when I use the full-screen option, the Post button is gone!

I have to un-full screen first before I can post. That's awkward, too.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

AmbientShade ( ) posted Wed, 01 April 2015 at 12:08 PM

I'd forgotten there was a full screen button - lol. I never use it. But yes, that's an option too.

Thank you ... we are discovering a lot here ... sometimes more than we even expected.  Even as a coordinator, alas I would like to add, that these discoveries ... the "fixes" should be made available to all.  Perhaps once things are done we can make a little tute on our site.  As mentioned some of these things seem hidden, not obvious.  Just a thought. Carry on.

This also might seem odd, but I'd like to add things I actually like about the site changes.  I like that we CAN add photos directly in the text frame ... and videos.  Some sites make that a two screen process.  Some only let you add one image per post.  This I would say is a vast improvement.

Both Hivewire, and RDNA sites have "Advanced" screens and "Post quick reply" screens. Maybe something like that might be a better option, particularly for someone like BagginsBill.

  1. Multiple Quotes in a reply. (Multi-quote capability) Either a UI Button in the Reply options to format an embedded quote or "multiquote" option buttons beside each post, so they can be toggled to be added to the reply when it's created.

  2. Variable size composition window for replies. (A little window drag-sizer icon at the lower-right corner of the window.)

  3. Non-volatile memory for the reply window. I just had to retype this because I clicked on the "Full Page" option and back-paged to return to this window and it dumped everything I had written. :)

  4. Would automatically interpreted hotlinks be too much to ask? (ie: Pasted raw links) Or, is the forum going to be blocking all html commands?

  5. Please take the Forum Monster out back, behind the office, and shoot it in the head - It likes to eat my posts... :)

  6. Auto-refreshing after Reply, so I can see my reply in the thread so I don't have to actually click on the thread's link in order to force a refresh.

  7. A "Do Art More Better" button beside each post, so I can re-render the posted render in order to make it look more betterer... ;)

  8. A "Thank You, You're Awesome" button that appears besides any BagginsBill post, so I can click it, lots. (Seriously.)

piersyf ( ) posted Wed, 01 April 2015 at 5:45 PM

I'm just going to list one like and one dislike, things that bug me...

  1. I can browse and load multiple images to a post, not just one image per post like previous. That is an improvement.

  2. The search function is still broken IMHO. If it isn't 'broken' please post the protocols for effective operation, because they aren't what I would think are logical. As an example, post 'pearl shader' and see what you get. To actually find anything where pearl is mentioned at the top of the search returns, you have to go into advanced mode and incrementally increase the range. I found it by extending the range to cover 1 day to 1500 days (excessive maybe, but 700 days didn't cut it). What is so hard about searching sequentially? 'pearl' then filter returns by 'shader'...or 'shader' first, then filter to posts that also include 'pearl'.

Gremalkyn ( ) posted Wed, 01 April 2015 at 11:57 PM

Enough, please, with the vanishing scroll bar.

My main problem may be caused by a recent update of my security program, but I will mention it anyway:  I am more and more surprised when ANY Rendo page opens correctly, but especially Forum pages, as I usually get "Page not responding" notices which sometimes close the page (refresh will not reopen) or even kick me from the internet.  I had also thought the update was making this place run slower, but that seems to be an actual issue for others as well, so I am not sure just how much of the PNR notices are ads being blocked and how much are speed issues where the page is, in fact, not responding.

  1. Do not automatically subscribe to threads in which you have created a reply. (If this is a toggled feature, I don't know how to untoggle it. :) )

For Hivewire, click your username in the upper right > Settings > Notifications tab. You might want to untick the 2 options under the Discussions heading in that tab. Those will subscribe you to topics you start regardless of what the subscribe button on the topic says.

Just found out the site has problems with non-ASCII characters. I posted a gallery image with a new gold lamé shader. The e with acute didn't survive passing through the editor on its way into the gallery.

It might have had something to do with previewing the post first, which I did.

Seems OK in the forum though.

moriador ( ) posted Fri, 03 April 2015 at 3:13 PM

I don't recall seeing this one mentioned, but it bugs the hell out of me:

After quoting someone, the first keyboard return is ignored and treated like a line no-space line break, which leaves no space between paragraphs, even though, in the text editor box, it clearly shows a new paragraph. Putting in an extra return to avoid this, however, doesn't work, as the first actually shows up then and you get a really big space.

Not a bug but... the huge difference in font size between quotes and posted text is silly and extremely unfriendly to people with vision problems who use larger fonts. In fact, the relationships between the sizes of various elements (icons vs text, banners vs text, etc, etc) is completely out of whack. The entire site needs to be tested for ACCESSIBILITY, otherwise it's seriously discriminating against the vision/hearing/mobility impaired. And while that's totally legal, it's superbly bad customer service.

Quotes should show the username of the person quoted.

Boni,

Would it be too much to ask that who ever needs to fix this forum, make a post acknowleging that they have indeed read this thread? Frankly, considering how long  we've been complaining, I don't think it's too much to ask for a sign of good faith from Renderosity that something indeed will be done to fix the problems we've listed.

..

The quoted text being larger than the actual post has annoyed me from day one. I was sure it was just a temporary glitch, but months later it remains unchanged, so obviously somebody thinks IT SOMEHOW MAKES SENSE TO HAVE THE QUOTED TEXT SHOUTING EVEN THOUGH ITS PURPOSE IS ONLY TO GIVE CONTEXT TO THE POST WHICH FOLLOWSand the posted text itself is somewhat lost on the page, even though it is the entire point of the forum, it's what we come here to read,

and then you think this is a continuation of my post, but it's difficult to understand how it relates to my post until you realise that it isn't actually part of the post, it's my signature, a pretentious quote or something which is confusing the first time you read it, and every time after that it's just plain fucking annoying and you have to turn everyone's signatures off to make it go away.

--

Make the quoted text LESS visually dominant (LESS, not more) than the post which follows, it's purpose is secondary to the post.

Give the name of the person being quoted. As well as being polite, it is helpful.

Draw some sort of line after the posted text and before the signature so the eye doesn't just run uninterrupted into the signature in every post in every thread. Make the signature text LESS dominant than the post text. Signatures serve a purpose (supplementary links and background info) but they are useless if they are so annoying that they have to be turned off.

Really, why is this basic stuff so difficult? Even with all the great precedent, a million examples of forums which work really well out there, why did Rendo have to ignore all that and start from scratch inventing one which fails on almost every level? Welcome to the new improved Rendo forums, really awkward to read and really hard to post in. Money well spent, I'd say.

I wholeheartedly agree.  Along with it being polite, it would also cut down on attributing things quoted by one person  from being thought to have come from another person. Especially if you have the person being quoted on ignore.
I might also suggest having quotes within quote marks and italizied.

(Notice that I manually changed the font of the quote to italics and placed a horizontal line after it. I tried to reduce the font size, but there's no option for that.)

This puzzles me as well. Not only are there millions of examples of forums to use as guides, there are any number of third party bulletin boards that you can just drop in to your site. vBulletin is one that has been around for years.

I am still keeping an eye on this topic and if any results are coming.  It's been four days as of this post and so far my request  that someone who will be working on the forum at least acknowlege that they have at least read the thread of forum greivances seems to have been ignored. If they can't (or won't) even grant a simple request like that, I have little hope that anything else will change. But since it is only four days so far, I'm still willing to give the benefit of the doubt.

A "me too" and I'd like to add I had to manually look for the recent reply since I do not get emails about replies but for a few rare examples, and only for about a day on any given thread - then nothing forever more.

At the very least, the cynic in me would appreciate something like "I looked at the email code and I can't see what's wrong - perhaps you could help, Ted." Because I could help. I get paid to write software (which happens to work - what a shock)
