Subject: Do freebie makers need/want some seamless tiles?

moriador ( ) posted Sun, 19 April 2015 at 1:47 AM · edited Sat, 28 December 2024 at 2:46 AM

In the midst of all the forum troubles, I'll try to offer something positive... :D :D

I've been playing with Filter Forge, learning how to make filters, etc. (It uses a node based system, so it looks quite familiar in many respects). The kaleidoscope node makes for some truly addictive processing. So in the process, I've generated thousands of seamless texture tiles, mostly for fabric, upholstery, wallpaper, floor tiles, that sort of stuff. Range is from the mundane to cute to wild to utterly outlandish (Timothy Leary meets Rorschach). I actually might want to attempt to sell some of them if people like them, but I have way too many to put together into packages.

I know a lot of merchant resources, even freebie ones, don't let you use them to texture freebie models, so I wonder if this would be useful? I can also generate pretty basic stuff like denim, plaid, linen, etc, if there's a need for it.

I understand that the freebie section is rather bungled at present, and I was going to suggest that I (and anyone else who wants to play) just post them in the forums. But then I remembered that the forum does some weird stuff with compression. I guess there's always ShareCG.

What do you think? Do you guys want them? (Most are 1024 or 2048px, so the pattern size range is pretty big).

Those look beautiful.  Of course, any seamless, well-made textures would truly be welcome.

These are very nice. I really like the second, green, tile pattern. I would be interested in your textures.

I don't need it for anything, but I like that second one, looks very retro-70's!
And cool to see more people using Filter Forge!

Hello moriador, thanks a lot for the work so far.
And all look very well made.

But question :
Why not stick with the default square surface?
Most 3D apps work best with square textures at 512x512 up to and often including 8192x8192
For tiled textures?
I would opt for 512x512, 1024x1024.

Even 2048x2048 is on the big side tor tiled textures.
Just a thought.

Cool! Thanks! I'll get a bunch together and get them online.

(The middle one is my fav of those three, too. :) I've got a bunch that are similar.)

Vilters, I probably wasn't clear (as usual) -- the tiles are mostly 1024 x 1024 and 2048 x 2048. I do agree that 2048 is BIG, especially for fabric, but I rendered some of them that size so that I could get close details. Some of the crazy patterns are very, very intricate, so one might want to use a single tile at U/V size 1.000 (though most are best on fabric at about 0.1, depending on whether you want a big, bold print or a little one). And if you're using it for wallpaper, well, some walls are quite large. Also better to be too big than too small. Easy to reduce a texture size; not so easy to increase it. But I may just upload everything at 1024 x 1024, in the interest of saving people's bandwidth. :)

Pumy, I've got some pretty wicked looking textures that Roxie might like. Blood red. :D (I call the set "Vampire Castle" but it could just as easily be "Roxie Red".)

I'll post a link soon as they're up. :)

Sounds good, Moriador, and just as well really cause Roxie is in a really bad mood just lately, she even pulled her avatar!

What a lovely gesture.  Thank you so very much.  Many people can use these. :)

Thank you for offering - I make some of my own textures with Gliftex and Genetica, but it is always refreshing to work with something different. Very nice work.

They sure look good and will go perfectly on designs with Marvelous Designer's flat UV mapping.

I have quite a number of clothing items for Roxie and Antonia I would be happy to share, but then as you say many vendors do not allow redistribution unless worked, and yet the whole point of models with flat UV's and seamless textures is that they are made to be used without working them: simply cut the patterns from the tiled surface.

Thank you for offering.
