Subject: Question about video cardds and Poser 11

Letterworks ( ) posted Mon, 22 February 2016 at 12:56 PM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 11:14 PM

Hi, I'm looking for a bit of advice and/or the answer to a question.

I am going to buy a new computer with very appealing specs except for one thing, it uses the integrated Intel HD Graphics 350 for graphics. I intend to buy a good Nvidia card at some point in the future but buy the computer will about break my budget for the moment. So, I'm looking for any advice as to performance with Poser Pro 11. Is it going to be a serious issue or just a minor set back not having the Nvidia Cuda?

Thanks for any help

For what it's worth, my iMac has a very modest nVidia graphics card (GT 650M) which does support GPU rending in Poser 11, but I don't even use it - CPU rendering is faster for me. Of course it depends on what you need to do, but for a 'hobbyist' like me it's fine.

Poser Preview rendering uses OpenGL, which should be well supported by the integrated Intel graphics.

I don't have PP 11 yet but would expect that GPU rendering would require a very expensive video card otherwise would be a waste of time and money. When I upgrade I'll stick to CPU rendering myself.

If you have about $400 to $500 to spare you can upgrade to a decent nVidia Video Card and Power Supply A GTX970 with 4GB is about $350, this is a mid end card with 1600 cudas, Unless you have a decent Powersupply you ,may need to fork out another $150 for a platinum 80 certified, 850W power supply

The performance is significant. That configuration is nowhere near pro. My dream rig is $3500 (two Titan Xs with 12 Gb each) which should be about 3 times faster than my current rig

I don't render in Superfly yet, but I've been rendering in Octane. I've tried Reality and Iray with CPU render option switch on... It was no way near the speed of GPU renders.

You can't really compare apple with oranges. If you have a lower end nVidia card with only a few hundred CUDAs it will not give you the speed you expected. The GTX970 has 1600 cudas. the Titan X 3300 cudas. I have two older GTX760's they each have 1100 cudas so combined 2200 cudas.

As with CPU,rendering if you have an older single or dual threads CPU with lower speed it won't give you fast results. You probably have to invest in a ,multi threads / multi core CPU to get the result similar to a Mid end Video Card. Or you could build a renderfarm with multiple computers. Of course, there is a matter of cost.

So, no mater how you slice it...whether GPU or CPU rendering, If you want speed, you gotta pay.

You can get a lot of info off the web by googling blenders cycles. Just double check super fly rules. I never caught if Poser 11 can use both CPU or GPU.

If you can build your own PC's or If you have a PC shop or know some local PC savvy dudes. They might be able to build you a killer PC cheaper.

Real time render engines are very affordable.

I just picked up a 4GB nVidia GTX 960 card for $200, and it made a huge difference in Superfly (I had a Radeon card before, which didn't contribute to Superfly, obviously). I have a 500W power supply on an AMD Phenom II X6 system, it seems adequately powered (the card draws 128 watts), although if I make my bucket size bigger than 128, the render sometimes fails, but it may be lack of memory ; 4GB isn't a lot for a big scene. The biggest scene I've rendered thus far contained 2 fully clothed Genesis 2 figures in a furnished room.

I can't Link to it 😡 , but it's an EVGA GeForce GTX 960 04G-P4-1962-KR 4GB SC GAMING with the stable Drivers from the nVidia site.. I got it at NewEgg...

PS; I should add that nicely accommodates my analog secondary monitor... 😄

No doubt. You have to take stock of what you are doing with the computer. I play keyboards and use my computer as the center of my recording setup. I would rather spend money on the CPU than the video card. If all you are doing is 3D art then the mondo video card makes more sense in that situation.

My computer has integrated graphics and an nVidia card. I found poser 10 virtually unusable in hardwire preview mode using integrated graphics due to really strange material effects. I've just checked P11 and the problem seems to have been overcome, but I've only checked a figure in the default P11 scene, so I'd be a bit concerned about relying on integrated graphics

Thanks for the replies folks. I'mean really rethinking this... Mostly I play with Zbrush, Silo and Poser... I've also been trying to learn Daz Studio, so I'm planning on a better Nvidia card. Maybe I'll lower the ram and get a better card first, let need to look at things...

Were you using Open GL or Sree3D mode?

open gl. I could use Sree3D which overcame the strange banding in textures but produced overly vivid colours. It might be driver problems with the integrated graphics, but as I could use the NVidia card I never investigated further.

Hi there

For GTX 970 I would say 650W PSU is enough and 550W will be OK,those GPU doesn't eat too much power like Titan Z or Titan X,I'm running Titan X with GTX780,both are Overclocked plus I'm running older Xeon X5670 which is OC to 4.2GHz and my PSU is 850W,Titan X usually eats around 250W when renders and GTX780 eats around the same as Titan X 250W

GTX970 is great card, but have slower 0.5GB VRAM which can affect render speeds, just have look over on Blender forums and regarding Titan X there,if you are really want to render only with Superlfy,I wouldn't get Titan X,its great card with lots of VRAM,but 980Ti is slightly slower than Titan X in Superlfy and my old GTX780 still have reasonable render times, slightly slower than Titan X,as I pointed in one thread over on RDNA I think Superfly is not optimized for new Maxwell cards and due this I would go with older GTX780 6GB which cost lot less than Titan X and same has been with Octane when Octane performed poorly with Maxwell cards(Titan X,GTX980 etc),but at least Otoy optimized the renderer for new cards...

If you are using for rendering GPU then I would invest, but still I would bit wait until new Pascal and Polaris will be out and plus Octane 3 will have in future OpenCL and then you can go route of the AMD card

If you render with Octane then I would probably go with Titan X,but still if its worth hard to say, price is still too high for Titan X

Hope this helps

Thanks,Jura

Hi there

I'm surprised its crashing on yours when you render,if its possible can you post yours render settings there ?

And do you have enabled Branched Path Tracing,if yes please disable this, this can make render to crash and if you have enabled Subdiv(I usually set Subdivision at 1 with Genesis) plus maps etc this can take lots of VRAM,i would export Genesis as OBJ and export them again to Poser and if you missing SSS then you can apply on them too SSS via EZSkin there too

Hope this helps

Thanks,Jura

If you run multiple app's I swear one wants RAM the other bigger GPU the others quad CPUs. My PC quad 64 bit .you can upgraded from time to time more RAM ,bigger GPU. etc etc. Got 8 RAM ,GeForce GT 620. Witch was all just fine till I got Substance Live. GeForce GT 620 works but not the best choice for Substance Live. So guess I alt to get a bigger GPU.

and the mother board n monitor is from 2013 so I know I'll need to replace them soon also. PC's last me about 3 years ,if I'm lucky ;)

Hi there

You are not alone there with HW preview mode who have issues,I've tried too like my R9 290 or R9 390X or even Titan X or GTX780 with all of them I've run to issues,in new PP11 I've now issue with OpenGL again same as with AMD when AMD abandon atiogl.xml like in this thread

http://forum.runtimedna.com/showthread.php?97726-Poser-Pro-2014-problems-again

Now this does happen with Titan X too sometimes, its not frequent, but does happen too

SreeD is CPU only and OpenGL is hybrid CPU/GPU,this preview renderer is only preview and usually I don't care how it looks,I do real fast quick render and check if lights are correct etc and I would rather to recommend to use Raytrace preview which will give you idea how yours scene will looks when you will be rendering etc

Hope this helps

Thanks,Jura

Hi Jura,

I haven't had any issues when I set the Superfly Render settings in the render settings dialogue instead of the included Render Firefly script (yes, I know It's Superfly, but the script allows one to chose Superfly as the renderer, so it has obviously been updated for P11), which apparently needs fixed. Thanx! 😄
